Living in Little Roc k AR now; watching this reminds me how much I miss living 3 to 4 blocks away from Biscayne bay (Miami FL), carrying my 12' fiberglass canoe I use to own (this is 30 + years ago) to the bay and paddling out to one of the islands :-/ If I ever get around to building my own S.O.F. kayak (after finishing the "honey dos" there's a large stream not too far from my house that might do nicely.

Not at all, skin on frame is ridiculously forgiving by boat building standards, build time ends up being about 50 hours. If you check out the student builds blog on our website we just had a 13-year-old girl complete one of these completely by herself.

Your canoe is real pretty, that's top notch craftsmanship. I'd be scared to put a hole in it when I'm days into the back country...

Check out the video that I uploaded called skin on frame durability. I go into a ton of detail about this but the cliff notes are. It’s not indestructible by any means but has an equivalent durability to any other type of boat the same weight. And you can always put on a heavier skin for more durability. I lost a tandem in a nasty surf landing about 10 years ago and it flushed around the corner and into a cliff lined rock Cove. The kayak rolled up and down the rocks in the surf for an entire tide cycle until we could get to it. There were no punctures in the skin and only one broken rib. Although everything made of metal on deck including my fishing reels and the rudder was obliterated. In that same video I show what happened to a skin last summer when myself and my girlfriend got high centered on a piece of submerged rebar in the canoe.

Can you tell me the length and beam and (most importantly to me) the finished weight of the kayak you built in this video. Thank you.
@ivogarza93394 жыл бұрын
@@jaydeer6367 there are east and west Greenland plans, f1 and long pointy boat plans, canoe plans and hopefully coming soon a river kayak with what looks like leanings toward a northern Alaska style. The kayak shown appears to be the f1 which is the sea kayak with good surfing characteristics. The plans change the dimensions to tailor the kayak to you. The weight is between 24 and 30 pounds. I am 240 # which was about the largest size and the finished boat with lines was just at 29 pounds. The length is between 13' - 3" and 14' - 3". The beam is 22 to 26", the waterline is narrower. This is the quickest boat I have ever paddled. The Greenland boats will be narrower. There is a stretched version (LPB) that is longer, if you are a sprinter not a normal tourer. The f1 works well for me on inland seas, lakes and mild rivers. It was designed for the ocean coastline, but those are a ways from here. Go on over to the cape falcon kayak site and poke around.

@capefalconkayak3 жыл бұрын
I think you’d be surprised. It’s not bulletproof like a plastic kayak, But it will bounce off of things that would put a hole in a Carbon, Kevlar or fiberglass boat. A few years back we lost a tandem in the surf and it washed around the corner into a cliff lined cove, where full of water it washed up and down a rock slope through 2 tide cycles before I could get down to get it. One cracked rib and no skin punctures. So pretty good for something that weighs about 30 pounds. If you check out the channel here I’ve got a video on the skin on frame durability where I have a picture of my friends truck that he rolled over his boats. Couple broken deck beams but still no skin punctures. That one kind of blew my mind because the truck was totaled, sure it had something to do with how he rolled though. You can see the shape of the boat where it smashed in the windshield and the top of the cab.
