Robert and Ned aren't brothers by blood, but they were wards of Jon Arryn together so they were raised as brothers. The Lord Stark Warden of the North just as Jon Arryn was Warden of the East and Hand of the King. Now Ned is being made Hand of the King. Robert was engaged to Ned's sister Lyanna before she died.

Hey hey. I always explain it this way to new reactors. There are 4 major families. Stark - the wolves - they are kind of like the heroes of story - Winterfell is their home - Ned Stark is the head of the family - they have 5 children (Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Rickon) and Jon is the son of Ned and some unnamed woman Baratheon - the deer / stag - that is the King who are friends with Ned - they are very close because the King was supposed to marry Leanna Stark (Ned's sister) but instead he married Cersei Lannister Lannister - the lions - their House is joined with House Baratheon because Cersei is the Queen married to Robert Baratheon the King Targaryan - the dragons - legend has it that Robert Baratheon stole the Thorne from Daenerys (Dany for short) and Viserys (the cruel brother)'s father. So Viserys wants to reclaim the throne (this part confused me in the beginning). Hope it makes sense 👍🏻🖤

I think this is interesting because the reason why the targaryen part is confusing is because most of is told through neds thoughts in books and thrones rarely does flashbacks so you basically have a little less 17 years gap in history. idk with all the storylines if they could have done the full explaining of it without flashbacks to an already overwhelming number of storylines.

(going a little deeper in the backstory) Robert Baratheon rebelled against the Targaryens (who were currently in the throne) because Rhaegar Targaryen (the prince at the time) killed his bride to be, Lyanna Stark. Then all other houses joined the rebellion and they won. Rhaegar was killed in battle by Robert. The Targaryen “Mad” King was killed by Jaime Lannister, who was actually supposed to be the king’s guard (hence why they call him Kingslayer). Then Robert was crowned king and ended up marrying Cersei Lannister, since the Lannisters are the richest House. As for the Mad King’s wife and remaining children (Viserys and Daenerys in her womb), they fled to Essos, which is the nearby country. They’ve lived their entire life in exile, and Viserys Targaryen dreams of returning to Westeros to reclaim his throne.

Robert didn’t steal the throne, he won it by conquest and it’s no legend either. It happened 15-17 years before the start of the story.

It has a feature that whenever a new character or location showed up an icon would appear on screen.. you click icon, show pauses and and a 1 paragraph summary of that person or local pops up.. saved the show for me. Later on in the first series, if you pause during a scene where the character is reading a book you can actually read what they're seeing. Thats how much detail and work was put into this show.
