Following up the video where we built the raised garden beds, it's time to fill them and to do so affordably.
Thanks in advance for all the support the channel has gotten so far and we looked forward to bringing more videos as the year goes on.

cardboard then logs then a thin layer of native soil then leaves then (horse stall cleanout year+ old) then garden soil then a single layer cardboard (weed stop) then 1 inch compost on top (acts as mulch and tea 1st year then automatically becomes paart soil next year as cardboard breaks down. Next year another layer of cardboard and compost. Every year soil will get better.

Absolutely. There are a lot of ways to improve soils over time. I've even seen scraps of sheetrock broken up and tilled in to break down overtime.

U should line the bottom of raised beds with chicken wire to keep moles out if that is a issue in your yard.
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors 9 ай бұрын
I had seen that done before but the yard beneath these beds is red clay packed to the point I doubt moles would ever pose a threat. That was the reason for having to make raised beds in the first place.

Lowes have better policy on imperfection bags compared to homedepot. I was told when can just tape the bag

so unreal you guys have a discount on a teared bag... here, home depot (bauhaus, but same) will charge you the full price even if the bag is rugged by a forklift and half of it missin' :D :D

That's a shame. Yeah they're usually half price here when they are damaged. Or like the video I did at Christmas they put some on sale. Really stocked up then.

Where are you located? You mentioned red clay so I was wondering if you’re in Georgia. I’m always on the lookout for tips and tricks to get and keep my raised beds flourishing!

Northeast Georgia Mountains, in Rabun County. In my case the property is pretty much solid clay, but in many videos down in the valley the soils have been worked and improved for decades. It makes a huge difference to add tot he soils yearly.

@@peacefulvalleyoutdoors I’m down in Fulton County. When you dig down a couple feet it’s all clay. But by watching videos like yours, I’m learning what I need to do to have successful raised gardens. Since I live in a subdivision, I’m also limited by space, but have been able to made it work. I know I need to invest more time putting my garden to rest as well as care for it in between seasons. Thanks for your video!

@@pengyou26 That's awesome to hear. Here in a few hours a new video of building our first compost goes up. Adding compost to the beds as well as red clay over time will definitely help break up that red clay.

@@peacefulvalleyoutdoors Thanks! Can't wait to see your new video. I have debated about how to properly compost, since I live in a subdivision. Hopefully I will get some tips and tricks from your video. :)

I never in my life seen a bag of potting mix discounted at any box store in my area (South Carolina). They never have seeds discounted either. I mean never.

This was from the local Wal-Mart here in Clayton. At our Wal-Mart they keep them back behind the garden center. Home Depot has it a lot of the time up beside the register in the garden center, and when in doubt I just ask. As far as seeds, we frequent the Dollar Tree but our larger crops, (tomatoes and peppers) are through the mail.) Lettuce and cold weather crops usually come from the local feed and seed store.

I see potting soil discounted in california all the time and seed packs are literally $1.50 why would you need to save any money i could find that in my couch or under the seat in my car.
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@pilsplease7561 when you can get seed packs discounted here in Georgia for $.25 and potting soil at $2 - $3 a bag vs $7 - $10, you save the money. Saving $3 here and there turns into $100's further down the line that you've saved and if you're doing this as a means to grow what you need rather than relying on going to a supermarket, you save everywhere you can.

@@peacefulvalleyoutdoors The shocking thing is that food costs more out here in california even though we grow at least 80% of all produce thats sold in the US. Its still cheaper to grow your own food.

@@pilsplease7561 cheaper, and I know exactly what has gone into it. No pesticides, no hormones, nothing of the sort. When you grow it yourself you know what you have when you harvest.

If you do your research , one can make richer soil than anything bought in a bag.
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors
@peacefulvalleyoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
Yes, that's very easy too. But I never simply use soil bought in bags. That's why peat moss, compost, sand, and organic matter are all added.
