The concrete jungles of the world's cities are massive sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, due in part to their construction.
But now some architects are reverting back to one of the oldest forms of building material which is cheaper, faster and more sustainable.
Al Jazeera's Nick Clark reports from Zillertal in Austria.

The only issue with wood is that it isn't as lasting when compared to brick housing and requires more up keep.

If you consider that it's less expensive to build like this and buildings have to be rebuilt every 50 years (in japan at the moment they rebuild every 20 years) that's probably not important. Anyway we still have hundreds years old buildings with original wooden structures in europe so there must be a solution to this.

Maurazio yes there is... Continuous care. I'm just saying that there is more work with wooden buildings if you want them to last.

Bricks requires high temperatures to be produced. Localy sourced stone is more suitable. Theoretical age limit of wood is ~65k years, so if you keep it dry wood can last a long time.

Try to get the climate alarmists to admit wood and forestry is green, they don't want any trees cut and yet they want toilet paper.

Don't want any native forests cut, sustainable plantations are fine because they get replanted

Deforestation is a problem where forests are cut to make way for agriculture. Not the case in Europe.

How can Austria afford to log? They'll be out of wood in 20 years. Buy from Canada!

Yea we log, but we have millions of square kms of uninhabited wilderness, unlike Austria.

Its coming from Romania most of the trees. There was a documentary specifically on Austrian businesses in Romania. The situation is complicated. By the way I am Canadian also.

It's a balance, we have to deal with deforestation rates before we can seriously consider timber as primary construction material. Ideally we should be using hemp.

Forests in Europe have greatly increased in the last 50 years.
@tellingfoxtales

@@chris-2496 true, but they've declined massively everywhere else apart from continental Asia so forest stock still needs protecting.

@@tellingfoxtales I agree - local context is important, but having wood as a valuable material instead of fuel encourages planting more trees, since it can be more profitable than agriculture in some areas. Forests in Europe mostly aren't "natural" - they're managed tree plantations with the added benefit of being habitat for wildlife.

matured trees do not have any protection guarantee to our planet, hence for better result you better harvest tree and replacing by planting others
