When it first came out it received mixed reviews, then later received multiple award nominations, including seven Academy Award nominations, and a theatrical re-release that, combined with international takings, increased the film's box-office gross to $73.3 million.

Shawshank came out the same year I finally got sober. When I saw it, the line " Get busy livin, or get busy dyin", hit me like a freight train. It was a summation of what I had been doing for a couple years with the help of so many people in the fellowship. To this day it is a summation of what is required to escape the behemoth "addiction"! This year, 2024, I will celebrate 30 years of continuous sobriety, and my life has never been better! There is so much in Shawshank that I completely relate to and experience everyday. I watched this gem of a film back in October 1994. Timecop was sold out and my former buddy and I decided to watch 'Shawshank Redemption'. We left the theater in awe. It was inspirational and an amazing film going experience. The eight people in attendance stood up and clapped after the film was over. I bragged about this movie to everyone. I have the original poster videocassette release hanging in my room. Gawd! I love this film.

A cinematic masterpiece. The irony is that back then, I used to go to movie theaters at least twice weekly. Was unaware of this film. Nobody I knew saw it. It wasn't promoted. I didn't hear about it until 10 years later. I watched it on cable TV and was blown away. I've seen it a dozen times since. The friendship between Tim and Morgan's characters was beautiful as was their performances. I hope to view it one day on a big screen. It's a classic! ❤❤

I absolutely loved Forest Gump. It was an epic film to see in the movie theater.. . Pulp Fiction was soo different at the time it blew my mind how disjointed and seamless it was at the same time. I never saw Shawshank in the the theater and it is my biggest movie regret.

Was visiting a friend in San Francisco when this came out. We got tickets and it wasn't till about 15 minutes or so in that I realized this was based on the KIng novella. The audience was stunned, then out of nowhere the clapping started and a standing ovation broke out at the end of the film. Amazing.

No one mentions the antagonist, a 1-derful, versatile actor, Robert (Bob) Gunton, not a household name but a face that is impossible to forget since Shawshank came into our lives.

Funny you mention Gunton. Not only does he act in my favorite movie, but he also has a significant role in seasons 7 and 8 of my favorite TV show, 24. It's also interesting how his 2 roles are so different. In Shawshank, he is easy to hate, but in 24, his character is so opposite. Very likable, and really opposes any kind of corruption.

The ending of the movie makes the whole thing worth it! I love the way the posters in Andy's cell marked the decades.

The book/novella left it much more open and focused on the word "hope" - i.e. hope 'springs' eternal, one of the Four Seasons stories. The movie took the cheap feel-good way out in the last minute.

The book ends with a deep statement on the meaning of hope WITHOUT knowing if that hope is going to be "manifest" specifically in the way that you're hoping. At the end of the movie, HOPE (the whole effing point of the story) is no longer part of the equation. If you can, find the last few lines of the book and meditate on how the movie takes a much cheaper way out to satisfy the "I want a happy ending" masses. I get the feeling if you wrote Game of Thrones Eddard Stark would still be alive, lol.

"The Shawshank Redemption" has now reached the same number of years, that Red spent in Shawshank prison. Didn't think when I saw it back when that it would become such a classic. Although I left the theater thinking: "This is the kind of film, that used to be an American classic."

My husband loved this film. It took him 5 years for a degenerative disease to finally take him in 2023 and I have no idea how many times he watched this film. Many, many times. I have watched it quite a few times myself over the years. It is like To Kill A Mocking Bird or The Lord Of The Rings. You see and contemplate on something new or maybe some little nuance you missed before. It has a way of being timeless and, finally, when principles and right and justice finally triumph, also life affirming. The Shawshank Redemption story is a classic of writing prowess by Stephen King and a classic of film and film making as well.

I saw this movie on my first trip to NZ from U.K. It was shown to the whole plane as ‘the movie’ after everyone’s dinner (no individual back of seat viewing screens back then!!) on the LA to Auckland leg of the journey. Awesome movie experience. I am sure everyone who saw it with me on that flight have found memories remembering their first viewing then. What a captivating story of friendship and an amazingly uplifting ending to a movie.

I think that Street Smart was Morgan’s first Oscar nomination. He was of course very good in that too. I liked his line: “Yeah well it ain’t all basketballs and dishwashers out here.”

As good as it gets. This film could have been made in any era, 1930's, 40's, 50's, etc. and it would have become a classic. Every performance in it is brilliant. There's not a wasted word or moment. The culmination of it, with Morgan Freeman's timeless voice, is a sledgehammer to the heart. Beautiful writing. Pitch perfect direction. This was such a fertile time in American cinema, with so many great films in the 90's, of such variety and quality and great, memorable performances. "Shawshank" is the epitome of that. I think it's the last great era of American cinema.

I saw it in the theater on day one because I had read the story in 1982 and it was on a short list of King pieces that I wanted to adapt to the screen. At the end of the movie I was crying. Because of how great it was and that I knew I could never have made this great of an adaptation myself.

The problem now is that we rarely get a year like 1994 anymore when we have so many great films competing for an Oscar. On the flip side, many independently made movies are so well made and interesting that they sometimes blow big budget films right out of the water!

I tecall watching this in the cinema 30 years ago. Recall everyone stunned into silence at the end, some crying silent tears of joy,(including me.) Then the clapping started. Never seen anything like that before or since. Like a spiritual experience. Closest to that was end of Gladiator. Amazing movie.

This was a short story written by Stephen King. I had read it, but did not know that was the movie I was watching at the theater. I kept thinking, "I knew that was about to happen," over and over, but never realized how I knew until the credits. It is one of my very favorite movies. (And I highly recommend "Different Seasons," the book that includes this story plus three other Stephen King short stories -- THREE of which were made into movies, including "Stand by Me.")

Even though I see the hobbit/lord of the rings trilogies as 1 film instead of 6 films not even those can compare to how great The Shawshank Redemption is. Easily the greatest film ever made. I don't ever remember seeing a preview of Shawshank before it came out. I think marketing hurt the movie. But man the first time I saw it, I was saying to myself. I can't believe I never saw this on the big screen. The narration by Morgan was superb. I have 3 copies of it on DVD. And 2 copies are still in plastic. The only movie I have multiple copies of.

They seem like pretty cool dudes. I got to meet Robbins 5 months ago and got to tell him personally how much of a favorite movie this was for me and how myself and my coworkers would often quote lines from it. He was a down to Earth guy and very soft spoken and he graciously thanked me for the compliment. Very cool for me to be able to tell him personally as most the time we don't get to tell our favorite actors how much we enjoy their work.

This is one of those rare films where every single character was perfectly cast and everyone gave an incredible performance and combined with a timeless story and impeccable direction, the result is the perfect movie. 👍😃👍

Saw it in the cinema when it came out because I've been a long time Stephen King fan and knew he can write great non-horror stories like Stand By Me. Broke my heart because it was such a perfect film and only 7-10 people were watching it.

i just went to st croix and walked the beaches of sandy point. it was very cool to know the last scene was filmed there. it wasn't a normal beach. alot of elevation on the sands, currents, and when stepping into the ocean was neck high. the colors of the ocean were amazing though. if i could post pics i would

I was convinced from jump it wasn't Mexico. Adroitly, the director realized he needed the bluest, translucent water he could find. In part, made that scene. That was heaven.

This is one of Stephen King's movies they got right! I love the book, and love the movie. Though the scene they discussed about the sewer tunnel was not described that way in the book. Stephen King said he wanted Morgan Freeman to be Red if the movie was made. Stephen King said he picked a few new actors in mind to be Andy, but Morgan was always written to be Red.
