I have a Tesla X. Happy with it until I saw the Y. The Y will do everything I need it to do. But the downside is the range on the Y comparatively to the X… (I do a fair amount of long distance driving). The matter for me is that Tesla still has the infrastructure. And yes, they’re opening it to other car makes. But gosh darn - the infrastructure is the biggest thing for me right now.

I’d like to drive the Audi but every time I think of not getting the tesla I realise what you buy is what you get and that’s it, where as I just saw the plaid get a software update for improved suspension, all things can be changed and improved and made better over time and I can’t get away from the idea of having a car that improves. The finish of the taycan and Audi are lovely but there’s something so appealing about the plaid…purely my opinion and people will be wildly different so no need for any vitriol in the comments.

Really good and entertaining video of a high-end car I will never buy. As mentioned in a comment below, the people buying these will help fund the development of and test-bed the tech for cheaper cars in the range. What intrigues me is that the traditional ICE versions of very expensive cars don’t seem to reach old age very often, apart from those that get picked up by an enthusiast. They are so complex and expensive to fix when they get old that a 20 year old BMW 7 or Jag XJ for example gets scrapped before a similar age and mileage Toyota for example. But with so many fewer components and sub-systems it should be possible to keep high-end EVs on the road for much longer before they are no longer worth the candle to repair. It will be interesting to see how things work out as EVs age.

Having got a Tesla MS P100D took it out for a test drive to see if it would be a replacement for when my lease ends. Good bit: Painted well. Panel gaps which are much better than my MS. General fit nd finish are all good. Head up display - this is really handy in an EV without the engine pitch directly related to the roadspeed. Keeping to the speedlimit particularly in urban areas requires constant checking so having the current speed and current limit in your line of sight is great. Supportive front seats. 360 camera - so useful in a big car with expensive wheels. Why Tesla can't manage this when even a Leaf has it I don't know. Rear steering - the dealer I test drove from has a tight parking space and it was amazingly easy to slot into a space. Performance - pretty impressive, but I've been spoilt. The linearity and instant responsiveness of the MS is the gold standard. Ride quality is excellent and it handled some rough roads amazingly well. I've got the pre-raven non adaptive suspension and its a hard ride on 21" wheels. This is so much better. Also feels like the handling is good, although I didn't get an oportunity to test this properly due to the dealer keeping me most of the time in suburbia. It will be interesting to compare with the Polestar with the Ohlins which was amazing. The bad bits: It looks like they forgot to finish the front of the car. Even with the optional (cost) extra painted front oval there is still a load of black plastic. This is the worst style part of the car. The rest is not bad. Obviously a subjective thing. Ultimately they have finally made an iPhone but are trying to make it feel like a Nokia. Big center console for the transmission tunnel which isn't there. But the two worst bits are the internal sound which you can't turn off only "subdue". It rumbles the speaker as you pull away to simulate the clutch engaging and the engine labouring then continues with some fake rumbly whine. No option to make it nice a quiet. I don't want it to feel like an old fashioned ICE car. Then there is the regen - take your foot off the go peddle and it just rolls like you're in neutral. You have to swap back and forth all the time to adjust your speed. You don't have engine breaking like in an ICE car even. It's a lot less relaxing and feels again like they don't want to embrace the advantages of EVs. I don't like the mass of buttons and dials of all random shapes and size spread liberally everywhere around the cabin. Again it just feel like a Blackberry/Nokia in the iPhone age. Screens are again old school and small coming from a Tesla. Only the Ford Mach-E is close. Audi has lots of menus, sub menus etc. The need a modern UI designer to help them, and a Tesla for a few weeks/long trips. You need to be able to easily see on the screen the map, charge stops, how long for. Boot enterance is so small for such a large car. Having just done a "GT tour" to Cornwall from Essex with the family for a week there was no way we would have taken half what we got in our MS. Chatting to an E-Tron driver at a stop also doing the trip from Essex she said the range and charging infrastructure added a few hours adn stress levels to the journey. Stopping at a broken charger she said she looked longingly at a row of Tesla superchargers nearby. Rear seat headroom may well be the thing that ultimately rules it out for our family as my son is almost 6 foot. Agree with the review it's just too cramped. You'd bang you head on the side roof bar on every bend - much like the Polestar. Home changing there didn't seem to be an easy way of setting the charge time, stop time. Again if you actually use an EV as a dialy driver and home chanrge you know you want to be on a cheap night time tariff (like Octopus GO). Also you can't seem to set the charge speed, again important for those with home Solar PV where you match the charge level to the excess from your solar rather than sending it back onto the grid E.g. I might have 2Kw spare but I don't want to charge the car at full speed ie 7Kw as I'd be paying the expensive day rate for the extra 5Kw. Little things which Tesla have added are missing like remembering where you set the suspension / fold mirrors so when you arrive there again it changes. At the deal there is a steep ramp and I put the car up both times I took the car out, but it doesn't geotag. Dashcam is something like a £700-800 optional extra, but Tesla just added it with a free software update and a £10 USB drive off Amazon. Range / efficiency seemes low for a car with such a large battery. If Tesla ever start selling the MS in the UK again I would replace mine with another one when my current lease ends. But if it's not arriving until late next year I might have to consider this car. I didn't get to see the App and the dealer was unable to demonstrate it. I showed them my Tesla app and how I could control lots of things from the phone which turns out to be super handy. I can remotely unlock it and allow people to drive it, start/stop charging, see it's location/speed etc on a map. and a load more things.

