I admire Mrs Mac shifting those tiles, you two make a great team. Very interesting video and the birds nests took me back to doing my daughter's house in 2002. Coming from the USA plains with slab on grade and 2x4 walls this building method is so different. The inner and outer block leaves and roof tiles …madness. We even have tornadoes and we expect a 2x4 wall full of fiberglass with wood siding and drywall to somehow protect us. Alternatively we have really deep eaves to block the 38°C+ sun in August but still allow the Southern sun in winter. Life just restarted after a 6” snowfall… we only get 1-2 snowstorms a season.

Hi Andy great progress thanks for the update. Changing the subject slightly I've now finished my end-of- garden drum studio and I must say it's virtually silent! Build spec of this 5.5 x 3.5 as follows.... External walls from outside... Render 100mm dense blocks 100mm RW5 100mm stud wall filled with RW5 15mm Soundbloc Tecsound 15mm soundbloc Skim Heavy curtains (Dunelm thermal) Roof.... EPDM OSB 200mm to 150mm of RW5 Isolating channels 15mm soundbloc Tecsound 15mm soundbloc Skim. Double "air-lock" door system using ply-covered fire door inside and Lathams steel personnel door outside. 2 small back-to-back windows (outer window opens outwards, inner window fitted with reversed handle so it can open inwards). Really really quiet, I hope yours works out well for you.

@GosforthHandyman 2 жыл бұрын
Wow that's fantastic! If we ever get a back door on our house I'll be able to move my workshop in to the garage and continue with my studio room. How did you find the 15mm soundbloc on the iso channels on the ceiling? Take the weight OK? 👍
@darland3821
@darland3821 2 жыл бұрын
@@GosforthHandyman I was quite sceptical and so increased the number of hangers from their recommended number slightly but if you calculate the weight of the ceiling divided by the number of hangers it's quite reasonable per hanger. Incidentally a tip for creating the ceiling sandwich is to fit one sheet pb first then while the next sheet is laying on the board lift, cover it with tecsound then lift the double-layer up to the first layer. No way can you stick the tecsound up to the ceiling!

Most that have an issue with the spray insulation on the roofs are roofers who have seen the damage first hand. I would not want it in my roof and if I was buying a house with it I would replace it as soon as possible ... but I'm a roofer so easy fix for me.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 2 жыл бұрын
As I say, I've heard of horror stories where the roof is leaking, there's no sarking and they've just covered it in spray foam - bad idea. Not my preference either but it shouldn't make houses un-mortgageable. 👍

Regarding the foam Roger bisby says similar , mortgage companies say it makes inspection difficult, but like he says most of it's behind plasterboard anyway
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 2 жыл бұрын
Yup - would concur with his views. Last few mortgage surveys we've seen they didn't even bother to enter the property, never mind look in the loft. 😂

@@GosforthHandyman mortgage inspection the breeding ground for ppe suppliers, I always remember the report on my dad's bungalow " needs treatment for wood rot in floor " it had a solid floor Do you find the cut off saw heavy I tried one a while ago and it was a lot heavier than my petrol stihl , I have a cordless 9" stihl nice and light but only 60mm cutting depth

I know you talked about vertical DPC at the start of the video. Would this be needed if I was building an internal stud wall which would meet an external brick wall?

I thought the concerns were about trapped condensate and lack of ventilation of the rafters. The old guy might not have been drying that much washing, cooking that much or creating that much water vapour but tl you might. Especially as you have taken steps to reduce air leaks with the floor ventilation.
@GosforthHandyman
@GosforthHandyman 2 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming with closed-cell it acts as a vapour barrier so wouldn't allow condensate to track through? Something I'll keep an eye on.

Nice team work, it reminds me of when my wife and I were younger, we bought an old house and did it up, she did the demolition and I reconstructed. :-) Back in those days Artex ceilings were all the rage, my wife volunteered to do ours and ended up covered in it, bless her.

Hit the nail on the head re spray foam insulation. Sarking / roofing felt needs to be in tip top condition before application. Any leaks = recipe for disaster in time. Re cutting the inner wall dry, 2 out of 3 PPE boxes ticked - wear a mask, that dust is a killer..

Don't know about other parts of the world, but the big downside of spray foam here in Australia is the cost when compared to other types of insulation.

Looks great Andy. The birds nest under the ridge tiles will likely to have been Starlings...they love nesting under tiles or slates. Had to remove nearly 5 square metres of my parents roof one year just to get rid of a huge nest. Filthy job and not much fun.
