When you visit Knossos you get a sense that it’s just all new concrete and an interpretation of how it was. There are few items that looks original like some storage jars/wine urns scattered around. All the ‘frescos’ look odd as there might be just couple of original pieces but the whole image have been miraculously created around them.

The "restorations" by Sir Arthur Evans have been controversial ever since he began them in the 1920s. Some of the motivation was conservation after water damage to the newly excavated site and quite a bit to capture public interest to secure funding for further excavations. The frescos at Knossos are just copies of the originals reconstructed from the remaining paint chips on the plaster walls, with lots of imagination and guesswork. Arthur Evans was a good archeologist for the time but very personally engaged with the romance of this new civilisation and that carried over into his theories of culture abd architecture.

The big question about the disc: why was the inscription created with stamps? Are there other specimens of stamped writing from the Minoan period? If not, why would a forger go to the trouble of creating stamps, instead of inscribing directly on the clay, in the manner of surviving tablets?

As long as it remains in Greece we will never know. Their tourism industry and prestige as a destination for archaeologists and historians hinges on their artifacts being unquestionably authentic and important. The Greek govt is corrupt and desperate enough that I have no doubt they would cover up any evidence that these major artifacts were forgeries. Fwiw I saw the disk in person at Heraklion and the museum is actually quite lovely. But we should not be blind to the fact that a lot of these “mysterious” objects have been forgeries - especially those from periods when providence was not meticulously documented
