Tim Cahill revisits the major influences that shaped the early stages of his playing career, when as a “quiet, polite” teenager he made the step up from youth football in his native Australia to the physical, testing surroundings of the Football League in the late 1990s.
At the time of his arrival at Millwall, he joined an environment in which young players were given opportunities, and therefore went straight into the first team. In this exclusive interview with The Coaches’ Voice, he explains how those experiences created the player who later succeeded with Everton in the Premier League.
A trip to the old Wembley Stadium in 1999 was followed by promotion to Division One two years later, before Cahill scored the goal that sent Millwall into the FA Cup final in 2004. They lost, to Manchester United, but Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy that day taught Cahill what it takes to be a “winner”.
