Thanks for showing the budget friendly tools for those of us who maybe only make one guitar. I actually 3d printed some tools when I made mine, such as the fret pressing caul, radius gauges, shaped sanding blocks etc. I think a 3d printer might be more accessible for many due to its price, but also because it makes less noise and emissions than a CNC router or a laser cutter.

3d printers are great, slow but affordable way to make custom things, especially if using PLA so it's not as terrible for the environment.

I think one of the biggest hurdles for building a neck is all the speciality tools we're told we need. Thanks for showing that it can be done frugally as well.

Wait til you have all the tools. The real hurdle is doing the fret job well. Any ass can hammer metal into the slot, making the ends nice and crowning and polishing is where the real challenge is at

@@TimTrOn3000 True! It takes a fair bit of practice to get it just right.

yea, we haven't gotten to the real hard part of the frets yet, lol. The tools help, but it can be done without them. Future video will get in to that.

Terrific work on making those guitar necks Tim! I remember doing all of this ages ago. It was quite a learning curve and was all accomplished by reading books and hands on practice. Keep up the great work and best of luck with sales! 👍👍🎸🎸

Yknow, I think a lot about this. With the tech we have, why should I make something from local trees then ship it to another part of the world? Compare that footprint to me emailing the gcode, perhaps even "driving" the cnc remotely from here while my design gets made from wod local to the client... There are proprietary concerns, of course, but a network of people like this could take several cargo freighters off the ocean?
@markgordon4368

@tim sway like a collaboration with local guitar builders or wood workers to produce Tim Sway products eliminating the carbon footprint, sending your guitar "seed" to remote cncs, even making guitars out of old British doors (or French if you lean thst way) building a world wide guitar empire so every guitarist can have a virtual eco friendly Tim brand guitsr🤔

Thanks for the secret cheaper tool tips! Will come in handy on my next project for sure. I wouldn't wanna put the frets in first so I can use a big radius block to clamp the fretboard, like Lignum showed it a bunch of times on their channel. Always interesting to see different processes though
@timsway
@timsway Жыл бұрын
That is a good way to do it, but the reason I prefer my method over rubber bands and fill clamps is if there is a problem, a small discrepancy, etc, I can see it and fix it before the glue settles. If something is misaligned or not grabbing properly under the full clamp and a winding of elastic, you won’t see it or know until it’s too late.

Another great video, thanks for putting that together. A good non-expensive way to clamp the fretboard on is to use an old bike tube. Clamp fretboard in place on both ends with a tube clamped under one end, tightly wrap the tube around the neck, when you get to the other end remove the clamp and put the end of the tube under it. Great even pressure all along the fretboard.
@timsway
@timsway Жыл бұрын
that is a good one. I tried using exercise bands a few times. I have some giant rubber bands made for this sort of thing but I still refer these band clamps.
@johnisch88

@@timsway every time I see you using those clamps on the fretboard I think "I gotta get some of those", definitely look easier to use than a bike tube.
@timsway
@timsway Жыл бұрын
@@johnisch88 they are slower but I prefer them to the "wrapping" method as if something is amiss, I can still see it and fix it.

@@timsway Also the glue squeeze out can be problematic with a bike tube, I end up protecting everything with blue tape, not ideal, but it works

Necks still scare me. Like anything else, I'm sure it just takes practice. Will also add that I remember when you got your first CNC, just barely big enough to fit a guitar body. You've certainly come a long way since then. Thanks for sharing!

Hi! Do you use a different fret wire for the zero fret ? I've read several ideas about this and I can't remember you detailing this part. I think I'm gonna test the zero fret on a coming project and I can't really decide wether or not I'll use the same fret wire or a bigger one for this purpose. Thanks.
@timsway
@timsway 8 ай бұрын
I usually use a slightly larger fret for the zero fret, but it's not necessary. I have set it up with all the same frets without issues.
@studiodespenates

@@timsway thanks a lot. I'll give the "same fret everywhere" setup a try.
