Sorry I’ve been MIA for the last 3 weeks or so. I’m sure you can imagine, I needed to get Affie at a good point before I could even think about sharing it online. Thanks as always for all the love! 🤍

You’re doing everything right for her, and so many people would have given up long before now. I’ve just had to make the tough decision to let my boy go after 3.5 years of battling his illnesses and injuries and it really is the hardest thing but sometimes the kindest. Keeping fighting and she will let you know if it’s time or if she still wants to keep fighting with you! My other horses also has PSSM 2 so I feel you there too! It’s such a difficult thing to manage and it really is so individual for each horse. But I love how much you are tracking her triggers and adjusting what she needs as you learn more, again no one could ask for more. She’s a very lucky pony, and I have learnt so much from the battles with both of my horses in different ways. Our horses are here to teach us what we need even if we didn’t know we needed it at the time ❤

My mare had a lot of the same issues and in the end she basically got so stressed that she had colic for 3 days straight and she just couldn’t cope with it anymore. I had to make the decision that she wasn’t happy anymore. She was pressing her face against the side of her stable and just wouldn’t move, I spent over 16.5k on her trying to fix her and in the end we just couldn’t do it anymore she was so poorly and just couldn’t cope anymore. She was pts when she was 13 and it broke me but it was what’s best for her. I’m so glad you’re listening to her and taking each day as it comes! You’re an incredible owner!

Ah Han I'm so sorry you're going through all of this. I have a friend who bought a pony with PSSM and he was really underweight and struggling on the yard he was at when they bought him. They had limited turnout with lots of clay mud etc. and he often came out of his stable stiff and struggled to keep weight on despite being on so much food. He now lives out 24/7 and hacks most days and he's gained so much weight and muscle and is looking so happy. Fortunate the sugar in the grass doesn't bother him, but he doesn't get any feed other than the grass these days and has a muzzle on when we think the sugar levels are going to be high. You're 100% doing the right thing figuring what works best for Affie :)

Poor Affie, she’s been going through it! She’s lucky to have you, it’s obvious how much you care for her (your bank account not so much!). She’s so lucky to have you ad her owner, you’re clearly so committed to her wellbeing. It sounds like you have her PSSM management well under control. If you wanted to look further into PSSM management or get another perspective, maybe reach out to Miri Hackett. Her girl, Blondie, has PSSM2 as well and she’s had some great success working with her and managing it so Blondie is as comfortable as possible. If nothing else it might be reassuring being able to speak to someone else going through the same thing.

However (massive however I add) I know thats not a thought right now-maybe in time tho. Im an epileptic, if more people could understand my disability it would be fab. Affie is so lucky to have you! Affie's journey reminds me so much of my OTTB mare. My mare is so spooky and can be so difficult to manage because of her anxiety, but she always tends to randomly injure herself slightly, which holds up the training. I've ruled out so many things for her, but I think for her, most of it is behavior related. But fingers crossed because now she's feeling good and sound, even though she has been a turd lately lol. Fair play for talking about it - so important - and she is very lucky to have you to look after her. My 7 year old Connie has terrible melanoma and is an ongoing project in terms of management. I've always said Affie has been through such a lot, more than most in her little life bless her❤ 🙏🏻 and it definitely takes its toll physically and mentally as it would on us too. I worked with horses for a very long time, and I've seen a lot over those many years. I also own, I've loaned you name it! So I do understand your thought process around letting Affie go to sleep and thinking what would be kinder for her ect, I think it all comes down to quality of life, and if she can do a job or not? if that's a definite no then would she cope just being a field ornament?? obviously, you said she doesn't cope well when shes not in work and she needs to be in a ridden work routine. It's a very tough decision to make cos you love her dearly and you've tried everything. Obviously all you can do now is see what comes from being on this new yard and see what happens whilst shes on the new diet. I really am rooting for her and hopefully this might be the turn around she so desperately needs and also you too ❤

