This video explains the plight of Western Australia's Museum of Film and Television, known as Pictures in Motion.
Over twenty years, the museum has been preserving valued relics from both the cinema and television industries. Everything from 70mm cinema projectors to television cameras which trace the history from the black and white analogue era to the widescreen high definition colour digital era of today.
They have comprehensive examples of film technology, from camera, to editing, to broadcast. Then there's the incredible scope of videotape technology, from the 2 inch wide tape, through the many different formats to modern day storage devices.
Sadly, the government is about to evict the Museum from the Sunset Heritage Precinct, leaving the collection in a dire situation trying to locate alternate accomodation.
Even though there are excellent heritage sites sitting idle, such as the former ABC Radio studios in Adelaide Terrace, and other locations, the Museum has yet to find a benefactor willing to enable this incredible collection to be kept, and not possibly thrown on the tip, which seems to be the last resort.
WA is flushed with billionaires, many of whom have made their fortunes in the mining boom. We can only hope that someone will be kind enough to enable this collection, rich in history and heritage, to survive.
This interview uncovers all the issues and reflects on the wonderful times veterans enjoyed working in the respective entertainment industries.
