I head up to deer camp for the second and final weekend of the 2021 hunting season. Since I filled my deer tag a few days prior, I decided to help my nephew get his first deer. Every hunt teaches a lesson or two (sometimes 92 lessons), but they are all valuable and help us better ourselves. Join along as we finish out the general mule deer season here in the Evergreen State.

This happened to me my first time deer hunting. I took the shot, watched the deer drop, twitch, and lie still for awhile. It was very open country and as I walked towards the deer, a solid 10 minutes after the shot, the deer bolted to it's feet and started running like it wasn't injured at all. Thankfully I was able to get a couple more shots off and brought the deer down, but it was NOT pretty and it took me awhile to recover from that experience. It turned out that I clipped the top of the vertebra and, I think, the shockwave of the bullet interrupted the spine temporarily. But when the nerves recovered, the deer was basically back to normal. Thank you for covering this so well rather than just going "oh well" and shooting the next animal. I'd hunt with you anytime!

Love your content you share, this particular moment will me help me with my son here within the next couple of years as i begin his hunting One of the differences from my hunts and those i see of social media is i immediately make a push towards the area of the animal once i know i made a impact shot for instances like these for a second follow up shot or tracking purposes… Hope your nephew picks himself up and continues to learn and broaden his knowledge of hunting

It's happened to a lot of seasoned hunters Samong. I was with my uncle who shot a monster blacktail buck straight on in the neck looking at us at about 30 degrees straight down at 75 yards. The buck went down and we celebrated and went and got his deer. We drug it down the hill 3 hundred yards to the road and linked up with the hunting party. As soon as I grabbed the back legs so my uncle could gut it the buck came awake and began to kick my a$$ by kicking me with his back legs. The 4 of us held the deer down and a pistol shot to the ear finished him. After skinning him we realized my uncle had missed all vitals and the bullet traveled thru the neck and halfway down the backstrap and not a drop of blood or fatal injury. I hope your nephew doesn't give up hunting and continues to practice shooting and hopefully it never happens to him again. Thank you for all the videos Samong. Shout out from North Idaho!!

He had a good rest for the shot sitting or standing. Dont beat yourself up. You did everything right up to that point. Simply celebrated a lil to early with all the excitement of the deer dropping in its tracks and everything else that happened and assuming you had a dead buck. Just a tuff break with him jumping back up and not realizing it because he was behind the trees. Just bad luck in my eyes. It happens sometimes. Id say he died shortly after though and was bleeding internally but who knows for certain. What we learned was to keep on him till he's not moving anymore before celebrating but i think you did everything right. To bad that it had to end up like that with his first time out. Its heartbreaking to not get to take home the first buck you have shot. I know because i lived the same deal with my first buck. Better luck in the future! His time will come im certain of it!

With a bow or a rifle, if they drop like a sack of potatoes I put another one in them. Too often that spinal shock wears off after 1-2 minutes and then you're tracking a wounded animal for 3 days.

1) I absolutely thought that was a dead deer when I watched it real time. 2) at first I was worried about the comments for you nephew’s sake, but obviously your followers get it. These things happen, unfortunately. 3) good on you for trying to find ways you could have improved as a mentor to put him in the best position possible. 4) no doubt that your nephew is also looking at ways he could improve for his next hunt. 5) only question I had/have is whether he’s afraid of the recoil. A .308 is not bad, but he is 10 years old. I wonder if the gun/round selection contributed to shot placement. Would a .243 or 6.5 creedmore been a better choice?

One tip I could probably maybe give would be be have a small picture of just a deer with a little Bullseye put in the killzone and right before you tell him it's illegal deer shoot it show him a picture of the little deer with the cross hair on it and tell him shoot it right here where this is at so he has a perfect visual right before he puts his cross hair on the actual deer

Never stop learning or reviewing the hunt to learn more from, the more you hunt te more you'll learn. lol When you're 94 yrs old, you will be breaking the hunt video down to all your subscribers, talking about what you took away from that experience. Feel your pain. I put my son on his first buck this year opening day. He was shooting with a .223. Yes a little small but that's what I had for him at 12yrs. He make contact with a huge 2x2 which is legal in Ca, broadside at 80yds free hand. The buck did the whole back arch at impact and walked away gingerly out of sight into the brush 10yds. There was a second legal buck still standing there and as we celebrated the same way the other legal buck along with 3 does begin to move away and down hill and seconds later the buck my son shot followed and you could see in his body language he was hurt. We backed off 1hr and came back and found no blood and because they all moved in and over we didn't find any good tracks that we could say for sure was his. We looked for 3hrs going in small circles and no luck. I felt bad for him. Me have the experience of deer hunting every years since the 80s and have harvest dozens and dozens of Ca bucks both with rifle and bow, I know that split second we saw him again I would have fired off one more round and maybe put him down. That's not what I wanted to do. This was not only my son's buck but as business goes I wasn't the hunter. I had filled both my tags already during first full week of Archery with a 3x3 opening day and 4x4 that same week. No eye guards count.

Good effort on the young lad's part. I thought he'd hit the spine with that shot, but I guess it was above it. More practice in various hunting positions to develop muscle memory. Is that his normal rifle? His cheek weld doesn't even look close when first shown. Might be time to find a rifle under the Christmas tree that will be set up just for him. Better get a caliber that can be used on elk, bear, and moose, I don't think he'll be giving up. Can't wait to see him out on your sturgeon fishing adventures.

Number one stop beating yourself up as a mentor You did an absolutely perfect job the shot was missed no big deal it happens as a matter of fact if you wanna know if you did your job properly ask Elliot if he prefers sitting down to shoot or standing up I personally prefer shooting off of sticks instead of sitting down any day of the year I hate sitting and shooting I rather stand and freehand rather than sitting and shooting so number 2 ask him what he would have rather done and if he says stand and shoot stop beating yourself up I too thought that shot was perfect when I 1st saw it I even yelled boom when I saw it
