On the subject of the illusory nature of time from the perspective of absolute spacetime: Albert Einstein stated that "since there exists in the four dimensional structure (space-time) no longer any sections which represent "now" objectively, the concepts of happening and becoming are indeed not completely suspended but yet complicated. It appears therefore more natural to think of physical reality as a four dimensional existence, instead of, as hitherto, the evolution of a three dimensional existence." Einstein went on to state that there is not a true division between past and future, but rather a single existence. In other words, the distinction between past, present and future is an illusion. Since all subjective time is relative depending on the observer's speed through space relative to another observer and their relative position in the universe, there is no objective, absolute time or absolute space as Newton proposed. Instead, since there is no objective "now" due to the relative, subjective observation of space-time, the only thing that is real is the whole of space-time. As theoretical physicist David Bohm stated: "Ultimately, all moments are really one. Therefore now is eternity" Or as theoretical physicist Brian Greene says: "Just as we envision all of space as really being out there, as really existing, we should also envision all of time as really being out there, as really existing too."

Lori Shaw I know what you mean Lori and feel similar so let’s look at it for a moment (in the spirit of Rupert...;-). I really don’t know how this is going to work out but figure we can play with it some, live on the fly. I would add the additional confusion is this also points to cause and effect; a picture of “you” at another “time”. Will see if I can articulate this properly. So just looking at it, you (however you define and is secondary to this point) is looking at a photograph. It is a picture of someone that looks similar to you, albeit younger and dressed in clothes that you remember looking pretty cool, yet today, not so much...(lol). All this is happening in the “now”. The picture has labels (thoughts) attached to it saying something like, “this is me at a xxxx time frame when I was xx years old.” How do you you know this? Well you remember all the “events” (now thoughts/memories) that led up to this moment as well as the events past this (“future” back then, “past” now). What’s weird is.... Every moment of content in the “now” seems to have a past attached to or preceding it. So it seems to be the cause of this current event, regardless of when it actually happened. Interestingly enough, the only thing we can find beyond “the now” is only labels (thoughts) that supposedly happened at some other time. Yet we don’t have anything beyond that to point to any proof of something happening. It’s often gone as quickly as it came, with little proof beyond thoughts (memories) to connect it all together, “trying to keep it alive”. I had this experience going back to my home town of Stamford, CT recently. I grew up there some 40 yrs ago. It’s an old New England town that’s been knocked down and rebuilt, Now Trump Tower and all. 😳... I remember feeling so lost in looking for a past that really didn’t exist anymore. I also remember the urge to “try and keep this past alive”. Yet the only thing I had were some thoughts to prove it all happened. I think without them and time, this whole world we live in doesn’t work very well. Anyway, that’s it for now. Kinda tapped out. Not sure if explained anything except making an attempted walk through it on our own to discover some sort of truth Anyone who wants to expand on this (truly) without playing one upmanship spiritual games, I’m open to it. Thx, Johnny

Since I was a child my image of the year was / is a colorful circle in which events arise. I could see the eternal circle and / or zoom in on weeks or days. Another image was and is a "timeline" (which was never straight) and is somehow connected to the geography of the planet, like a grid, which I can view closely or from a bird's view... To me, time is just a way of measuring change. I tend to see experience as a boiling pot of thickness that bubbles up in expression after expression. Each bubble pops into existence. The desire for time travel, is to me, a desire to re-experience expression. And the only way I can see this happening is through imagination.

Very nice:) It seems like 'The world' or form is passing through us rather than we are passing through 'it' if I have understood correctly? I was feeling a big relief from my normal state of anxiety today after watching this. But something is troubling me in that I want to watch a film tonight which starts in 2 hours but if everything takes place now why can't I watch it now? I know it will be now when I watch it and now while I am waiting but why is it not on the TV now? I suppose I don't understand where the form of now goes or comes from..
@vjagpal10 жыл бұрын
Just like past and future, now (as a unit of time) is just another illusion or say delusion. But only for an objective understanding, I believe now could be as long as a Planck time unit. It is time for light to travel in vacuum for 1 Planck length or say shortest time for information to move or process.

