Not ideal, works in a pinch if you need to do it by ear and quickly. Using a drum dial will never steer you wrong.

In my experience some drums can utilize the drum dial, but it's never perfect. I've always trusted my ear more than a drum dial, but I could easily be in the minority in that respect. It's kind of like using tuning gauges: trust the ear if it's trained, but the gauge is still very useful and helpful to someone with less training/practice. (Hopefully none of this comes across as offensive!) Thanks for your comment!

Plastic head notes are still a bit bouncy, :$

If you watch the full video, we ended up continuing to make some adjustments right after that initial hit. Agreed, bouncy, but also terrible mic placement on my part! Thanks for watching.

@@DKPercussion I'll take a look to the full video. I meant bouncy in regards to plastic compared to kalf. thanks for sharing this info!

Would the channel system work much differently with a drum with only 6 tension rods?

I feel like the best way to describe a 6 lug “sound” versus an 8, is more “broad,” and less precise. It’s harder to control what would be the secondary with only two lugs. In theory you could apply this idea, but I’ve never really had much luck. I usually use an averaging system with 6 lugs. (Light hits in the lug region will activate only that lug, then compare to a forte hit, which is the entire head - make the quiet pitch match the average… perhaps another short video is in order!)
