This is way too complicated, but a very good analysis for JD two cylinder timing. I followed the magneto timing instructions in the Deere owners manual and that was much easier. There are punch marks located on the flywheel and engine/transmission case that locate the TDC mark of the crankshaft. If you install the magneto at the correct spot with the governor shaft in the proper position, there is not a need for anything else to be adjusted. I do not own a timing light, and my 1942 JD model B (Hand start!) runs like it should. These tractors were built for farmers that worked on their own equipment. The governor will either retard or advance the magneto timing as required for proper operation of the engine.

So you time these set at 20 to 30 at low idle? I have mine set at 30 degrees at wide open throttle. I have a timing light with a dial on the back for the degrees.

I wish I could help, but I really don’t know anymore than what I put in to these videos. Check my other videos for timing a John Deere. I think I have a total of three videos for timing John Deere tractors.
