At close distance, all 3 camera shows similar sharpness. But if you are standing further away, A74 will show sharpest image, A7S3 show softest image. I finally see the advantage of higher megapixels.

I own the a7siii, a7c, and EOS r5. Frankly, for MOST people the a7c is just fine. The tech is fun but like a fast sports car, they dont get used by 99%. Good video.

If I wanted nothing but the focus breathing fix, 10bit video and the incredibly improved control with separate sets of settings for photo and video, I'd get it for that alone. That is 100% usable and enabling - far from being superfluous "sports car" niceties over the A7C. Sony has focused on very essential things. *Best of all* Sony usually carries these essential improvements forward to future cameras. So for compact camera fans, the A7C II will probably bring the improvements they can fit.

No. Ofcourse more features is good to have but it's mostly superfluous and people have made great content with current setups. They are all good. To me, usability is more important than other factors, since I mainly use 4K or 1080 25p. So I opted for the A7 IV, for the usability. But if I didn't have the cash, the A7C could have easily done the work I need.

Nice review. The jump to the a7siii also provides a very noticeable improvement in rolling shutter. I would rate that as more of a reason than the corp restriction on the A7iv.

Agreed but using crop mode improves that a lot. I am not bothered looking at the A7iv as a crop mode video camera. The A7iv offers a pretty decent crop mode for video so maybe that is an OK tradeoff for the price. Then you still have FF for the look and possibly lower noise if you need it.

I only bought the A7SIII because it felt light years ahead of my A7III. I bought it weeks before the A7IV's release date was announced. Not sure I would have immediately grabbed the A7IV given my awful experience with the A7III. My GH5 produced a similar image to the A7SIII so the A7III was extremely disappointing, I wasn't expecting it to be that far behind the A7SIII in terms of video. Really love my A7SIII right now!

I thought the color grade on your studio shots looked slightly green and I'm not a fan of that low saturation look. fwiw Also, one big plus to me of the A7iv is the excellent crop mode performance. I don't see a big problem with using crop mode for video as long as the camera does a good job of downscaling. The lack of 4K in crop mode was a big negative for me on the A7siii. I'm also upgrading from an a6500 and have a number of crop lenses so that was a big influence. Another major sticking point is that the a6500 looks sharper in 4K than all of the FF cameras in FF. Some of them approach its sharpness in crop mode. I finally decided that the a6500 is actually over sharpened somewhat so possibly that is a false advantage. I have not seen anyone address this. Check out DPreviews video stills of the various cameras. I finally sprang for an A7iv based on all of its other advantages over my a6500 but the apparent sharpness difference is still sort of a sore point.

Sharpness is kind of a false prophet in my mind.. most cinema cameras have a softer look than dslrs.. I’m a fan of that. But to each their own. I just find myself softening images more than the opposite. And I’m still working on getting colors dialed where I want them since I’ve swapped over to DaVinci. I think you’ll be pumped on the 4

@@TimConnor13 I think you are probably correct about sharpness. It was just a tough decision since it feels like giving up something. Sony also did a decent job of whatever they did on the a6xxx cameras, and I always wonder if the result of that was the very high rolling shutter. Basically, they went for a very good 4K image down sampled from 6K. So far, I'm thinking that Sony has just gone for a more balanced, accurate, look on the FF cameras. On the other hand, the HD on the a6500 is very soft. I find myself shooting it more like SD. lol Thanks so much for the reply and great video!

I notice some magenta blockiness in the blacks of the a7C footage. The older Sony cameras really struggle with log and the jump to 10-bit is such a huge deal (IMO), if you need it. Cool video, very well shot and explained

I did not see much diffrence, aside from the A7iv have better IBIS overall. For me, I only shoot indoor, and I like the a7iv _ because I would like to have 4.4.2 And the quality was better over all on a7iv. And that make sense since it is down sampled from 7K to 4K. great video, and you have my subs!

If you record, slog three, do the colors look correct on the screen while you are filming? I don’t know what this even is, but it sounds like maybe it’s similar to HDR on iPhone? Or whatever their new mode is where it looks blown out until you edit it in Final Cut and then iPhone makes your Instagram video brighter than everyone else’s. Idk I hate it lol but if it’s a better results and all I have to do is copy and paste some settings, I might be on board

Hello, I had a Sony A7II and connected a dummy battery to a NP-F990 for video recording. My question is: for Sony A7C and Sony A7IV can I only operate the camera with USB type C without a dummy battery? If feasible please provide link to product. I tried it but it doesn't work, the settings on the camera are also set to USB-ON. Thanks so much

Howdy! I enjoyed the video. I haven't read the other comments yet but I am seeing a fluttering/glitch around the edges of your hat and face at times with all the cameras you tested. What is that? Do you see it? Hopefully I don't have a cheap TV. I'm watching on a 4k Toshiba. I have the a7c and I have noticed this digital looking fluttering/ in my videos as well. Also, I prefer to use a modified standard profile or modified neutral profile. The S-Log profiles look washed out even after color correction to me. Putting an extreme LUT on S-log videos seems to lose the advantages. Anyway, thanks for the video. I'll keep watching.

Ive had both, for me the sony ended up being better for video work with features like clear image zoom, in camera proxies and better / cheaper lens options, no recording limit, better autofocus, full frame bokeh... The fuji does have nicer colors tho and 4k 60 so both are great. I dont think ill go back to APSC anytime soon.

what would you reccomend for tripod shooting and extreme hot anf cold environments? I'll mostly be filming on a boat, it'll be pretty calm wave wise. but there will be days it will be hot and most of the time on a tripod. then there will be the days ill be filming in the woods in the summer and winter again on a tripod most of the time. And budget is an issue.

