NYE 12/31/1955, A glitch developed as the ball dropped down the pole, as it blinked and the power went out. After partially fixing the trouble, they got the ball down the pole without the lights, lighting the 1956 sign 15 minutes later.

Before we get to the ball drop. The first new years eve in times square occurred on December 31st 1904. There was fireworks back then. But then in 1907, a man decided to ban fireworks. Then someone thought of a dropping ball on top of one times square, so he did just that and the first ball drop occurred on December 31st 1907 and the ball slowly went down the flagpole, and when it got to the bottom, 1908 arrived.
