Just wanted to share with you something I learned only recently when I listened to an interview of Aneesa (sp?), who developed this series. One reason BTS and ARMY's are so tight is in the beginning, when the guys did not have much, ARMY's used to bring them food and clothing at their dorm. When I heard that, a whole lot of stuff became clearer to me.

True. And when BTS gets invited to radio stations in the US, ARMYs would send flowers and cakes/pastries to the radio show as thanks for inviting BTS. The bond between BTS and ARMY is so overwhelming and could not be explained easily. I guess you can say BTS and ARMY grew together.

True. The 7 boys (and other trainees) moved to Seoul (none of them were from there) and lived in the 'dorm' that was provided by the company. They are trained, housed, and fed by BigHit, but the compagny barely survived and was really poor, even to the extent that the guys were doing other jobs like backup dancers or delivery before their debuts. Jin taking stuff from his parent's house for this members to use and taking them to his parent's house to get a decent meal. Hobi's mom having to get jobs to help them out financially. Most if not all of their parents chipping in to keep the rent paid. And OG Army fans were literally sending them food, basic and housold items everyday to help them (as the rice cooker they keep for years !). For their albums, the members themselves did producing and writing from the very beginning of their careers not only because big hit wanted them to have that artistic freedom but also because there wasnt a lot of people that they could afford to bring on. So they did it all themselves, early on in their careers, which is why Big hit is one of the more super loyal companies as the same team they had in the beginning is still the same team they are running with today. They are pretty ride or die. And since Big Hit didn't have money for doing promotion , didn't have connexion with the média and TV show and dont stick the rules of "pay for play" as the big compagnies does, they find their own way to promote themselves, with the active help of Army (they even said one time that armys are like their agents Lol !) Their popularity is a grassroot movment. And all the hardships, bullying, mistreatment and hate BTS and Army together have to face and going threw have made the most strong bond and codépendant relation ever between a band and his fandom .

Interesting fact about Aneesa who is a young, talented professional editor (the creator of The Rise of Bangtan) she has worked on this series for over 4 years! This started out a her way to show her family & friends why she loves BTS so much as well as her way of thanking the guys for how they have helped her through the hard times in her life. She has been an OG KPop fan since early 2010s and started following BTS in pre-debut. BTS has being filming their journey prior to debut. They have so much content to review which Aneesa edited down to be able to tell their stories using their own words! (Instead of trying to try to interpret what they say, she finds the clips which they shared their thoughts at the time.) She has shared that she has only 2 more chapters to finished to complete this labor of love. She never expected this series to have blown up as it has, so the increased pressure of making amazing episodes had taken a toll on her mental health. (That's why she's on a break). Also interesting fact is that Aneesa does not monetize any of the content to ensure the right artists get whatever money of this KZbin series. She also had a brief Patron page using some of the funds to buy the editing and translation software in order to do a better job on these videos. (She has posted on twitter all the remaining Pateron money was donated, via One In An ARMY charity guide, to support ARMY charities under BTS names)! Bravo to Aneese and her volunteer translators, for this series!

The best part about this entire series is that the amazing woman who created it allows the boys to tell their own story using their own words. It's one thing to have ARMY tell you that they struggled early on but to hear them talk about it in a frank, open manner without trying to overly sugarcoat their reality makes their words hit harder. Fun fact time: You've seen one of the most infamous scenes in BTS history about their CEO. "Ayo, Hitman Bang introduces..." is just a snippet but the boys have teased him about this from day 1 and have even gotten their little brother group, Tomorrow by Together (TxT), in on the joke as well. I also think it's really telling about who they are as people because a lot of their staff have been with them since the start - even when they were just a struggling company.

Bighit was in a big scandal due to an old group at the time and barely surviving, they only managed to pay the last lawsuit resulting from this in 2016, for BTS' debut it can be said that Bang PD bet his own life, I remember they even sold most of the company (they bought that back, around mid 2016), because of that they didn't have a lot of money to spend on costumes, most of the clothes you'll see at the awards in episodes 2 and 3 were given away by fans during fan meetings, it was even funny because armys gave away all kinds of things, from clothes to kitchen utensils (even the boys keep most of these things to this day, I remember we recently saw a set of bowls that was given in 2015, in the closet of one of his apartments) a while later Bighit restricted donations to snacks and utensils, then to just letters and some decoration accessories and toys, because the gifts were getting more and more expensive lol.

