Tim, perhaps like no one since John Hartford, has distilled the very essence of American Folk Music. Very few musicians come along who are so talented in all aspects of their art: singing, songwriting, musicianship. All of us are so much richer for experiencing the joy of his music. It is contemplative and sagacious, but at the same time exuberant and hopeful. It's a lot like the spirit of America.

Always amazed at how effortlessly Tim O'Brien plays, his hands just wandering over the instrument in a seemingly lazy way, yet the notes are always there. Bela Fleck always impressed me the same way; no wasted motion. These guys will be making music in their '80's!

+Bruce Abbott The really great ones always make it easy, that is because they know their craft that well. He is completely on top of his game, relax and really to have fun. It is always impressive to experience someone that advance. The last worthy note is that he completely hears the music in his head and isn't on the instrument, that is reason for his playing with equal ease all the musical instruments. Then that one number where he had his guitar capo on the wrong fret and changed it.

@@SiggyMe I had the good fortune to see Tim at the "midnight jam" at the Merle Watson Festival in NC. He outplayed everyone there, and even gave Tony Rice some competition. He's a very modest person and it's a pleasure to talk with him.

Not sure I've ever seen a video of him playing anything but mandolin-family instruments, so it was great to see the variety. Very talented guy. I was blown away by him performing "Brother Wind" on Transatlantic Sessions -- promptly went out and got several albums.

It is a Greek instrument called a Bouzouki brought over by the Greeks in the 1900's.
