I got to know Eddie pretty well when he was in Curved Air with my best friend Mike Wedgwood. We even recorded a version of "Let It Be" for fun after a CA gig at the Rainbow in London! Such a lovely guy and only 17 when he recorded Air Cut with CA. Saw this band in London and found myself sitting next to Mike Paxman of Judie Tzuke fame. What an incredible night. How good is this playing, from everybody?

This is much more mellow and jazzy than the performances of subsequent years. I love the way Frank allowed each band to re-invent his tunes.

Frank wasn't mainstream, so I think that's why. He was more of a musicians, musician. Great, but not in it for the money. He was a true artist. He mentored and made musicians famous, once they left his band. I saw him 5 times in Chicago in the 70's with friends. Always a great time.

Frank was a 'Musician's Musician'. Most of his musical constructions are brilliant with a lyrical bent towards the absurdities of our reality with a some funny, yet true insights into life. He wrote and wrote then wrote some more. Then he would rearrange the pieces as not to get bored. Everyone surely is entitled to each others choice of music on whatever level. As for me, Frank Zappa gets my vote on the highest level. He's a hard act to follow!

I've noticed a lot of comments below about Zappa not being mentioned, or featured; when a documentary about the '60's comes on. And how come you never hear his music on "classic radio" stations? And when a film comes out that takes place in the '60's, you can bet your bottom dollar it will feature "White Rabbit", "All Along the Watchtower", and "Born to Be Wild" in the soundtrack-but never Zappa...or Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, or Captain Beefheart, for that matter.

Eddie is incredible he is so underrated!!!!! I think that Frank gave him a lot of crap ; just messing with him all the time it was harmless fun. Frank had fun with everybody. Eddie was with Roxy Music David Bowie and UK I think he even did some stuff with Eno and Fripp. But Zappa new how incredible he was. Their solos together is some of the coolest in the Zappa era. I love that lineup.
@triplettam15 жыл бұрын
@loislombardo Okay. The people who come here and seek out his music and comment are probably not who I'm talking about. but her's what I mean. Frank is hardly ever played on the radio. And when I go to friends houses who have his music, they generally don't play it because Frank's music command attention. Consequently, he's not part of the playlist of our collective minds. So, when discussions are had about the greatest bands of all time, his name rarely comes up. Go to 2nd part of reply below.

Yeah, Jobson bailed after a short time to form 'UK' with Holdsworth, Bruford & Wetton. Most musicians, including Bozzio, were 'let go' from Zappa's band when Frank chose to make the change, very few players left of their own accord. But there can't have been any hard feelings 'cos I read that Frank showed up at the studio playback of the first 'UK' album in London.
@narozzz14 жыл бұрын
@timmo1782 - "It's not often you hear Frank solo in this style." Wow, you're not kidding. There's an almost Kind of Blue - type of feel to his playing here. It so quietly, introspectively emotive. Normally I'm one of those musically illiterate bastards who thinks the MOI records are his greatest achievements. Yet I could listen to "Aja" all day and night. Funny how that works......

@loislombardo Frank should always be near the top. I'll be honest with you. I'm guilty of it. All my records are in storage; I just have a couple CDs packed in a closet and Zappa plays Zappa. I was looking up UK and Eddie Jobson and this song was recommended. I had never heard it, but I remember thinking: " I always forget how damn good Frank was." I know not everybody overlooks him, certainly not you and I'm glad about that. But he belongs on jukeboxes and radios so that everyone can hear him.

@loislombardo Well, my friend, you are in a minority. His kind of music, as you know, wasn't just kind of good or catchy. It was brilliant. He was a classical composer. He wrote out all the parts for every instrument and came up with concepts that even I or my friends don't fully understand. I just picked 2025 because that's when I felt our obsession with drum machines and image and minimalism will end and somebody might just look back and see what great artist could have been overlooked. SC
@triplettam14 жыл бұрын
@zappalaney Just a bit of hyperbole there, friend. What I meant was that in 2025--or years in the future from when he recorded--society in general will catch up to his genius, like they did with, oh, Van Gogh or others. I mean he has a huge fan base, but except for them, he's never included in the conversation of the "greatest." But then I see what's on MTV these days and say: "Nah. We're just lucky to have gotten to know him at all." Slainte.
