Timelapse - Birth of a Storm

I set up my Nikon D80 for a time-lapse one morning. In the evening, I was pleased to realize that I'd captured the entirety of a storm - from it's formation (Birth) to its resolution.

I learned from watching tornado videos on KZbin that this is called "the cap is lifting." Apparently there is a blanket of cold air over warm air, and this is usually what keeps thunderclouds from forming. But at times the winds below, known as updrafts, get so strong because it gets so warm on the ground that they break through and that's when the cap of cold air lifts and the clouds explode upward. Hence "the cap is lifting."

It’s actually the opposite - the cap is a layer of relatively warm air that prevents surface air from rising past it. The cap ‘breaks’ when the surface air warms up enough that the warm air above isn’t enough to stop it rising and forming a thunderstorm cloud.

How does forecasters know that clouds and thunderstorms will form in that place? Amazing timelapse

Well, the forecaster was me I guess... This forecaster had watched a similar storm come along almost every day that week. It seemed to coalesce along that mountain range every time. Perhaps because of how the valley is shaped and the prevailing winds. In summary - an educated guess coupled with luck.
