When you are in NZ, I hope you will drive from Wellington on State Highway 2 to Martinborough in the Wairarapa. The road goes across the Rimutaka Range, and between Upper Hutt and Featherston, it is one of the BEST drives in the world, because it is fast, and you can calculate when there is no oncoming traffic. To make it extra worthwhile, the Martinborough Hotel is a great place to stay for a night. I always try and do the drive early in the morning or late at night, for obvious reasons.