Am i thinking correctly or winding in another illusion??? I know its illusion else I would not have asked you. oh my cosmos! This is kind of very simple understanding yet profound revelation from the stupidity I am doing. In Satipatthana(Vipassana), the teaching is always pointing towards the four aspects ;body,mind,sensation and content of mind. Layer by layer it becomes clearer the one which is watching all these aspects and the four aspect are same, transitory (changing all the time). It is only the collection of events recorded vaguely in memory which give rise to the illusion of linearity of time? There is no I nor any self. Its just an happening to the know er (which is again transitory). OH my cosmos...whirlpool

What we need is an objective understanding of ‘time’ as a physical process! In this theory time is an emergent property with the future continuously coming into existence light photon by light photon. I believe this is what we are seeing when we see an artist at work we are seeing new light photon oscillations or vibrations continuously coming into existence relative to the actions of the artist, a continuous flow of cause and effect. We have free will because the wave particle duality of light is acting like the bits or zeros and ones of a computer. This forms an interactive process continuously forming a blank canvas that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual! This theory explains a greater reality of one creative principle behind the laws of physics forming something like the sounding board of a musical instrument that resonates with the vibrations of one's own thoughts, efforts and actions! This theory takes quantum potential, electrical potential and gravitational potential and combines them into one universal process. That explains why we all have a potential future in our everyday life that is always uncertain. In such a theory consciousness can be explained as electrical activity that is aware of its own electrical potential! Therefore each individual life form is always in ‘the moment of now’ at the forefront of creation within the centre of its own reference frame. This personalization of each one of us being in the centre of our own reference frame can give us the concept of ‘mind’ with each one of us having our own personal view of the Universe. Being able to look back in time in all direction at the beauty of the stars! In such a theory only ‘the moment of now’ exists with the future only existing as a probability function with a past that has gone forever as a process of continuous energy exchange or continuous change. These ideas would support what you believe based on your experience and give it an objective understanding based on physics.

People assume from The Quantum Eraser experiment ,that particles in the past can know the future and behave as if they did. A timeless void of interconnected particles may be a better explanation. Makes you wonder if the past/present/future are all happening Now in a ever changing universe analogous to a movie of causal connection be it somewhat determined and somewhat free? Find the Quantum World quite phenomenal. We still have a lot to discover

Roger Hornaday No not at all I believe the day will come when quantum mechanics will be seen as the physics of 'time' as a physical process! With classical physics representing process over a period of time as in Newton's differential equations. In this theory the mathematics of quantum mechanics represents the dynamics geometry of a physical process that we see and feel as the continuum of time. This is a process formed by the spontaneous absorption and emission of light photon energy. This forms a continuous process of energy exchange that forms the ever changing world of our everyday life. The Universe is a continuum with the future coming into existence photon by photon with each new photon electron coupling or dipole moment. This forms the movement of positive and negative charge with the continuous flow of electromagnetic fields. Consciousness as electrical activity in the brain is the most advanced part of this process and can therefore comprehend this process as 'time'. With a past that has gone forever and a future that is always uncertain in form of a probability function. Therefore each individual is in the center of their own reference frame as an interactive part of this process being able to look back in time in all directions at the beauty of the stars! At the smallest scale of this process this uncertainty is seen as Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle with the Planck constant being a constant of action in the dynamics of space and time! The creation of awareness
@markbrad12310 жыл бұрын
A new interpretation of quantum mechanics an artist theory on the physics of 'time' If you go by the General Theory of Relativity, things change at a slower or faster rate relative to the speed at which their on, since the speed of light compensates to remain a constant. So a light clock would slow down if it was on an object traveling at speed toward the event horizon of a black hole. Thus it could be said some of the Universe is in the past and some in the future as a relative rate of change. This is why satellites have to compensate their clocks to sync with on earth actual time. So that is Einsteins general model. However with Quantum Entanglement particles can have a symmetry no matter where in space time they are. What Einstein called 'Spooky distance'. So is time just an illusion and there is just a Now state at which all the Universe is interconnected ? I think we have to look into Entropy(decay) of objects traveling at relative speeds to see if this speed really effects aging to maybe discover an answer to this question.Imagine you could Entangle two identical clones on two planets traveling at different speeds, which one would grow older faster or not ?

