I've been binging this show, amazing I didn't know about it before since it ran some 20 years and I am an anthropologist (albeit an American one). Loving the entire thing, but one of the funniest thing is watching Tony grow in both knowledge and cynicism, but the archeology teams (mainly Mick, Carenza, Phil and Raksha) remaining so enthusiastic. I was forensics, but spent a lot of time hanging out with archeologists and can verify that they chatter about their field like a kid about their favorite TV show, can drink like lords, and can focus on the tiniest detail of their finds while completely ignoring their house burning down around them...

Curiosity time. Isn't all anthropology forensic in nature?
@ladygrndr9424
@ladygrndr9424 3 жыл бұрын
@@joshschneider9766 I'm an American, so no, most Anthropology is not forensic, or related to solving crimes. We have 4 branches here: Cultural, Archeological, Linguistic and Biological. Cultural studies how people in other parts of the world live and behave every day. Archeology is looking at the cultures of past people. Linguistic is exploring the evolution of languages around the globe. Biological is looking at everything from the evolution of hominids, to the intersection of culture and health today. Forensic anthropology is a subsection of biological anthropology, with a smidgen of Archeology :)

I'm really glad y'all posted this. I need a little history to help me calm down. Right now there is a massive fire that started just 100 feet from my house. The winds are reaching as high as 45mph. Thank goodness it's blowing away from my house, but it's blowing towards other towns. It has already reached the two towns noth of me, and is heading towards our area's "big city". Everyone is terrified. We are in Oregon, so we don't get all the funding or support that California and Washington get. Currently an entire town is being evacuated. None of the major news organizations are covering this. We need help! Please tell people to look up the Alameda Road Fire. We live in a poor county. There is no way we can come back from this. Update!! All of Talent, Phoenix, most of Medford (except for the northwest corner), and now Central Point have been destroyed. Winds are still high, but hopefully the added humidity of the night will help slow the fire. Update 2!! Ashland and Talent fires are out, but Phoenix and South Medford are still going, albeit at a slower rate, and in smaller patches. High winds persist, and a fire north of us in Shady Cove/ Rogue River has erupted. They are now in level 3 evacuation, meaning "no time to pack, just GO, NOW!!". The winds are supposed to slow down later this afternoon which will helps put out/contain the fires. Update 3!!! So far they have confirmed 600 houses gone, 100 businesses, and 3 deathes. There are likely many more deaths to be confirmed. We don't know how many people are missing yet. Many people chose not to evacuate. FEMA has approved emergency funding for 4 of our fires: Alameda fire, Jackson County (my fire); Holiday Farm fire, Lane County; PowerLine fire, Washington County; and Echo Mountain fire, Lincoln County. The Obenchain fire is still raging just north of us. Eagle Point, Trail, and Rogue River are under level 3 evacuation. My husband is currently out helping evacuate people from these towns. Air quality in Ashland is extremely poor. We're doing our best to keep smoke out and filter the air, but there's not a whole lot we can do.

According to the town of Groby's own website, the White Queen never lived at Groby Old Hall. Furthermore, The Grey family never inhabited the archaeology excavated in this episode. It was the de Ferrers family that inhabited the old manor house, not the Greys. The only thing the Greys (who only inherited the property through marriage) had to do with the manor house is that they destroyed it, then built the brick building that's barely even mentioned. This is all confirmed by simply looking at the family tree shown a few times in this episode, and comparing it with the dates attributed to the ruins by the professional archaeologists. The historical information provided by the so-called "expert" (the historical fiction author), is flat-out incorrect. She rewrote history (for which she is notorious) in order to promote her upcoming fiction novel featuring the White Queen, and no one on the production team bothered to confirm her made-up research. This (along with similar issues in the final years) is why Mick Aston left Time Team.

