Tips: 1. Use jewelry screwdrivers, they're small enough for the battery cover screws. 2. Use a sewing needle to pry off the battery holder clip. 3. When new battery is installed and the battery holder clip is back on, you must "short pads to reset" as shown on the label. These two "pads" are the two adjacent circles located at about 7:00 of the watch in the video; the label's arrow is pointing at them. They are between the two springs sticking out; the springs are shown in the video at about 9:00 and 6:30. To short them, I use a small jewelry screwdriver (slot, not Phillips) to touch the screwdriver blade to both circles simultaneously for a few seconds. When you remove the screwdriver the display will go blank then will cycle through a bunch of stuff then settle on the time at 12:00, ready to set to the correct time. 4. The beep/chime will not work if the back cover is put on wrong. 3:47 shows cover being put on correctly; note the orientation of that circular thing on the cover.

Thank you for a clear straightforward tutorial. The tough part was getting the clip holding the battery to release. I still don’t understand how the mechanism works; but I managed to get it free and then reclip it more or less by accident, or at least trial and error. The watch is reset and running smoothly, and I hope still waterproof. The fix requires some patience and is about at the limits of my eyesight, even with cheaters. The tiny screws are also at the limit of handling with my mitts. I actually thought of asking my wife with her delicate hands to take over for the screws.

Love the Ironman watches. They take a beating and work forever. I saw one of these models at Walmart marked down to $2, new, in box, because it had a fading display (push the Indiglo button and the display would disappear for a few seconds). So I bought it, watched your video and learned about the pin to unlatch the battery holder (Thanks! My other Ironman is older and has a completely different holder that doesn't need a pin to release it). Now I have another completely working one that I can wear with my "dress flannels".

Regarding 4:12 tightening the screws, the screws should be tightened in a diagonal pattern rather than in a circular pattern. Tightening in a diagonal pattern ensures that the waterproof O-ring gasket receives even pressure whereas tightening in a circular pattern can cause lopsided pressure and thus potential leakage of moisture into the chamber. Tightening in a diagonal pattern is standard procedure for flange assembly as well as mounting lug nuts onto the wheel of a car.

Regarding 2:26 instead of using a slant tip tweezer, I found that it is better to use a curved hook tip tweezer which can lift off the battery. A curved hook tip tweezer can also lift off the O-ring gasket for cleaning. I clean off the debris around the O-ring as well as the debris which has accumulated underneath the watch back. Also a curved hook tip tweezer is better for holding the tiny screws to position them into their screws holes.

Ha! Yes, I’ve flung those tiny screws too. Ironically, it happens because I’m squeezing the tweezers too hard… because I’m afraid to lose the screw… and then I hear it ricochet and I have to get out a magnet to find it. Thank you so much for this video! The closeup views were worth a million for these 53 year old eyes. My Indiglo function still doesn't work, but at least everything else works on this old watch of mine.

Ha! I hear you! My eyes have the same issues with small print and tiny things… and my eyes are the same age as yours. 😁

perfect! I was able to replace the battery in about 3 minutes - including the minute spent trying to pick up the little screws I kept dropping ;)
@BruceAlanR4 жыл бұрын
Nice job! Dropping the screws can definitely be an issue. Before I started changing the batteries myself I’d take my Ironman Classic to a jeweler. One day the jeweler was chatting with me while changing the battery and dropped a screw on the floor. He couldn’t find it so he replaced it with the wrong size screw... which eventually fell out. He also removed the gasket and never replaced it. So... to make a long story short, that’s why I started changing batteries myself. Ha!

Great video. Helped me replace the battery. Once part I noticed is (missing?) I had to short the pads to restart the watch. Other than that this video is perfect for a DIY battery replacement. Thanks!
@BruceAlanR6 ай бұрын
Thank you for pointing that out. In all of my battery replacements, I’ve never had to short the pads. For anyone looking to do it, you can refer to my other video: How to Short Pads To Reset Timex Ironman Triathlon after Battery Insertion kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX_RqYanhpmbgLs 😃👍

wow!!! good video. How lame is Timex that it now requires instructions to open watch and get to the battery. It originally required a single watch makers Philips screw driver. Oh NO! gotta find a pin from a dress shirt and a small flat head to make sure the cell clip snapped into place. It is like other customer service - various levels of crap. Thank you very much for the video. It would have been hours figuring out the clip design.
@BruceAlanR3 жыл бұрын
I agree. What’s also lame is I haven’t been able to figure out the size of the gasket in order to replace it. Eventually the gasket will stretch and dry out to the point that the watch will leak. Be sure to use silicon lube and keep the gasket hydrated.

Good video. I knew there was something with the latch that I was going to get lucky and figure out or break if I didn't have a video. And I guess the title does include "and set time" but if you've owned the watch long enough to go through a battery then you probably also know how to set the watch. Finally, you should note at the beginning of the video to look at the seal as you take the back cover off so you are sure how it goes back in.

Thank you for the feedback. This video was the first video I did for this watch and I was reluctant to take it down based on how popular it is. I have since added separate videos for: Setting time, date, and using the functions kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ64gJqtarCIf7c Changing the battery kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4CQh4ypbaaDidU and Resetting the watch kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX_RqYanhpmbgLs In the latest video, I discuss the rubber gasket as well as testing that the buttons make proper contact. Thanks again!

Thanks for the video mine has a battery strapped it just goes right across the battery instead of a circular metal piece like you showed. I had better luck just unscrewing the opposite side where there’s a very small screw securing that side. I could not get the latch to release and was afraid it would break. Unscrewing the screw allowed the latch to come right off and easily access the battery. Thanks for the video!!

Another tip I found very helpful on my battery replacement. Take the old o-ring and put some silicon grease on it and also in the channel it goes in. Use a tooth pick to assist dabbing it alone the channel. This will also assist keeping it in its place when back cover is put back on. Hopefully this will help improve the water resistance as well. Next, using a toothpick fill the display with a millimeter of mineral spirits. Gently rub with the toothpick that irritating iron man decal that takes up display space for no reason. After 5 minutes of gently going back and forth over that area the decal will disappear. Clean window when complete. Lastly put a very small drop of silicone in each hole where the buttons go through. You can see a small metal circle where you put the drop. Exercise the button after this. Be careful not to get any of the liquid on the clear plastic display lense. Carefully wipe off all excess once exercised. This alone made my 5 buttons so smooth! Totally happy with my refurbished Timex. Thanks again!
