Writer, curator and critic of architecture, Mohamed Elshahed discusses time, space and objects of Egyptian modernity. The architectures designed and built over the last century or so in the Arab region have faced many forms of erasure. Focusing on Egypt, the Arab region's most populous country, Mohamed discusses examples on the history of modern architecture, design and material culture in the country.

In 2011, he founded Cairobserver, a fluid project centered on Cairo’s urban condition with six printed magazines distributed for free at events in Cairo, Beirut and Dubai to stimulate public debates around issues of architecture, heritage and urbanism. Mohamed is a Paul Mellon Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study at the National Gallery in Washington DC, and is 2023-24 fellow at the Columbia University Institute for Ideas and Imagination in Paris.

An amazing presentation ! The Alan Watts quote providing a background to the presentation was so appropriate. “Our engagement with the world and how we understand it”. , what a fascinating study! Need more of this kind of research. So innovative. The floor mural wearing out as people walk over it, as a metaphor for time and what is lost through inattention etc is powerful.
