Coming from the USA plains with slab on grade and 2x4 walls this building method is so different. The inner and outer block leaves and roof tiles …madness. We even have tornadoes and we expect a 2x4 wall full of fiberglass with wood siding and drywall to somehow protect us. Alternatively we have really deep eaves to block the 38°C+ sun in August but still allow the Southern sun in winter. Life just restarted after a 6” snowfall… we only get 1-2 snowstorms a season.

Hi Andy great progress thanks for the update. Changing the subject slightly I've now finished my end-of- garden drum studio and I must say it's virtually silent! Build spec of this 5.5 x 3.5 as follows.... External walls from outside... Render 100mm dense blocks 100mm RW5 100mm stud wall filled with RW5 15mm Soundbloc Tecsound 15mm soundbloc Skim Heavy curtains (Dunelm thermal) Roof.... EPDM OSB 200mm to 150mm of RW5 Isolating channels 15mm soundbloc Tecsound 15mm soundbloc Skim. Double "air-lock" door system using ply-covered fire door inside and Lathams steel personnel door outside. 2 small back-to-back windows (outer window opens outwards, inner window fitted with reversed handle so it can open inwards). Really really quiet, I hope yours works out well for you.
@GosforthHandyman2 жыл бұрын
Wow that's fantastic! If we ever get a back door on our house I'll be able to move my workshop in to the garage and continue with my studio room. How did you find the 15mm soundbloc on the iso channels on the ceiling? Take the weight OK? 👍
@darland38212 жыл бұрын
@@GosforthHandyman I was quite sceptical and so increased the number of hangers from their recommended number slightly but if you calculate the weight of the ceiling divided by the number of hangers it's quite reasonable per hanger. Incidentally a tip for creating the ceiling sandwich is to fit one sheet pb first then while the next sheet is laying on the board lift, cover it with tecsound then lift the double-layer up to the first layer. No way can you stick the tecsound up to the ceiling!

I thought the concerns were about trapped condensate and lack of ventilation of the rafters. The old guy might not have been drying that much washing, cooking that much or creating that much water vapour but tl you might. Especially as you have taken steps to reduce air leaks with the floor ventilation.

I'm assuming with closed-cell it acts as a vapour barrier so wouldn't allow condensate to track through? Something I'll keep an eye on.
