Hearing Helen talk about her personal life is so intricately linked to Sutton Hoo made me emotional. It is just not a "dig" it is a lifetime project in the making, it is the culmination of everything she, other scholars and volunteers have worked for so long. Regardless of what they find, just the fact that it came to this is already a big thing. It shows that hard work and years of planning were worth the wait and that the fact that it took so long means that the technology can be of great help now. Years ago there are things that wouldn't be possible to be done the same way it can be done now. I'm just so excited and so happy that it is finally coming to life!

TT is my favourite program and it probably always will be. It was so great to hear Helen talk about her earlier days and describe the excitement, as well as the camaraderie between associate groups of archaeologists. You can hear the excitement in her voice when she talks about Sutton Hoo and Anglo Saxon's, in general. How exciting it must be for Helen and all the other archaeologists and TT crew! I am positive that many amazing items will be found, and the information the team uncovers will be so valuable. Thank to Helen and Matt and everyone on Time Team! Even more exciting is that my husband has worked for 17 years at the very same honey farm providing the bees wax for the calking for Sutton Hoo boat rebuild. Only we didn't know the bosses brother was married to our beloved Helen. How amazing is that?

I'm so sorry, but I can't help but think of Mick, Victor, Robin and of course Phill who would have been thrilled to be there. From that first episode of ONLY field walking Athelny; then the team's awe and wonder at seeing the GeoPhys pop up line by line on a tablet... and now to actually digging Sutton Hoo! I'm over come with emotion, and yes, it's a migraine and other health issues. I'm a Texan who didn't find Time Team until after they were cancelled, but I've watched every single episode up to 5 times, over the years. We are all so blessed for these people and their hard work.

Thanks Helen, I feel guilty now for not being a patreon. Maybe this is the new way forward for archaeological popular culture. Crowd funded projects that can trigger support by national institutions and Government bodies for the sake of national interests. A sincere show of interest in the search for ‘our story in history by a dedicated community. More promotion for truth seekers rather than storytelling grifters. I’m amazed about how they can dig up dirt and work out what it was used for ‘in the olden days’. I appreciate that someone takes the time to do it, and edit the results so I don’t have to. I think you’ll be my first patreon sign up, The twinkle in Helen’s eye when she expressed thanks made me want to be one too. Thanks present, passed and future patreons. You are the truth seekers too!

Helen's final comment was what got my emotions roiled. That she and her colleagues had wanted to do the project for so long, but finding a patron or grant source was the limiting factor just made the Time Team patreon project come into focus. In antiquity, you would have to find some wealthy person who was interested enough or just liked the academic enough to toss a lot of money in. Now, it's all sorts of fans around the world who are making it possible for people like Helen to take their considerable expertise and enormous curiosity and make amazing discoveries!

Oh WoW!! To see one of THE most significant sites from Sub-Roman Britannia (not even yet England) subjected to the marvels of modern kit producing telemetry even John Gator could scarcely have dreamed of back in 1994 (30 years ago? Ye Gods!!) is beyond anything I'd have thought possible when, by popular acclaim, Time Team rose from the ashes just two years ago. Mick Aston, Victor Ambrus and Ian Barclay may sadly no longer be with us, but I'm certain all three would've particularly relished working on this internationally recognised site and I'm sure I won't be the only one to think of them during this dig. How overexcited do I sound? ... and my favourite period ends where the Romans rock up! 🙂 Can't wait for the full episodes.
