One of the problems of using ply is its weight. Going up hill on a trike is hard work and the last thing you want is hauling a heavy weight. I started making a trike but soon realised that the weight of all the parts was adding up. I used the Sturmey Archer hubs and built my own wheels using aluminium rims. I saw a cheap Windcheetah on EBay which I bought and updated. Only weighs 16Kg. Be interesting to see what you finish up with.
@JohnR314153 жыл бұрын
My assumption is that the ply is a prototyping material...
@MetalMachineShop3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is quite heavy but I'm just prototyping the design. It would be possible to make a lighter ply design with a bit more thought put into the design itself (stress calcs, etc.) (Sorry, missed this comment).

I'm thinking about implementing a tilting steering system into one of those knee scooters for injuries, and I'm learning a lot from your collection. I'm hoping its not as daunting as you sort of made it seen, but we'll see! thanks

I’ve probably over-complicated it! Any basic design along these lines should work.

This is probably a silly question but why Sturmey hub brakes and not mechanical disc brakes ?
@MetalMachineShop3 жыл бұрын
It’s a good question! There are quite a few reasons why I went for the drum brakes: - less complex, no need to make fiddly calliper mounts - hard to find a handed pair of callipers (I subsequently found that they are available) - easier to find 20in wheels with drum brakes - lower maintenance - slightly more aero Mechanical or hydro discs would probably be a bit lighter and perfectly practical though.

@@MetalMachineShop handed calipers of course , Daw ! 🤔

Have never seen drum brake pushbike wheels before, how much did they cost?
@MetalMachineShop6 ай бұрын
I got them from shop.ginkgo-veloteile.de/en/Wheelbuilding/ . They are commonly used in the velomobile world. They were about 200 quid each iirc.
