this is a bit long as it's more like game theory rather than a comment :p it's a bit of how to beat sicilians and when are sicilians srong as well as how they need to be buffed imo. but i hope it's useful! as a general rule, sicilians are weak but if you play to their strength you will lose. examples: 1- unless you have stronger pikes "aka japanese and bohemians" you can't really counter sicilian cavs with spears. in fuedal age sicilian scout can take 4-5 hits from a spear and can generally win 1 vs 1. generally speaking, however, sicilian knights will lose to any knight civ as they don't bring anything special to the table in knight vs knight matchup. 2- sicilian skirms are far stronger than generic skirms of other civs, by that same logic, and their archers are better vs skirms than other archers too. once again , sicilian skrims loses to any other skirm civ "discount/buffed" and thus they lose in such a case. 3- sicilians spears are more resilliant vs skirms and so and again an mirror compisition fuedal or castle play in this case will favor sicilians. same as previous rule, if your civ is specialized with archers/skirms you can your army is stronger than sicilians. the above examples are in some sense helpful to understand the game through "as in thinking about unit matchups for every civ" as a general rule, sicilians lose to civs if they play around their civ strength. meaning a strong knight civ going knighs will probably beat sicilians, a strong skirm archer civ going skirms archers will probably beat sicilians... and so on. which is the primary reason sicilians are weak imo. now one might wonder why are sicilians weak? for me it came down for a few reasons of which i thought of. 1- sicilians skirms lacking final armor means in imperial age their skirms completely lose their edge and they will be bad counter for archers. they can still deal with generic skirms, but not archers or pierce in general. in magyars vs sicilians. magyars FU CA does 4 damage to generic FU skirm but 6 to sicilians. so they have literally zero counters to magyars CA. 2- sicilian eco bonus comes with big issues. you can think of sicilians bonus as a teutons bonus with delayed discount rather than upfront both are effectively close in value in terms of wood saved. but one comes up front and one comes late. because of that, sicilians are forced to get horse collar for their eco bonus other wise they play as if htey have no bonus, and so not only do they have delayed discount, but also an upfront mandatory cost. a simple buff for sicilians could be to give them horse collar for free, and they can actually take away crop rotation from them because it does not do anything for sicilians technically. 3 in part this includes point number one. but sicilians skirms/archers lacking final armor, as well as their knight line lacking paladin. means their 33% less bonus damage taken actually does not make any of their units superior to any FU unit. in other words in imperial age if you take out the 33% bonus damage for sicilians and give hem FU units, they will be better off. as their cavaliers do worse than FU paladins vs helbs, their archers do worse than any other archers vs skirms / archers, their skirms are the same... etc. for that reason i think their civ bonus should scale based on age. solutions for sicilians imo, 1-as i said above give them horse collar upgrade for free, trade it off with crop rotation. 2- change their less bonus damage taken nio a scaling value. so 33% castle, 50% imperial. this is because if their cavaliers can't even beat helbs then their bonus is useless. but their knights beat pikemen so you can't make their knights stronger than they already are. that said their skirms lacking final armor will still be an issue and you can't give them final armor because their archers will be op. so even with such buffs i can't see them winning vs pure paladin/archer/CA civs easily.