I like how she shows the diff between big hit giving the boys freedom in their schedules, in their production/writing and all vs the other companies that had strict days and schedules but also doesn’t let their groups have as much input in their content. Also that so much of the series is straight from the boys themselves. 💜💜💜

05:20 BTS were invited by Seo Taiji and Boys for their 20 anniversary concert to perform, they did couple cult classic songs together. Seo Taiji said to BTS: it's your time now. He called them the successors. BTS did remake of their most famous song Come Back home where they rewritten most of the lyrics If you think about it it makes sense: Seo Taiji confronted norms in his time and when BTS debuted their debut song was about "kids non settling for oppressive adults demands and find their own dream" - it was also against the grain of the kpop "norms"

Great reaction. I always say that BTS is a perfect storm. I don’t believe another group will come close to this level of achievement. Here’s why: Instead of looking for the best TALENTS, Bang PD looked for boys who shared his vision. He looked for boys who would buy in to the “music and artist for healing” principle. He also looked for boys who were driven to be the best at their craft. Not boys who need to be told what to do on the daily. Bang PD said he didn’t need to have idol “rules” for the boys. They naturally took it upon themselves to be focused and all in. All 7 of these men do that. That’s why you always see them hype each other up. It’s about the group, not the individual. It’s about the mission. It’s about the music.

I also wanted to clarify that BTS trainee system was quite different from most trainee systems. Like Bang PD said he didn’t force practice and they could attribute as much to their music as they wanted to and they where only asked one things, TO TELL THEIR STORIES. Also the dieting, going out, etc. was not as strict as it was in other groups. In the episode the creators tries to show this. When they are talking about going out and dieting you see BTS eating/snacking and going out. However this didn’t mean they didn’t have rules, it was they just weren’t as harsh and more of rules to help build character, their safety, and/or bond with one another just like we have rules in the home when growing up. (The members also chose how they spent their little fee time) As trainees too it wasn’t so much as a competition feeling or the way they tried to make it feel like for the most part. For example RM encourage everyone to help one another out and tried to bring everyone up with you, etc. So they vibes that one of the members of BP said it being not a happy vibe but for Bighit I believe it was different (at least for BTS) because they where encouraged to help uplift one another while working hard (which I also believe builds team work). Anyways sorry for the long comments. Thanks for reacting!!

Enjoy your reactions. You have a new sub! Aneesa, the creator of Rise of Bangtan, does a fabulous job telling the guy's story. The first few chapters includes some good insights into the idol industry and at the same time demonstrates how BTS operates differently in many aspects. For example not as many rules/restrictions imposed upon the guys and more creative freedom. Back when they debuted in 2013 not many idols had a hand in writing and producing their music. Bts has done both from the beginning. As Bang PD mentioned his requirement was for the guys to tell their own stories. I think this is one thing that set them apart from other groups. There have been a few other groups debuting after BTS that are more involved in the creative process than the traditional idol groups but I don't believe anywhere near the extent BTS is. Not to say other idols don't put in alot of work and effort but the guys along with Bang PD and staff built Big Hit from the ground up. Against all odds they made it to the top and the best part is they did it their way and on their terms much to the chagrin of the Big three labels/entertainment companies. And the icing on the cake...they remain the hard working, humble and all around great human beings they started as. One of many reasons why we support them. I look forward to your chapter two reaction! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Thanks for reacting to the documentary series. I love watching the series again and again with reactors. One thing I want to bring up is their age the members said about themselves in the chapters. Korean age is different than international age. For Koreans you are 1 yr old at birth then your age goes up another year on Jan 1st instead of on your birthday. So for example V the second youngest member, his birthday is Dec 30 so he was 2 yr old when he actually just 2 days old. So during their Vlogs before their debut in this chapter the members were actually very young. Their international age was: RM:18 Jin: 20 Suga: 20 J-Hope: 19 Jimin: 17 V: 17 Jungkook: 15 You always have to deduct 1 or 2 yrs when they talked about their age. Take off 1 yr on their birthday vlogs othwise take off 2 yrs off the age they said.

love this series but i HIGHLY recommend reacting to bts hardships 2013 - 2021 by xceleste and reacting to videos from the channels boracity magazine and bbygangmag these along with the rise of bangtan series will help you learn sooo much. some things arent explored deep enough in this series cause theres so much to it. like their hardships for example theyre discussed throughout the series but not in such deep details to where new people understand enough about what happened. boracity magazine helps break down so many topics like bts vs radio for example shows why bts are not played on radio and really opens your eyes to how corrupt the radio and music industry is in general. bbygangmag has many video essays on many topics but his kpop series is so in depth and really breaks down what lies we were fed as westerners/americans by our media that distorted so much about kpop to the point some people avoid kpop due to those lies/misinformation. please react to them :)