I am descended directly from Edward II as well as Fair Rosamund. This means we are cousins as well. My Scots-Irish-Welsh-English-Norman roots are well documented. My grandmother was born to Quakers and on this side of the pond my roots through her family go back to 1608 and the first child born at Janestowne to have descendants. On my mother's side I'm second sailing of the Mayflower. I also have at LEAST 2 to 3 Native American communities and the first territorial Governor of the Minnesota Territory (Andrew Ramsay) was a great-uncle. On that side we had men who went into Lakota territory as single men and came back years later with a wife and children. There also were women on both sides who had a surname of "leaf" or "fern". My hubby has Cherokee via his mother and may actually be cousins with my uncle by marriage who also is part Cherokee and has the same last name as my MIL's maiden name. So ... hello cousins.

Austin and my Uncle Randolph Foster was his Chief Lead Scout . This is just from my mother's side . Now my father's side is a Clooney from Co. BBC has the exclusive license for UK broadcasting. It's standard contract withem. They are a national monopoly that's state sanctioned and sponsored after all.

You wanna broadcast on BBC you agree to them owning all rights in the uk or they deny you permission. Simple as that. something about being the enforcers of the official secrets act and what not

The inclusion of Philippa Gregory as some sort of expert really makes me second guess every bit of information I've ever learned from one of these documentaries.

I figure they bring her in just to bump ratings and otherwise have the sense to ignore her and let the archaeology speak for itself. Because there is no way everyone on that site didn't nearly have their eyes roll out of their heads when she showed up xD

@@kittenclaws5775 That's what I figure too, and I assume they had real researchers giving her lines/making sure she wasn't spewing her usual nonsense. Just annoying then to pretend she's a real researcher with any credit.

@@beemily13 Absolutely agreed. The worst thing is that having read her, she has CLEARLY done the research, she just *chooses* to lie through her teeth. Like, hey, I love Fan Fic, too, but I don't insist on teaching it as canon.
@BobbyLCollins

Agreed. Everything she says in this episode is flat-out wrong. According to the Town of Groby's own website, the White Queen never even lived at Groby Old Hall, but rather at Bradgate. If you look closely at the de Ferrers family tree and compare it with the dates the archaeologists attribute to the ruins, you'll find that the only thing the Greys had to do with the archaeology featured in this episode is that they destroyed it and built the brick building that is barely even mentioned at all. This should have been an episode about the de Ferrers dynasty living at Groby, but because a charlatan historical fiction writer was trying to sell a book about a woman who was queen for less than a fortnight, she literally rewrote history, and no one bothered to check its accuracy. This is a prime example of why Mick Aston left the show.

Basically repair sections distributing the weight. Same principle as an arch just in a flat vertical face rather than for a horizontal wall.

It's also why you are banded layers of stone or brick in towers. Those are called leveling courses and the leveling is to ensure even distribution of down and outward forces.
@joshschneider9766
@joshschneider9766 3 жыл бұрын
if you look closely at many medieval structures you will also see holes in those leveling courses. That's where the scaffolding was put in as the structure rose and they were markers for how plumb they were as they rose.

Uh no they belong to the British public. They are tangible relics of national importance. That's why the position of county archaeologist exists and each have extensive staffs. Such as Helen geake at the time this was recorded. Or Cardenas who was an employee of the national version. There's very strict laws governing that. Finds belong to the nation not the property owners.

History Hits does NOT have "hundreds" of recorded stuff about history. They have plenty of recorded live-streams but I would prefer to see DOCUMENTARIES about history instead of this character talking for 1.5 to 2.5 hours ABOUT the history with "experts". I don't want to see CONCLUSIONS about history, I can draw those for myself about history based on facts. History Hits TV is for those who want and need their history info pre-digested. I've had more than enough of pre-digested history via high school and university. I don't need it as an adult.

Not as long as cousins remain. Those of us via John of Gaunt and Katherine Swinford retain that familial heritage. I am descended through that line (along with other Plantagenet lines). My last name may not be Grey ... but one of my ancestors on my dad's side was named Robert Grey and lived in Massachusetts in Colonial times.
