I think I figured out the ending, folks. Dmitri couldn’t kill the younger narrator since the older narrator wouldn’t exist to be brought back to the past as a result, thus creating a true paradox, and as the topic title states, time abhors paradoxes, so it simply erased Dmitri from existence instead. Man, that’s a scary way to go, but at least in this instance, the bastard deserved it at least.

Which is nonsense, because change is something that happens within time (I.E. at one time Dmitri exists, and at another time he doesn't). You can't change time itself.
@physics_hacker
@physics_hacker 5 жыл бұрын
The conservation of mass and energy would mean that he couldn't have been erased from existence, but there's already something that could be erased: the time machine itself. Or, the concept of it. The materials used aren't a problem but the concept that Dmitri brought back to his younger self has no origin. The older Dmitri got the concept when he was a kid from his older self, who got it as a kid...and so goes the loop. There is no origin point of the concept, so it can easily be erased from having ever existed in the first place thus fixing the paradox. Which means Dmitri is still out there doing his thing, he just never got involved with time travel, at least in this manner.

So, since Dimitri couldn't have taken him back in time if he was already dead, "time" got rid of him to prevent a paradox. That is why nobody remembered him when he "moved". The narrator did, because he still had to go back to make the situation that caused the paradox. Once complete, that was erased too.

That still doesn't explain how the narrator got back to the present day since Dimitri was erased from existence and the narrator didn't have the knowledge to operate the time machine. Did "time" just place the narrator back in the present? Or did it just put his consciousness back in the present when Dimitri was erased?

Really enjoyed this story. The protagonist's friend was obviously a sociopath, since he had no empathy or concern for his friend---and neither did his "younger" versions. I was glad that this story did not take the obvious path of killing the protagonist, but instead of the timeline "fixing" itself, destroying the one who had been causing the damage (who totally deserved it) and restoring the innocent to his normal life and timeline. Excellent story, very interesting, well told.

I see. The ending was him tricking Dimitri into creating a paradox. He used a simple question, "How are you going to kill me?", and Dimitri created a paradox by overthinking it. He should know how his friend will die since it happened in the past, but it didn't happen yet, but it will happen and then he'll know, but he should know since it happened in the past. This thought train creates a paradox and in order to avoid creating one the universe kills Dimitri so that the paradox will not be challenged.
@QueenNeptune
@QueenNeptune 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with this but I dislike this ending though. It feels like it betrays what we know about Dimitri. The genius guy that's not forgetful didn't question the fact that this memory was "missing" from everything else that day. You would think he would be at least a little bit worried after noticing this but we didn't see that in the story. I could just nitpicking but it seems like the author foregone the logic of the story a bit.

@DaChoc0cat
@DaChoc0cat 5 жыл бұрын
*Deleted on accident but again* You would be able to go back in time because that's the "past". Every second that goes by in the present becomes the "past". So you could go backwards in time then "back" to the time or second you left which would still be the "past" or "present" but not the future. Which would be a second or more after you left UNLESS time passes while you're gone so you could return to ahead of the time you left since it happened already but not for more than the time you've been gone. Not being able to go to the "future" is probably because it would mean going to a time that hasn't happened yet which would immediately cause a paradox. You probably guessed it but I enjoy thinking about stuff dealing with time and paradoxes.

@Rekora says "our protagonist killed Dimitri in self defense. " I think that makes the most sense. 1) after that summer Dimetri suddenly "moved". Did he move or is that just something he chose to believe. Trauma does things to memories. 2) no one seemed to remember Dimitri except him. The Mandela effect. 3) no one at the door at the end. The knock was an echo from the previous timeline. 4) I suspect towards the end (in the past) the narrator asked how he would be killed. It is very possible that he remembered having to defend himself. (Possibly a repressed memory coming to the surface) 5) no trace of Dimitri online. "He was a ghost" Time was trying to correct itself but the narrator never knew, ( at least not consciously) On a side note: I suspect forced time travel may have been the cause of Dimitris mothers sickness.

huh at first when older Dmitri died, i thought that perhaps young Dmitri had attacked the young narrator, but the young narrator fought back and accidentally killed young Dmitri instead, thus killing older Dmitri. That would also explain the sudden move after the summer, because if young narrator was seriously traumatized by being attacked by his friend like that, he could have subconsciously blocked that out (ptsd/ptss type thing). And since he was so young, he might have drawn the conclusion that Dmitri moved away. That could also explain why narrator couldn't find anything on him after he passed. the information of the attack could have never went public, and the families and police kept it quiet, so he couldn't find any articles on it, ect

Do you mean the one with a time traveller giving a book Einstein wrote to Einstein back in time before Einstein wrote it and than it repeats itself and the time traveller gives the book back to Einstein.The question of this paradox is who wrote the ideas Einstein or the time traveller who gave the book Einstein originally wrote?

The universe erasing Dmitri from existence to prevent a paradox kind of reminds me of convergence points from Steins;Gate. Though, the difference is that if a person changes the past to change the outcome of something, and that something is a convergence point, the universe would somehow find a way to make that something have the same outcome as if it wasn't affected by the time travel at all. So like, if you went to the past to prevent someone's death, and that person's death is a convergence point, the universe will change some stuff so that he will still die but just in another way.