Happy to watch your reaction ! . Aneesa did a good job, she is taking viewer on a journey step-by-step from BTS' perspective not looking back on their days but living through them (with them). She edits their content to allow BTS to speak their thoughts, through their experiences at the time because BTS has been documenting themselves since BEFORE their debut, so there is A LOT of material to edit down to tell their story! She also gives an overview of the KPop history for those who are not familiar with the industry. Amazing work! Besides it being extremely well made, she doesn't try to interpret what "she thinks" BTS is trying to say, she just shows the viewers exactly what they said and shared about what their thoughts were at the time. Rise of Bangtan is the best docu série to discover BTS history. This 1st episode of ROB shows the typical k-pop system and how the labels/industry work, but also, how différent is BTS and Big Hit. Some hints are really subtle, and some new Army fail to noticed them : when it is said idols don't have a lot of creative freedom, you see Namjoon and Yoongi writing lyrics/ when it says idols have phone bans , you see the BTS members on their phones/when idols say they aren't allowed to go outside the dorm, you see Yoongi walking around freely. The série also show the differences between BTS' worries and the other trainees worries. BTS' were worried about their own personal skills (not dancing well enough, song worries, etc), about not getting attention when they debut due to their small company, not having money, while the other trainees seem to be living in fear of being cut from the company at any moment if they make one mistake, worrying about weight quotas, etc. (NB: BTS don't have weight quota, but you often see them doing a diet, before every come-back, to be thiner. It seems to be a very important standard not only for Idols, but for all Korean people, and in a lot of asian culture. ) BTS and Big Hit was différent since the pre début. Bang Si-Hyuk , when he created Big Hit, openly stated he didn't like the system that the Idol industry had created and he wanted to do better. So he choose the boys for their talents and raw potential, not for their face (except Jin, none of them fit the very strict "k pop male beauty standards" , that's why anti attack them so badly for being "ugly (!) or "not a idol face", specially RM and J hope, but also Jimin who suffer from bodyshaming because he was cheeky and not thin enough, poor angel ! ) Big Hit let the boys have control over music, express their opinions, allowed them to talk about issues that many in SK society wouldn't, like mental health, school pressure, disparity in societal classes and so on. This mindset, added to the lack of fund and connections, made them an anomaly in the Kpop Industry. They succeed without any help , and against the system witch try to destroy them (it's a story for another day). They created another way to be successfull, and the most unusual codependant relationship between a group, a compagny and a fandom that had ever exist. The most incredible underdog success story of the whole musical industry ! (sorry for being so LONG ! ) Nota: for the ages, don't forget Korean ages are not international ages. So in january 2013, they have respectively : JK 15 years old, V and Jimin 17, RM and J Hope 18 (turn 19 in February) , Suga 19 (turn 20 in march) and Jin 20. Nota 2 : Predébut history : Rm was the first to be sign by the compagny in 2010. At that time, the project was to made a hip hop group, and the first line up of BTS was only rappers (after the first Big Hit audition) . In 2011, the project was cancelled, and Bang PD decided to create a hip hop Idol group. All the rappers leave, except RM, J Hope and Suga,(now they have to dance, poor RM LOl ) and that lead to the "second hit it audition" announced by Bang PD in the video

Just to clarify a few cultural things from this video. 1. In Korea, your age changes on January 1st, so that everyone that was born the same year as you is considered the same age. Jungkook says he is 16, but by American reconning he is 15 and will not be 16 until September 1st. Same with all the members, except I think J-hope, whose birthday is in February. 2. Hyung, is the Korean word for older brother if you are a male. (Oppa is the word for older brother if you are a female). Hyung, or the more respectful term Hyungnim, can be extended to any older male that is like a brother, and not just biological brothers. Likewise, Oppa can be used by any girl toward an older male who is like a brother or even to an older boyfriend. Which is a little creepy to me, but what do I know, it’s not my culture.