Jack, the other point you forgot to mention about expensive cars is the dribble down effect... advances in technology arrive in the expensive cars, then companies recoup their R&D costs and the technologies eventually become standard in all cars. Look at ABS, ESC, and more currently the recent advances in lane departure warning, active cruise control etc. All these technologies started in the high end vehicles and over time have become standard and even required in some instances.

Great video but a few terrible points, specifically the bit in response to the critics of it being another big expensive EV. You are right that “we need all shapes and sizes of EV”, but that only backs the critics pointing out we already have the Taycan, the Model S, the EQS, etc in this size and price point. And looking at your video list, the latest 10 reviews of UK destined cars is this, the Model Y, the EQS, Q4 E-tron, EV6, Polestar 2, I-Pace, XC40, Enyaq and ID.4, only of which the last 2 you might be able to argue as “affordable”. The point isn’t that we’re killjoys and don’t think cars like the E-Tron RS shouldn’t be built. But we do think the whole culture and ethos of this KZbin channel that Robert built is that society should be moving to electric for environmental and ethical reasons and the car manufacturers clearly aren’t quite on the same page yet. No one wants to prevent you from having fun and hooning around in your expensive press cars, but that isn’t quite creating the industrial revolution we’re striving for now is it?

A fair and well-articulated comment. Please believe that I am as frustrated as anyone by the lack of cheap, accessible EVs and I look forward to covering them as/when they arrive. To that end, you'll be pleased to know we did a full ep on the VW ID. Life Concept which debuted at the Munich motor show this week (vid coming later this week) and I'm moving heaven and Earth to get a drive in a Dacia Spring asap. We're very aware of the disproportionate number of high-end EVs we've covered of late. It's more a reflection of the new electric cars are coming out than the new cars we feel are most important - but nonetheless we're working hard to ensure our output is more balanced going forward.

This car costs 140,000 Euros or 140,000 USD before options. I just downloaded the pricelist from the German AUDI website. It is 100 pages long - I kid you not - insane. For fun I tried to make a fully loaded version but ignoring the several pages of options for Audi service connectivity and added warranties. It comes to 50,000 Euros (49,895) it seems (I may have made mistakes - without a consultant it is impossible not to). With delivery charges, one day spent studying the pricelist, one day spent at the dealer you are basically looking at a 200,000 USD car. You can get a fully loaded Tesla Model S Plaid for less than 150,000 and a fully loaded Model S Long Range for less than 110,000. Either one is better, as far as I can judge, by nearly every metric than this AUDI.

Great review, Personally just can’t see why you would buy this Audi over the Porsche, if your in this price bracket, Porsche looks much better, just my opinion( which is right, of course 🤔)

Looks brown to me. Just needs some green blobs to be full military camouflage spec. Shape they couldn't make the door handles flush for better aero efficiency. The Tesla Model S will be more practical (hatchback) and have better range - 405 miles; more space; plus the advantage of the Tesla supercharger network; and faster if you go for the plaid version. Or you could choose the Lucid Air if you don't like the Tesla yolk steering wheel - 517 miles of range; over 1000 horsepower; 0-60 in about 2.5 seconds; Dolby Atmos sound system; vehicle to home bi-directional charging etc. (should be available in the USA in October - rumour has it.