I love that they mentioned space along with time but even with keeping the same space as the machine, how does that help when you travel time and both you and the machine would presumably be in the wrong place due to the planet's orbit and the rotation of our galaxy (which happens at 40k mph, so you would end up time traveling to deep space if you went much further than a handful of minutes)
@Spuggky45
@Spuggky45 3 жыл бұрын
Traveling through time, assuming it were possible, would be a terrible idea. It would most likely kill you. The first problem is spatial orientation. The earth, the milky way Galaxy, everything is constantly moving. If you traveled back in time to say, the year 1500 for example, the earth is most likely not in the same position it was in when you left. One of two things is likely to happen. A) you would find yourself inside of a tree or a mountain or something (resulting in your instant death) or more likely B) you could pop up in space, resulting in a slower, more painful death. The second problem is displacement. Let's say you could go back in time to exactly the spot and moment you want to go. Again, lets say an empty field in the year 1500 AD. The problem is that the field ISNT empty. It has air in it, air that you have now displaced. That air has to GO somewhere. According to Google, an average adult male takes up about three square feet of space. Because you just materialized into this field in 1500, that three square feet of air is now going to be violently shoved out of the way, slamming into more air, which is now violently displaced. You would likely cause a huge explosion, leveling everything for who knows how far, and because you are in the center of this huge explosion, you will likely be vaporized.
@NotSoSerious69420
@NotSoSerious69420 3 ай бұрын
I mean except the only problem here is in order to travel back in time you’d have to move through space since the motion of particles is the fundamental causality of time. If you’re going back in time you’re going back in space to the time in which both your time and space are identical.

There’s a few issues with this one, firstly it’s stated in the story that the time machine does not allow for forward time travel, so how did Dimitri ever return to his own time when he was doing all the earlier experiments? Also Dimitri would know he can’t make his younger self kill his friend because if he had done that, then his friend would’ve never been there in the first place, therefore he shouldn’t be there now. If he could’ve been killed in the past then he wouldn’t be alive currently.

first point is a good one, it’s possible he lied but i have no clue what purpose that would serve. as for the second one, it’s mentioned that dimitri often overlooked obvious details that the narrator would pick up on, ultimately leading to his defeat. i guess you can call it foreshadowing.

no. like Old Demetri explained to the protagonist when he saw young Demetri for the first time, seeing something shocking or unexpected in a time that you have experienced can literally cause your head to explode. So, when the protagonist pointed out to Demetri that he couldnt have killed him, that confused the hell out of him, and Demitri became shocked when he realized there was no way that younger him could have killed the protagonist... in conclusion... PEW!

Depending on the time travel method we are talking about and the logistics behind it it is still possible to return to their own time. If we follow standard rules of time travel laws then we would have to say it's logically impossible. However if we follow the laws of time travel used in endgame which in all honesty seems like the most logical the future would be the past for the main character ergo he could still return if this was the case.

The paradox woulda been easy to solve if old Dimitri killed Old Narrator, the Narrator's younger self would probably continue existing just like the 2007 dog did. This is because the death of old Narrator would be in the future now and would have no effect on past/younger Narrator, it also woulda been interesting if the story added younger Narrator finding his own deadbody but not recognizing it.

I have some questions about the ending: 1.) Some have mentioned that the thought process of the paradox is what creates the paradox, and is what caused Dimitri to be erased by time. Why? Wouldn't the paradox already have -- and always had -- existed, despite one human's brain going through its chemical functions to be deemed (by who/what?) as the 'proper' thought process? Even if it was, why Dimitri and not the narrator? The narrator also had no memory of being killed, because he wasn't, so wouldn't the explanation and thought process by Dimitri cause time to "erase" the narrator then and there, just as Dimitri did in the actual story? 2.) How is that erasure? Dimitri's head exploding? How is that the way time erases a paradox and erasing Dimitri? My initial understanding is that this was the effect and symptom of the 'time sickness' when the brain can't comprehend this unnatural occurance they're experiencing, and the head exploding was the extreme result of such an extreme time experience such as a paradox. What is time sickness anyway? How does it work? Why does it work like that? 3.) The time machine... where does it go? If they're in it, 'nailed to the ground because time and space are one', then wouldn't that mean it's still there, but the machine functions differently than universal time's functions? Why? What makes the atoms that make up the molecules that make up the materials of the machine special/distinct? How is it distincted? Wouldn't the simple existence of the machine's existence in space and two-way motion in time be a paradox itself? Like placing the machine in that field; wouldn't it already be there? Wouldn't it already exist twice until each direction of time collides? What point would that be? How do the laws of physics abide by the entity going reverse with time, if time and energy are two basic laws of the universe? For example if you shot it with a rocket launcher. Or just simply the wind. Or hey, everything else, such as the dirt, animals, people (wouldn't the people cutting down the trees encounter it, either going back or already there?), and trees. Like that tree that was right in front of them once they reached 07. What if a tree grew under them, or... through them? 4.) What made the narrator go back home like that?