Korean age is a little difficult to understand but they consider you 1 yr old when born and they add another year for the New year I THINK. Maybe someone else can explain better. I enjoyed your reaction and hope you will continue with the series..it's so good and just gets better and better. It would be great if you could also include the deleted scenes and bonus content for the chapters as well..equally well done and equally as important. Chapters 1 & 2 only have deleted scenes and 3-21 have deleted and bonus content. Perhaps you could also make sure to let the chapter play right to the end....a lot of reactors cut it off before the very end and miss some cool covers and B tracks. I appreciate your perspective and will subscribe. Enjoy the ride!!!!

Aneesa did such an outstanding job on this documentary series. She lets Bangtan's own archives, words and history tell their story so it's real and faithful to how they developed. I love that you pause and tell us your thoughts, it shows you are understanding what you are watching and can relate to it on your own level. I think it's part of BTS allure, the fact that every one of us ARMY can relate to them on a personal level. Be it a song lyric, an experience, even just their personal thoughts and feelings. They touch us in ways no other artist ever has and never will again. I subbed already and can't wait to share your journey into getting to know them all. :)

I watched some of this, a long time ago, but really didn't, if you know what I mean. Watching it again with you, seeing and hearing it all, different. From the beginning, the only thing Hitman Bang wanted was their stories in the songs/music, incredible. From the beginning, artistic freedom, for how young they were at that time, it's actually kind of amazing that, that was the only thing being asked of them and look what they did with that. For people that say their relationship is fake or scripted or just because they're around each other so much, they need to watch these from the beginning they were showing and talking with respect about each other, showing gratitude towards the rap line for all the writing/producing. Young and disciplined, for sure. They definitely put in the time and hard work to make their dreams come true, 110%, never anything less! Jimin, larger part of the charm for the team, love it! It kind of surprised me, don't know why, but to see Suga so happy and excited. I know they were all excited about debuting, just don't know why it was a very nice surprise to see Suga so happy and excited. Great to watch with you, seeing things I haven't really seen before, hearing things. Thank you for sharing and I'll come along for the next one.