Up for Jack, Up for for Fully Charged. Audi, well. You can make one more super expensive car, and we can wait until one of the Chinese competitors will be here :).
@hankthetank1853 жыл бұрын
I would probably choose the new model S as the interior has had a complete overhaul and looks really nice now and the build quality should be a lot better too, if the model 3 made in China is anything to go by. I also prefer the feeling of space in a car. The Audi looks like your getting into a coffin. I'll never be able to afford any of these cars, nice to dream though. Keep up the good work Jack.
@TassieEV3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with everything you said Jack at the start on the type of comments you are guessing will come out of this. I would love to see you and another journalist take a FC Road Trip in 2 EV GT cars across Europe ensuring you get to 'Gods Racetrack', Italy, as 3 other car journalists have mentioned in another car show. It would be nice to get some real GT cars for you to review eventually and do the NC500 with them.

Audi fanboy here. Right now, I have an S5 Cabriolet. I would buy one of these IF it had decent range. Get the REAL range to 400+ miles, and THEN I will get one.

"officially taking life too seriously" ... love that point as its so true. Plus the early adopters have to pay a premium and the high end are willing to do that and then the tech can become more affordable for the rest of us.

One of the main drivers for manufacturers to make the more expensive EVs is profit margin because these cars make them more money. The people buying these cars are funding the development and build of the budget EVs in the future. The next reason is, I reckon, that there's not enough capacity in the supply chains to take too much volume in EV manufacturing
@TadeuszCantwell3 жыл бұрын
Hands up in the taking life too seriously club. The vast majority of drivers are in economy cars and having alternatives for them will be a much bigger effect on emissions. Anyone else?
@JackScarlett13 жыл бұрын
Without doubt! And we'll be covering the small cheap stuff too, rest assured. We're actually in Munich for the motor show now and have a full vid coming very soon on VW's sub-£20,000 compact EV
@TadeuszCantwell3 жыл бұрын
@@JackScarlett1 It's the man himself. Thanks for the reply, but unlike you I've almost zero interest in cars apart from the tech. The proportion of economy cars to luxury needs to shift really quickly. As other FC shows have said it'll probably take numerous Chinese models to end the slow intro of new models by legacy carmakers who are covering their bottom line as long as possible.
@JackScarlett13 жыл бұрын
@@TadeuszCantwell indeed mate. To take the Munich motor show (where I currently am) as an example): lots of lovely cheap EV concepts on show from Western car makers - all 4 years from production. Meanwhile the Chinese economy cars on show all arrive next year or sooner...

Great video Jack and what a great looking car. I did have aTesla P100D and agree that the interior and finish is just not good enough for the price you pay.
@christianurban3 жыл бұрын
If you use the ev-database range for the Audi, you should also use it for the cars you compare the Audi to. The new Tesla Model S Long Range is listed with 345 miles of real range there. Alternatively just use the WLTP range for both cars. Just don’t mix it.

Errm🤔 Those three Statements you were expecting..,Absolutely Bang On Target!!!! Bloody well sussed 👏👏👏👍 What's a little bit more worrying though is that I'm starting to like your presentations, your pretty good without the lunatic fringe of Robert Exploding in an unnecessary rant about practically sod all. As for the Car, well if Audi can't get it right who the hell can? VW to my mind have already lost the plot but Audi has always been on a different planet anyway and this car is good! Never mind the comparisons to a Porsche, it'll be far cheaper anyway. Thanks for doing the Video.

For me, the Taycan wins this competition easily. This is because the closest that I will ever get to owning any of these is by playing around with their online configurators. The Porsche configurator has like 5000 options for the Taycan. Audi comes in a very distant second place with about 10 options for an e-tron GT, while the Tesla Model S configurator is a potato with about 5 options for the Model S.

I really wish there was NO b-pillar, even if that meant it was a 2+2 coupe. B-Pillar is always an obstruction and doesn't lend to an open feeling. Mercedes S-series coupes come to mind. No b-pillar; you can roll down all four windows. Just feels so free and open.

Flex/weight is what you pay for that aesthetic choice. If you want open, get a convertible and go all in on the sacrifice. Too bad that they don’t make EV convertibles with a sporting bent yet.

Surely at this level, it's not about the car, but about the kind of peers you hang around with. A purchaser would most likely choose a Tesla if they hung around baseball hat geeks waving their iPhones. If it were the Tycan, youd have friends with people that will talk all day about why they didnt buy a Tesla. And for this GT RS, youd make new friends with owners who have this as their second car, comments please on what might be their first car. 👍

The funny thing with these very expensive EV’s is that it’s going to be what makes it possible to make cheaper EV’s. Inventing and designing new technology is very expensive,so if the rich person down the road ends up paying for all these cost through buying these expensive cars. I’m all for it. Since the more they sell of these the sooner cheaper cars with great tech will be available.