The difference will be hard to see. The additional features are what will make the bigger difference. Like 4k120 & uncropped 4k60 or the external raw recording to an Atomos recorder to get more latitude out of the footage or match w/ other cameras. Other than that, there are no major differences. Now depending on your use case, those two things can be huge or small.

Also, in theory the A7IV will be sharper because it’s downsampling from 7K to 4K. Images on the A7IV will also be better when blown up due to more megapixels. A7SIII will also perform better in low light in theory since the pixels are larger on the sensor. The one big difference you’d see is in rolling shutter, where the A7SIII eats the A7IV’s lunch haha

If you haven't yet, would be nice to see a video about working with S Log. Currently getting started with including a camera with my videos. I am going to be trying the Sony ZV-E10 with an option of the Panasonic GH5, though I believe the autofocus on the GH5 makes it less desirable for my use case. Mostly will be using the camera to record talking head shots and my face while going through a demo/tutorial that I am recording on my PC. If I can get something solid going YT wise, then it'll be time to upgrade to a full frame camera. I need to check out some Canon stuff at some point, just to be sure, but the Sony stuff I've seen seems like it'll be tough to beat. Will likely be a bit before I'm ready to upgrade though.

And the A7C has that old magenta problem because of its A7III sensor. But manageable in post.

All of them look great to me. If I didn't have a side by side there's no way I could tell which is which. I like the specs of A7IV over A7C. I don't think I'd use any of the extra I'd get with the A7SIII enough (if at all) to justify the extra money. I'd rather get a better lens than jump from A7IV to A7SIII. If A7IV had uncropped 4k60 I wouldn't even consider another camera. Still A7IV wins for me.

I think you've made a small mistake, the A7C isn't that it has less dynamic range, it just has more capacity to capture light and you didn't know how to lower it so that a good image can be seen. I have seen several images that you took and they look burnt. Regards

I think the 74 is a tiny bit sharper, the dynamic range of the 74 was about the same as the S3. Of the features that mean the most to me personally the slightly better sharpness of the downsampled 7k and the price are tempting, BUT the 4K 120 of the S3 looks sooo good.

Camcorders generally are a better value for video only users.. mirrorless cameras are better for hybrid shooters and tend to allow more upside for creating cinematic & beautiful images

Hi Tim, great video. You filmed it in winter, but I live in Spain and it is a very hot place. So, there's a big difference between A7Siii and A7IV: overheating. I really would use more the Sony A7IV specs: Super 35 crop mode and focus breathing compensation, I think both are more useful for me than 4K 120fps and no crop at 4k 60fps. But the real problem here is overheating. In Spain, everyone who has purchased the Sony A7IV, has returned it due to overheating problems. Many experienced overheating after 10 mins without using high bitrates neither framerates. I am currently using a A7C, without overheating issues. My only option is going to a A7Siii or FX3. I miss a Sony camera with 24MP (in order to have Super 35 crop mode and less overheating issues) and 10 bits 4:2:2. This 10-bit 24MP camera would be "the perfect camera" to me. Probably the next A7C Mark II? Cheers!

noted.. and great points.. the FX3 overheats too.. badly.. I've actually experienced both the FX3 and a7iv overheating now.. a7iv definitely better than fx3 but I'm really struggling with even keeping the FX3 because it's overheated with very little use (at higher bitrates)

I’m really impressed with the A7iv. I use a A7Riv for fotos and as a B-cam and a A7Siii as my A-camera but I’ve been considering a 3rd camera as a dedicated camera for my desk and as a B-cam when I KNOW I won’t be taking important photos. Your video has definitely helped me completely eliminate the A7C as a possibility; and REALLY has me considering the A7iv, IF I do get another camera. I had been considering an additional A7Siii or an FX3 but I don’t need a 2nd camera for 120fps and the A7iv would give me a a good and very versatile option over my A7Riv unless I KNEW I wanted some top quality stills on the same day. I really appreciated your video - it did help. So, you gained a sub. One thing… I wish you’d bump up that saturation a bit. Personally, I like a more vibrant viewing experience. But, it’s none of my business. Just thought I’d share anyway. ✌️

For the a7c.. I like slog2 S.Gamut.3.cine.. For the A7iv and a7siii I like slog3 (same gamut).. you’ll get the most dynamic range and color flexibility!

To shoot a movie or advertising 120fps @4K is an important thing to have. Slow motion is a great tool to emphasize certain moments or switch the audience's brain wave pattern. Your Test didn't really show off its low light capability, which does easily top the A74. For everything else and photos, I'd pick the A74. The one with the most advanced mechanical controls. The A7SIII is a hard sell, because its ahead of A74 in some things, and behind in others. Its not clearly better overall and you give up important advances of the A74. Annoying! A7C lacks the better video profiles and resolution. Some people buy it cause its easier on gimbals. depends on the operator, I guess. I just use Steadicam anyway...

I currently have the FX3 and shoot product videos 4k 120 is super nice. Otherwise I don't use 120fps a ton. Weddings I shoot in 4k 60 so either the A7iv or FX3 would work. I currently use my A7c as a bcam for video and photography camera. Usually when I shoot with 2 cameras I am usually doing something like an interview so 4k 24 is perfect. Still considering getting the A7iv just for the 3rd dial and better ergonomics 😅

The A7C is back. It was a temporary stopped due to chip shortages. Sony recently announced its return.
