I had cut up some old shirts with the intention of using them as scraps and was so glad I did it just like you without having seen your tutorial!

For fabrics which perhaps have too much drape or stretch to work with easily, a good heavy starch does wonders! It washes out easily unlike interfacing, and is much more affordable. Vano liquid starch can be used straight from the bottle, either sprayed on or by dipping the fabric in and squeezing out excess. Then iron (with a press cloth) to a paper-like stiffness which handles like a dream for fine patchwork! If you hate ironing but have some time, you can also simply soak the fabric in starch then smooth it onto any smooth wall, just like wallpaper. It will dry overnight, then you can remove it with no damage to itself or the wall whatsoever. It may work against a large window to get a smoother appearance. I would not try it (without testing) against a flocked wallpaper, but normal painted walls are fine.

Yes of course. You can use any fabric you want. Just make sure it's stable and doesn't stretch. If it does you can apply a layer of light iron-on interfacing to the back before cutting out the squares.

Mary Carpenter I'm in the UK so don't know if our charity shops are similar to your thrift stores. There are always old blankets available but `I would say that if you're going to put a lot of work into your quilt top, it really is worth getting a proper batting. Blankets and curtain interlining could be used but you won't get the warmth and drape you will get from batting.
