Time-Sert Demonstration to Save Subaru Motor Salvage Subaru Part 4 of 6

This Subaru was left behind as a loss because the oil leak was SO BAD that it would cost more than the car is worth according to local shops. Here's a DEMONSTRATION of the kit I'm using to fix it. It's the TIME-SERT M11x1.25 to replace the stripped out engine threads the head bolts go into.

I got a 2002 Kia Sportage given to me from someone at my church. I like you tube videos that explain things and the person knows what they are talking about. You have that gift. I can't afford to do much to my Kia and I told the person that, but I accepted it. It only has 127,000 miles on it, but my suspension is pretty rusty. I'll drive it until it gives out. Nice work mate, I haven't have a car over 7 years due to my tough budget but early last year I finally was able to get one. This is a 2001 Subaru Outback and I've done a lot of work on it. I had to work on the engine and your videos help me a lot - thanks. In the next few weeks I will have my vehicle back on the roads and it's runnning nicely now. Thanks Flint. I wish I could please everyone all the time, but despite efforts I've made... can't. I have to watch these videos about 9-10 times while I edit them. My sanity stays in tact better if there's music in them. And they reach more viewers and they stay for the whole video better if there's music. I found a way to fine tune the volume better on this one. It takes longer, but seems to help.

When we sandblast welds to coat we use blue painters tape then duct tape over. So the blue stuff usually comes off really well even in a hot hooch to keep the moisture low.

I've replaced head gaskets on two of these engines. Didn't have a problem with the original threads. Guess I was lucky. Good to know that if I ever do, there is a fix. I've seen this procedure done on the Toyota engines.

I bought a time sert but if it is replacing threads in a blind hole, you would have to know the entire length of the blind hole and buy a sert that length because the threaded insert doesn't allow a bolt to pass all the way thru it. There is a stop at the end of the inset.

Great video Brian. One thing though, I am certain that the first tool you used was a reamer and not a drill bit. Reamers should only be turned clockwise otherwise you damage the cutting edge by turning it backwards. Since this was aluminum it shouldn't have rolled the sharp edge too much but if you have several holes to ream out you will probably start noticing a difference in its performance.

Same thing happened to our outback, the original owner had someone who didn't k ow what they were doing do the head gaskets. So now we are out $4000 to have a new block.

I have used "Timesert" to repair a stripped cam bolt on a 1.6l Kia. I made my own guides. The only problem was with the install tool not forcing the Timesert far enough into the hole. Since I needed to have the surface of the insert below the surface of the cam seat. I was able to make it work. You should make a practice hole before making you first repair.

King of educational real world repairs! Question, how is the lift/pump holding up. How is the coating if... say... it was used in a carport in rainy Oregon??? Ha ha. Is that an amazon item as well? Thank you and happy new year!

The pump is doing great! The lines leak at the quick connect fittings a little due to grit. I'd cover it up. The bottom coating gets hammered from sliding it in place and back. That would rust stain your driveway in a hurry. They WERE on amazon, but I can't find them there anymore. Best deal I've seen on the quickjack bl-5000slx was at Costco.

Killer way to save the block. I've heard from Subaru nerds that those Felpro head gaskets are no bueno, that the Subaru MLS gaskets used on the Turbo engines are best... I don't know, I've only rebuilt Chevy small blocks. Seems legit...

This is what I like about Brian,he does poop right unlike myself who drills and taps one size larger and installs studs red loc tited in and use head washers and nuts like on a raggedy Furd international.or a built Cumminapart or even my old Mopars.. ARP is my friend for these non problems...

Great video Brian, I have a stripped bolt on my 95 Subaru 2.2 it is the bolt furthest from the crank on the long piston type of cam belt tensioner and for the life of me I cannot find what size that bolt is? I will need to put in a "sert" in there next time I change the timing belt and rollers, I may try a longer bolt however don't know the pitch and size. 320,000 miles on this engine and still going strong. great engine . I may have missed it, but did you repair the upper left first? You used that to hold the plate in place, and I thought that was the stripped bolt location. Either way, I love your videos especially the subtle humor, keeps it entertaining.

Hi Brian I watch your vids. And I like them you are great. I have a question about something that happened to me when overhauling my 2000 jeep 4.0l. When I took the number six back piston out it didn't have an oil ring on the lower groove. Nor was the wall messed up nor remnants to be found in oil pan of one ever being there. Can you reuse the head gaskets if you only used them when you were first changing them and then the head bolt thread stripped? I did the time sert but wondered if I should get new gaskets again? The engine never ran with them in yet.Just stripped the head bolt thread and took off again.

is this process different if it is on a hole that has the alignment dowel pin? if i drill it and take material out will the dowel pin no longer fit?

I just finished replacing my head gaskets and I too now have the pooling of oil on top of the engine, along with the oil waterfall down the back of the block 😞.

Oh and by the way that fan problem that you gave me some advice on, has stopped being a problem. I don't remember if I told you but the radiator was also leaking and I had a spare van to steal the radiator from so with the radiator I took the fan assembly so as I did not have more stuff to take apart. The fans are working now. Not sure what fixed it as the old fans worked when I applied 12 volts to them. Maybe a loose connection some where and when I did the radiator and fan assembly R and R the connection was re-established. Have a great won.

I used Helicopters for two of mine. Had to double up and torqued up fine. Went to 70ftlbs and holding fine. Did it in vehicle as well. NEVER again as I usually pull the motor. I got lazy. Not worth the pain. Pull he motor.

Yes. They're coated and the loctite helps too. Once you get into recycling metal you realize steel is all over inside any aluminum block or head. Your dowels, valve seats and all kinds of alignment pins and bolts are all steel in aluminum. Happy New Year Paul!

There's a 1mm gap between the stab dowel and the engine block surface. The foil is to keep chips from getting into the rest of the engine. Foil is for cleanliness and me being able to sleep at night without worrying about them causing problems in the cooling system, piston ring landings, and oily bits. Welcome! If you were building an engine for a high power application, would someone do this preventatively (or as a necessity) in order to torque the bolts higher?

It's a quickjack bl-5000slx. It's great for it's portability. You can move it by hand and lean the jacks against the wall when you're not using them →