Memory and imagination create the illusion of present; There is no space between the non existent past and the not yet existent future greater than Plank time - 10 to the minus 43 seconds- in which a "now" can exist. Consciousness extends across the reach of time to allow awareness. Machines can never achieve consciousness: They can not bridge the past and future.

The future can and has been experienced as a now, many times. This percieved now, hasn't occured yet in physical present time. It will occur exactly as percieved later. This is experienced in full concious awareness as you have in reading this. The 'present now' is unknown during these perceptions. It only becomes apparent when you 'return' to the present now. That experienced of the future event becomes the now when the time difference is zero. It isn't your now experience generally. The event itself is the now for others involved. You see the event on the news...

How is it that some psychics are able to predict future events? Say a plane crash 5 days from now. Yes, the prediction and the correct outcome are realized in the “ now” but since every moment is now, why study or even give it any thoughts? Once you accept the now as being eternally here every moment, then there’s nothing more to do? I love reliving certain past events-so what if they are experienced now. Big deal. What’s the big deal? Books like “be here now” the ...Of now” why read these books. Everyone is in the now every moment. I guess what these books are trying to do ( I haven’t read Tolle or Ram Das) is to make you live more in the present now rather than the past or future now. Am I right. There is a past there is a future and it is experienced now. Why all these books and lectures? Can anyone help me here. Do I speak the truth? Thank you in advance ( oops, by the time you read this and respond it will be in the now). Al

"How is it that some psychics are able to predict future events? Say a plane crash 5 days from now. " Maybe there are 2 approaches: one out of the view of the seperate self who doesnt`t understand how details in future could be predicted. one out of the nondual self where only being is there, and where tenses have no meaning any more. I would like to understand prediction either, from the view of the seperate self, maybe someone other has an explanation.....

Advaita is nonsense . The View is Self-Contradictory: The first problem with the core of Sankara’s philosophy is that it seems to be self-contradictory. As advocates of the other Hindu schools of thought have pointed out, if the only reality is Brahman, and Brahman is pure, distinctionless consciousness, then there cannot exist any real distinctions in reality. But the claim that this world is an illusion already presupposes that there is an actual distinction between illusion and reality, just as the claim that something is a dream already presupposes the distinction between waking consciousness and dream consciousness. Moreover, Sankara’s idea of salvation-that is, enlightenment through recognition that all is Brahman-already presupposes a distinction between living in a state of unenlightenment (ignorance) and living in a state of enlightenment. So this view contradicts itself by, on the one hand, saying that reality (Brahman) is distinctionless, while on the other hand distinguishing between maya and the truth of Brahman, and by distinguishing between being enlightened and unenlightened. b. The Impossibility of Maya: A second and related problem is that ignorance, which Sankara and his followers claim is the source of maya, could not exist. According to the Sankara school, Brahman is perfect, pure, and complete Knowledge, the opposite of ignorance. Hence, ignorance cannot exist in Brahman. But, since nothing exists apart from Brahman, ignorance cannot exist apart from Brahman either. Thus, it follows that ignorance could not exist, contrary to their assertion that our perception of a world of distinct things is a result of ignorance. c. The Lack of Evidence: A final problem is that it seems that one could never have any satisfactory experiential basis for believing in Sankara’s philosophy. Certainly, everyday experience and observation are completely in conflict with his claim, since they overwhelmingly testify to the existence of a real world of distinct things and properties. Indeed, even if we assume that the entire material world does not exist, but is merely a dream, experience would still overwhelmingly testify against Sankara’s claim: for, within our dream itself there are innumerable distinct experiences, from the experience of feeling sad to that of seeing what looks like a rainbow. Thus Sankara’s philosophy cannot even explain the world we experience as being an illusion or dream. As a result, it ends up providing close to the worse possible explanation of our experiences. This last problem should put to rest the common assertion that aspects of modern physics, particularly quantum mechanics, supports this, or similar systems of Eastern thought such as Zen Buddhism (see below). The scientific method consists of performing various observations of the world, and then trying to construct hypotheses that explain these observations. We then choose the hypothesis that makes the best sense of these observations, and reject those hypotheses that significantly conflict with observation. Because Sankara’s philosophy is in conflict with almost all of our observations, science by its very methodology could never give us good reason to believe it, but rather every reason to reject it.
