G'day Tim. I carry with me a Autophix Universal OBDII scanner (OM126 OBDII+EOBD/CAN Universal Code Reader). Cost me $150. Was up the highcountry a couple months ago and my hilux went into limpmode. Plugged the scanner in and was able to see the fault code and erase the code which enabled me to drive out and not end up on the back of a tow truck. Great live as always mate.

Hi Tim I recently had a similar problem with my 2004 GU Patrol. It just cut out while I was driving along and was difficult for the workshop to diagnose as they were unable to repeat the problem. It had also had recent issues of just cranking and not starting. But it would start up again with no issue when the ignition key was turned off and then on again. Anyway after leaving it with them for several days they were finally able to discover it was an ECU relay which was replaced and since then it has not missed a beat.

The contamination at the filter seems to be at fault not the valve it self , I would suggest a high quality diesel additive like from Cost effective maintenance or fuel doctor that would break down the gunk and prevent this and clean the injectors plus more regular filter changes

Onya, Tim! Glad the fix was an easy snd cheap one. The old Patrol is proving to be bullet-proof. May it keep on chooglin' for many more years. I recently sold my Fortuner for a good price and went back to the past with a 2003 105 Land cruiser, 1HZ with Berrima turbo, only 270k, straight and rust-free. No more common rails or DPFs to worry about, so I am hoping to make a long term tourer/tower/camper of it. If it keeps up with your Patrol in longevity, I will be a happy camper!

Glad you got it sorted out Tim - it is so frustrating when it is hard to work out the problem. I thought as I was listening to you talk that you might have had the same issue as me. My old pathfinder had the exact same issues as in your description about this time last year .... but would come good a number of times often as soon as the RACV came to check it out on the side of the road and nothing was found even after driving to the mechanic where the RACV unit was based. Some thoughts were maybe fuel pump and possibly the distributor but as it kept starting a lot of head shaking was pretty much the only result. After a lot of diagnostics (only 2 faults found and neither related to this issue) and some scary incidences (like once cutting out, but luckily reviving in time, in the middle of a busy roundabout) I stopped driving it and got it towed to my normal mechanic where I used to work over 40km away. A number of things were checked out and finally the dizzy was replaced and has not missed a beat since - I hope that statement doesn't jinx me! 😁

My 2010 Nissan patrol Ute had issues like this shut down randomly as I was driving found out 2 months later it was an ecu issue replaced the ecu mechanic had the car for abit because it was an intermediate problem didn’t always happen was hard to explain to the mechanic so I told him keep the car for a month or to drive it around. Thank god it got fixed though utes have the non nats security system also had an issue with my fuel pressure relief value

Some portable scan tools can read the rail pressure on the fly. I used a Bluetooth one with the torque pro app on phone, little bit of a pain to use but can display alot of data. Again it's a safety the rail has, won't fire injectors. Same thing happens when it looses fuel prime. Carry a spare primer bulb, same symptoms when it drains back from air getting in.

Curious, did you replace with genuine and if so, can you post part no, thankyou. Plan on getting one and carrying in spares bag. I had an issue with a diesel Jackaroo, just began missing out of the blue after refueling, assumed crook fuel, no not the case. Never was resolved, spent a shit load of money replacing sensors etc, Holden run me round with diagnostics attached, oil pressure dropped each time it missed, but hah, the Jackaroo had oil pressure injection, caterpillar concept . Nothing replaced fixed it, new oil pressure pump etc, but it miss was more relevant as oil life deteriorated hence very common oil changes. Change oil, run fine then begin missing , weirdest thing. Eventually it suffered a cracked head between glow plug and injector, so I pulled the head off. The fuel rail ran from the front of the head to the rear at which point there was a bolt with a hollow in it, that was meant to have an extremely fine mesh in it. Wasn't there. Apparently this formed part of fuel rail pressure, anything over pressure returned thru this mechanism to fuel tank. I reassembled the motor without it as I couldn't see it being an issue. Once all reassembled I come across this chap whom says that would be my issue, apparently that tiny gauze filter played a big part in fuel rail pressure, well it never got fixed and to my knowledge the Jackaroo may still miss even today. I sold it once I purchased my GU ZD30 new in 2017. Sold Jackaroo 2018 as I kept using it whilst setting Patrol up. Infernal miss, lose power, cut in and continue to run for ages, then repeat. Weird problem, diesel with intermittent miss. Confused everyone. There's a yarn for yah.

My pa always used it in his old Datsun 2.4L diesel with 600,000ks on it and never broke down besides the rubber in the fuel pump that was worn out, he told me to use it if I ever get a diesel vehicle.
