My grand father studied astronomy in Sri Lanka, and I had the good fortune of meeting Sir Clarke with my grand father in the early 80s. The two of them used to be good friends. I never realized I was standing next to a genius at that age.

I'm a Srilankan and Clerke passed away in his house here. His last wish was to burry him with absolutely no media coverage or any such "promotions". And he emphasised to not to cremate his body, so he can give back what he got from the earth to the earth.

Just wanted to pay my respects to Arthur C. Clarke, my favourite SF writer and someone who always tried to put the focus on a positive view of the human future, while also conveying the sheer wonder of the cosmos, the remarkable uses of technology and the necessity of mankind taking it's place in space. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get hold of most of Clarke's non-fiction writing (I don't care if it is out of date by now), but I have read 75% of his fiction. Thank you Arthur and rest in peace.

MR Clarke was not just a science fiction writer he was also a highly respected scientist...during WW2 he invented a system for clearing fog from British airfields called FIDO, a very brilliant man.

My definition of science fiction: You are expected to have a reasonable amount of science in your fiction; you are also permitted to have a reasonable amount of fiction in your science.

I like it how he didn't mince words about his tense relationship with CS Lewis. Always thought Clarke to be rather timid and non-confrontational, but he openly admitted to not getting along with Lewis. Must've hated his guts!

I watched the movie The Black Hole from 1979. Today it would be considered a kids movie but back then it was a pretty big deal. I turned out to be a version of Captain Nemo.

It could not happen, in theory, could, as we cannot project science of tomorrow. I will say that so long as he steers clear of writing soaps and "domestic dramas" in space, that most sci-fi is these days, I am all for hard science fictions only if it is based on dark sci-fi ironies rather than what most authors consider "science fiction" which is nothing more than space operas. I am new to Arthur C. Clarke but I am impressed so far, I have read "A Walk in the Dark". and listened to a radio drama called "Alien Worlds" both are quite good.

9:40 Strange how intelligent men like Clarke can understand advanced beings exploring and visiting earth in the past, but thinks its nonsense that any could be doing it in the present.

Not sure why some scientists believe that extraterrestrial "may" have visited sometime in the past but in no way shape or form could be visiting today. Why do some believe that the Earth would be no big deal?? If we found a single microbe originating outside the Earth, it would be the greatest discovery in the history of mankind. Surely an entire, thriving biosphere, complete with intelligent creatures capable of interplanetary travel would be worthy of investigation by even the most advanced creatures in the universe, and would be of continued observational interest.
