I chose to purchase a 6 inch Pneumatic Mirka Sander when I was looking to upgrade a few years ago. Ive had a 6 inch Ingersol Rand for 20 plus years that had the sticky back platen. But with the advent and commonality of Hook and Loop pads I felt I needed to upgrade. Ive had a background in Autobody since 1999, so the low profile Mirka was a no brainer since I do both Woodworking and Autobody still. Plus buying Pneumatic tools are much cheaper up front and last a very long time as long you keep them clean and oiled. One tip I can give is to save your old sanding belts for belt sanders. They are great for custom sanding blocks. You can just cut to say an 8 inch length and glue it to a scrap piece of hardwood. I also have to second your tip to not skimp on Sandpaper! You will get far better results wilh the pricier paper and it will last much longer. I really like the Norton Sheet paper. Up here in Kanuckistan it goes for about $6 per pack of 3. For 6 inch discs, you cant beat 3M Cubitron II.

That’s awesome, thanks for the great feedback on the Mirka 6” with your background of real world experience…the best kind of advice. I’ve visited quite a few production woodworking shops over the years and they always seemed to have the pneumatic sanders going, and usually when I checked they were Mirka brand. I’m going to give them a try when I set up my air lines from the downstairs compressor to the upstairs shop. Thanks for watching and for the great info! 👍😎

Enjoyed watching after the event -- could have used some of these tips a couple days ago when I was finishing up a couple simple end tables!

i hate sanding so much. Are there drawbacks to just not doing it? Like if I'm happy with the surface after card scraping, I just go right to shellac. Is that going to be a problem for me down the line in some way?

oop, guess you answered it in the last question :-)

When lacquering your work, sanding end grain with at least 2 grits finer than on the flat areas, can bring the normally darker end grain lacquered colour closer to the flat grain lacquered colour. As you've shown, planing end grain first should help, too.

Okay, thank you, I’ll check it out sometime, I had not noticed that effect in the past 👍
