Zenana sang and played their own original synth based dance music in clubs, including the Hippodrome, between 1984-8. With the idea of their female friendship and independence at its heart, the group evolved and, for a period, shown here in the TV programme 'City Sounds,', they each chose formidable female figures to represent themselves on stage. Not quite Ginger or Baby, they were quite Sporty and were most definitely Scary, being admired and disliked in equal measure, with one fairly well known record producer finding them ‘far too uppity.’ Group members Penny Griffiths (female buccaneer), Ruth Elder (Cruella De Ville) and Anita Gabrielle (Boudicca) were strongly supported by synthesiser composer/producer Mike Tedder. This upload comes via a video of a video so the quality is compromised, but you get the drift.
