Since filming this vid Sony have released a 600mm f/4 and also a 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3. The 600mm f/4 is waaaaay out of my price range but the latter is interesting. Would I have chosen that over the 100-400mm? I'm not sure, I need to get my hands on one and compare :)

@@AlynWallace There are two judgments and opinions I'm looking forward to: yours and Mark Smith's: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kILMoHdjo6-YorM&t=940. This is based on the work you two publish on KZbin. Watching the part when you were back in your study made me smile. I had my 100-400 (OK, mine is a Canon) on my desk next to me and my vape next to my mouse (looks a very similar mod - Geek Vape). I had to do a double take... I'm also just down the road from where you were filming the first part of the video... Anyway, great channel and thanks for sharing. I've shot landscape, travel and nature shots for many years and I'm just starting to expand my horizons (!) by shooting wildlife. Astro is the next thing I want to try, but it's probably going to be the hardest genre for me to get my head around so I'm really enjoying watching your work and learning a bit before I give it a try. Cheers, stay safe.

A few years back I came across a telescope kit by Bresser. The telescope itself was "not terrible" but, the tripod and equatorial mount were surprisingly sturdy. Paid about 50 Euros for the whole kit. Only used the telescope once but the tripod and mount both get used a lot. The equatorial mount is manual but, even so, properly aligned and I can track stars easily. Well, easier, cold fingers make everything difficult.

You may have inspired me to write a paper on "The deleterious effects of astrophotography on the nasal cavities." :) Glad you can appreciate the fresh air again. I was with a team measuring pollution in the Welsh Valleys back in the early 70s. You might have been grateful for not being able to smell anything back then because of the excessive levels of pollution. Downwind of any of those tar and smokeless-fuel plants would have taken years off your life. Coal dust from the mines was everywhere, even on the tops of mountains where we had deposition gauges. Downriver of coal-washing plants were dire. They all had a river-bottom of black sludge. The restoration of the valleys has been nothing short of a miracle. If you told us back then that people would one day be fighting for fishing licenses, we would have laughed in your face. Well done Wales, keep it beautiful. I'm almost homesick.

I look forward to your review of the 200-600. I love that it has internal focus, and can use the TCs! I recently picked up the 100-400 slightly used and at a discount, a lens I’ve wanted after renting it a couple of times. In my mind the 200-600 would compliment my kit, rather than replace my 100-400, which is super sharp, compact and small enough to throw in my small shoulder bag when I go for walks in my local refuge. The 200-600 might push me to letting go of my nikon wildlife kit. As always, I enjoyed your video - thank you!

I am really amazed that the 200-600 came so late. I was thinking the 200-600 is already for like 10 years the "best" longer wildlife/telezoom lens for sony. Im impressed how well the 100-400 performs, but its a pretty expensive GM lens, so i guess it just fits. Makes me even more wondering why i picked a Canon RF 800 F11 (on APS-C... super tight)... the 100-400 GM with 2x Teleconverter is basically a RF 800 with zoom function and probably optically even better.

Ever tryout the Bridge cameras, for recording the Moon? The Nikon P610, B700, B600, and Sony Rx10IV, and Panasonic FZ1000, capture amazing detail of the Moon. Also, if you are on a budget with a DSLR (the Nikon D5300, cost me a year's savings), definitely consider using a adapter for your camera and taking images with a spotting scope or a 4-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain scope. Definitely have a tripod that can support the weight. Although sometimes I will rest the camera and scope on the roads and use a natural rock (or flashlight), to jack-up the lens. It works.

At 3:58 - Small correction - it's not Earth's light that is reflected off the moon, the effect you're describing is the the result of the sun's light, and that light reflected off the moon travels through more of Earth's atmosphere on its approach to you, which scatters the light (affecting shorter wavelengths more), so you see longer wavelengths of light at your eye/camera, i.e. light tending to red.

What do you think about using this gear head in place of the ball head on top of the tracker. I have an iOptron Skyguider Pro and am starting to play with deep space photography and after a very infuriating night of setting and resetting my ball head repeatedly due to "droopage" (shooting a Nikon D500 and 200-500/5.6) a friend of mine recommended maybe looking at a 3gear. I stumbled across this benroe option and am super intrigued by it. I am very reassured to see that this gear head is something you deem viable for astro.