Listening to your story about Affie, reminds me of my mare who has EMS, and she's an ex-broodmare who's 18 now. Diet is so important. Be careful of the type of dewormer you use, really recommend worm count instead of deworming every year. Low sugar diet. Speedi-beet with balancer and especially flax seed oil. I would consult a PSSM equine diet professional to help you. Gentle walking is very important. It took 3 years to rehabilitate my mare, and she is now doing so well. My mare still eats grass, I don't limit her grass, the grass is important as it provides Vit E. She also has Pentosan injections for her arthritis. MSM is fantastic for supporting the joints. My mare needs her lucerne chaff for protein. Himalayan salt is very important. Exercise is very important - but start slowly. I don't limit carrots - as she's completely fine with carrots. You're on the right journey to giving her a good life.
@Nohorsehan
@Nohorsehan 6 ай бұрын
Thank you!!! Yes I do a worm count and she hasn’t had to be wormed for a long while now due to counts coming back fine. Even if she didn’t have problems, wormers aren’t good for there body so would advise against doing it unless you have to cx

Gosh you poor thing, what an emotional roller coaster life has been for you lately, plus I'd imagine a hefty Vets bill!! Han sometimes you have to close out the world and just slip back into your space, think deeply and calmly about your future and your finance's. I'm an active Animal Welfare Activist, who tries to make people responsible for their animals for life especially End of Life, and Han you cannot be faulted on one word you have calmly told us... But remember this bit..... its NOTHING to do with ANYONE but you & yours.... OK?.... I'd rather see a healthy horse PTS than it go into the public world and possibly end up as part of The UK Horse Meat Trade!!! Sadly that's how our Abbatoirs are kept busy because people sell their ponies and horses 😢 I take my hat off to you, because clearly you love Affie, and I genuinely hope it is the love of her that is driving you to keep her going... and not ANY pressure from 'the followers' because I, and I hope I speak for all us that own equines ( I have 8) that you have to do what is right for you, and you alone..... we love your vlogs, that won't change! Your gut instinct, your little voice, your senses, your intuition, your ability to know 'when' is your RIGHT to know when enough is enough ❤ If you're financially able to do what you're doing, then that is one lucky mare. But whether you are or not, there's so many that would benefit from all the love you have for a horse ❤ She clearly has many issues that arent going to improve, and I'm dreadfully sorry she's only a youngster.... I lost a grey mare to cancer at 9yrs old... it felt so wrong but she didn't suffer and your beautiful little ponio isn't suffering because she has hell of a mummy, back up team and enormous amounts of love.... when the time comes Han.... we will catch you....don't ever worry about that not happening..... having animals is sometimes the stupidest thing we do, but doing what's right for THEM is the greatest privilege & feeling in the world ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Sending healing prayers and love to you all ❤❤❤❤❤

By a few minutes into the video I was wondering about PSSM. Perhaps you could reach out to Miri Hackett of Hackett Equine for a collaboration? She's made great progress with her PSSM horse, Blondie. Also, whether, diet, supplements, medicines or lifestyle & exercise, try to only make one change at a time across the board. You're already considering that with the supplements, just bear in mind it's all connected. 😊 Adapting the Cooperative Care training approach for nervous dogs might provide some greater insights into how she is feeling from one moment to the next too. You're so committed and I've subscribed to follow your journey with Affie more closely. ❤

Hang in there Hannah. I know you aren't looking for suggestions but I wonder if your vets have considered SSRIs or anti-anxiety meds? They can really help dogs and cats as well as humans with anxiety. Also, are you adding oils to her food?

Contact STEVE YOUNG Horsemanship… I’m sure he isn’t far from you? He is so great with handling tricky horses…would be a great video as someone new and from a different aspect. I admire how dedicated u are! U will get there with Eff. She will tell u when it’s time but please please talk to Steve Young, you have tried so much already what’s one more thing to the mix.
