I had a talk with Uli when he was in Facebook...the Master of the rings sound was great, because it was recorded in a really expensive studio and was also using thick skins, Remo Pinstripes on all drums, so the recording was smooth and velvet...than he used Remo CS at the beginning of downloading of albums era..and they used cheeper studios...he want to try different sound but was not satisfied with Time of the oath and better than raw drum sound...therefore later he was using triggers for recording in a Masterplan era and was more focusing on songwriting...this is the thing he told me in a conversation...because like a drummer I was curious about his drum configuration ;-)

What a beast of a drummer Uli Was, really creative and his hitting was heavy as hell, i get vibes of John Bonham and Alex van Halen when i listen to him. I rank him in my top 5 metal drummers along with Portnoy, Mangini , Gene Hoghlan and Aquiles Priester.

I know exactly what you mean about Better Than Raw's production. Big, organic with just the right amount of grit, and heavy as fuck. The Dark Ride felt too clean and smaller by comparison.
