Time for Tea with Rofida, a Cancer Genomics STP

Hi everyone, today I chatted with Rofida, who’s on the Cancer Genomics stream also in Birmingham (I promise I’m going to go outside of Brum soon..)! It was lovely to catch up and she had some really good points about the application process, especially that it doesn’t just depend on you as an applicant but the rest of your pool, so try not to feel disheartened if it takes a couple of tries! She’s just finishing the bioinformatics rotation, so it was interesting to hear about what it’s like trying to refocus on something a bit less related to our backgrounds.
As Rofida said, there’s loads of information on the NSHCS website about what you might be studying, so we’d definitely recommend you have a look there :) nshcs.hee.nhs.... If you’re not sure whether to apply for the Cancer Genomics or Genomics stream, programme-wise Rofida will be doing an extended Cancer Genomics rotation this year, whilst Christina and I will be doing Reproductive Science and Genomic Counselling rotations (however this can differ slightly between different training sites).

Hi there, I have an undergraduate degree in Sport and Exercise Science but followed it up with postgraduate study in physiology (focussing my independent study on cancer research), what is the likelihood of me getting onto the Cancer Genomics STP as I have not covered enough about genetics/cancer throughout the entirety of my study but rather only focussed deeply on it for my summer project. Thanks!

Hi Ashley, I obviously don't know the specifics of the applications, however it sounds like you have an interest in CG and have experience in it through your dissertation/project. It is quite competitive so you'd need to show your understanding and potentially, if you didn't get in this year, do some further research to help strengthen your application. I'd definitely give it a shot though as you get lots of experience from applying - I got in on my 2nd try and the 1st application helped me so much in my 2nd!
