Unfortunately, Timothy Olyphant didn't do a great job of breaking it down, but the backstory of Captain Japan is really explained much better in the comics. The Japanese girlfriend and the nuclear reactor part is not strictly canon, he must have been talking about a Multiverse version of Captain Japan.