[~5:20] There is really good short (20 mins) documentary about K-pop in general in Netflix documentary series "Explained" episode name is "K-pop" I really have to advertise that to you. It opens up the K-pop history very well. :D [7:40] Idol group is the correct term. 💜 This industry style started from Japan and they started to call these groups idol groups. (Japanese idol culture is whole another level of meatgrinder - there was time when - I stopped following anything related to it - Japanese idol's career time was half a year! These were usually solo idols - idol groups in Japan and in Korean and in many other Far Eastern countries these days, are still little bit different.) These are not girl bands. These are not boy bands. These are male and female and even some mixed idol groups. These are not pop groups and "K-pop" is not a musical genre, but an entertainments industry. that actually creates also actors (Remember how V - our Tae acted in a historical drama? {I use Tae for him, because one letter gets lost easily in my wall of texts.}), models, and solo artists, as well as groups, some people do everything they are full time in idol group and full time actors (ASTRO's Cha EunWoo) or models (ASTRO's Cha EunWoo & MoonBin) solo artists (RM, Agust D, J-hope) :) * I'm in the boat that rather pause and talk, than talk over the video and you - enybody would! - always miss something while talking about former thing, when the video is rolling onwards. ARMY videos have so much info crammed in them. 💜Pause as much as you want 💜 We are here to hear Your taughts. 💜💜💜 * [10:45] Notice Big Hit's Motto? "Music and Artist for healing" - And that is what they have done. They have literally saved thousands of peoples LIVES. ARMY have written and self published Books where they have collected these stories. 💜 [15:00] Jin was youngest in his family so he was kinda used to be the baby, maknae (=youngest) in his family, but now he had to be the oldest brother of BTS (during trainee times they might have had even older than him, but there is 6 years age difference between Jin and Junkoook!) And Jin had his family closest.. And he was already a university student (for acting!) when he was picked up as a trainee. But JK was in middle school ! [15:41] BTS made Last Christmas cover song about their trainee days Christmas where they sing about how they still have dance practices on Christmas day and same stuff like any other day of their trainee life. (Song's name is Typical Trainee’s Christmas and you can find it's English lyrics for example in Genius) [~16:10] Jimin talking about JK's graduation. Jimin has same age little brother in his real family (who Jimin has often said he has been missing dearly) and he has always taken care of our Kookie like his own little brother. Well they ALL have, always. But apparently for Jimin it was a very good match to treat his own loneliness. 💜 [~7:35] Big Companies are very brutal, because they have endlels material (I'm calling these a meat grinders for reason) where to choose the best. Also girl groups around 2013 tender to be still quite horrible especially in the big companies - Small comapnies Like Big Hit have always had very much more laxed rules - and boys have had also always kinda more laxed rules - boys can date duringtheir trainee times but there have been companies that have literally locked girl trainees into their dorms - also it was normal ALL trainees NOT to have phones because they brought trouble - either the trainees would cry to their parents - or date! Also the stories about slave contracts both in trainee and after debut, were horrifiying, before laws were made to protect idols better - but still they can be bad. things are getting better- And especially Big Hit and HYBE are Huge changing movement trying to get things better in K-pop industry. 💜 Also in the big companies especially the girl idol's treatment has been appalling for long.. The bullying, blackmailing and threathening is horrible and if you get caught breaking the rules or just "being too difficult" your lines might be cut and all in the choreos are suddenly two lined or three and you are back where nobody can see you, and you have two words to sing in the whole song.. Sorry, I have done a Lot of research of how it was, and how it is, and what is the difference of the company size! this is why i can't really step outside Big Hit/HYBE because the K-pop world is very ugly there :=( [20:25] I've heard from older ARMY that J-hope having won national level dance competition was only one who was known to the larger public - and BTS was called "those who are in the group with that Jung HoSeok" but as a hear say this is a rumor and I can't verify it anywhere. As I'm only ARMY of 4 years (almost to the week) - they were just Big internationally and their debut days were far gone. [23:20] diet. the- damn we should talk first about the work culture in k-pop.. Jk talking about his older brothers working till the morning. getting some 2 hours sleep and working all day and night again and getting 2 hours or less sleep .. and before anythig big the culture - is still - that they don't sleep for days before comebacks. * K-pop vocabulary * Comeback means when the promotions start for a new album - without any pause in career - every new album is a comeback. Yeah. Nobody knows why. Well.. Remeber when I mentioned the fast pace of Japanese solo idol culture ? K-pop group kinda has to throw out two albums a year unless you clearly have stopped making music ! The industry is so fast paced, that after a half a year it literally is like a comeback.. *sigh* Training 16 hours a day even as a debuted idol is seen as the "normal" work day. remember the christmas song ? no vacations, not days off, no sick days. Oh you are ill? You will sing until blood pours from your mouth - worst cases this has been case ON STAGE. (Well is it the worst care really if the mistreatment of idol is finally out in the public and not just behind company doors?) And because it is the the whole country's work ethic - not just K-pop industry's :=( And it is not just company officials or managers pushing this to the artists it is also the artists who demand to be stage not to let the team or the fans or the company down. You'll see later in the series BTS members crying because they have a real injury, and they can't go to a stage, or they have to sit down as others dance.. So diets.. The nasty shadow of this industry. see what i said about the idols working themselves to bone because they want it and the competition is so hard that they "have to".. fans who see them live say BTS are TINY not just when thy are drawn as Tiny Tans ( BangTan -> Tannies -> Tans) but in real life. they have told that they don't eat For Days before important shoots or MV shooting (Suga talked about his diet before shooting the Daechwita.. And I don't think we ever stop worrying about Jimin..) - there is video material of some behind the scenes where idols faint during MV shoots. Some of it is demanded by the companies since the beginning.. Some of it is their own imago problems :=( They have been talking again more of their weights in their lives during about a year.. And I'm Not happy :( Again the Why I'm BTS fan.. Big Hit apparently was first company to hire mental health professional/professionals to their staff. to care of their artists. Apparently this have since spread under HYBE umbrella as a important thing to to have. 💜 So many things are way better in HYBE and especially Big Hit that we can proudly say we are ARMY. Not all, yet, but at least they are working not just themselves but to create positive revolution in K-pop as a industry ! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Some of this stuff with expectations of Idols is just so bad a message to send. Big Hit Bang left the big music industry because he hated the way the trainess were treated, so Big Hit groups... well, you'll see the difference. I only listen to Big Hit groups due to the way the others treat these kids. I esp do not our girls to follow K-pop girl groups. I mean... again, as you see, it can be inappropriate.

starting early is fine, but you do NOT have to keep girls so skinny it messes with their health, or stretch them to the point they scream and cry. and keep them locked away , nothing I've ever heard here does that! keeping a healthy weight is important for all. but teach them how, and threats are not the way. it's just gross. I know of no programs in the places I've lived and danced that was like that except a stupid reality show and that teacher got sued.
