Community…all my video game friends back in day were in the same lobbies and leaderboards…the trash talking was more accepted…But yet we still genuinely liked playing with and versus each other…with lobbies changing every game it’s hard to recreate that. ready up, if you know you know

for me a big reason multiplayers games aren't that much fun anymore is because 95% of the player base's seem to want to be the next shroud/Jowo and thinking they are always playing for 1mill and don't seem to want to play for the fun of the game

Gaming has changed so much, I remember meeting my group on nba 2k and we use to play everyday but like tim said as you get older things start to change my group doesn't even really get on video games anymore and it's just crazy how these things develop. Obviously gaming has always been something I adore and I'm gonna continue to game but wow have things changed dramatically.

I feel you Tim. Going from Pac Man and Doom, to Rocket League and COD was a huge difference. When we were playing Halo 2 and CS 1.6 VOIP was new, people were excited to talk to each other, and the most toxic it got was talking about each other's mothers like Goose mentioned. Nowadays, there are people that spend more time coming up with heinous shit to say than actually playing the game. They act like they're going to win some kind of award if they find a way to hurt someone's feelings and they are the main reason developers would rather skip spending time adding features like that just to end up with their game in a headline because, some Twitter Twat decided to threaten people. adding features like that just to end up with their game in a headline because some Twitter Twat decided to threaten people.

I don't think it's possible to narrow it down to a couple reasons why multiplayer games aren't fun anymore. Communication and community is part of it, but I think the novelty and newness wore off from talking to an entire lobby. People don't want to hear the arguing, random music, obnoxious kids, or any other negative variant. It's easier to jump in a party chat with people you like and want to bullshit with. The most successful multiplayer games just feel stale now. We know they're going to release a new game or season every single year, with minor adjustments, the same stale gameplay, and the same challenges to unlock new versions on items/skins. There hasn't been a huge shake up in what multiplayer games offer in a long time. It's the same cycle of buy, grind, buy grind, buy, grind. In the process, people are in a mad dash to unlock things to keep up with the jonses, rather than playing the game because it's fun. They mostly feel like checklists. There is no yearning for a huge no release after a 3 year hiatus, with new ideas and technology. To make it worse, they monetization of these games it outrageous. Super expensive microtransactions pollute multiplayer, rather than offering them behind fun missions or challenges. Hell, sports games are glorified slot machines to just play with your favorite players. It's all designed to be easily digested with long grinds to keep players hooked, while they blast you with splash screens to buy their shit. It's gross. The last example might be a tough pill to swallow, but content creators have obliterated some of the landscape of games. Every new game/update has numerous people uploading broken builds and meta's within a couple hours. Secrets are posted instantly. People spend less and less time exploring the game and more time diving right in to the most broken shit in the game. Too many people feel like they have to be operating at peak efficiency at all times, otherwise you're wasting their time. When money became easily and readily available just for people that were good at the game, the casual population diminished instantly. People now make an insane living by playing a game for 8 hours a day, which means you're incredibly likely to get smoked by more and more people who play "professionally". I'd argue that's exactly why so many developers thought sbmm would work. For any game to be fun. To wrap up this long rambling post - you can change some things, but others are too far gone. Things will mostly stay the same until there is a huge industry shake up, which I don't see happening any time soon. I've learned to enjoy single player games again and look back on multiplayer games with fond memories, but they aren't for me anymore.

Party chat is what has killed online gaming. I live in the UK and I have friends in Ohio, because I met one back on Rainbow Six Vegas coop campaign, spoke in game, added him as a friend and now 15years later still good buddies, friends with other members of his family, flown over to meet them all numerous times and now I just sit in a party talking to people I already know because I don't want to listen to the high levels of toxicity that is found in game chat these days aswell

I've been playing with the same dudes for the last 17 years (since we were 14 and on cod4). It isn't the lack of community that makes the games boring. It's the fact people can just pre aim everything or all have insane movement. There's nothing for the casual gamer anymore. We can't just get on and have fun without going up against someone who can wipe the entire team themselves. We're old and just want to have fun. Can't do that anymore.

@TIM After watching and reading some of these comments... I am 10 years older than many here and the idea of glory days of gaming is subjective. I grew up with the first consoles and the very first PC's. None of these had online but I rarely wanted to play without friends. When I started playing online it was only with friends I knew. We always had our own clique and kinda stuck to it most of the time. Back then there was more pride in team based activities. We trash talked a bit but it was not as toxic as it is now. There was competitive respect and community values. As the eras in gaming went by it got worse. The toxicity is so bad and the division gap between the players has widened dramatically. Us older gamers don't want to deal with petty BS and toxic behavior so we either stop playing or go silent. That is also another thing that adds to this...the industry has changed because the developers in the industry itself have gotten bored (or stupid). If we go back and play a game we use to love and have tons of nostalgia for it...a good percentage of the time you will not play it as much like you use to due to the graphics, speed, audio and story content. There are some games that will stand the test of time but not that many because the industry keeps pushing hardware limits and comprehensive abilities of players. I am getting older so the increase in speed with games these days is too much for me to keep up. Its not the multiplayer modes...its the younger players making the industry change. These last few generations of kids have no idea what couch co-op really is either and they play online with people they have no attachment to or respect for. So they get this idea they can say or do what they want and not care when they really should. They feel entitled and act out. If they were next to these people they would act totally different. On another note, lots of players in games want to experience them differently than you do so it has a negative effect on your experience when playing with them. That adds to the negativity of multiplayer because nobody wants to compromise or take it for the team once in awhile. TIM, I think competitive gaming is the root cause not multiplayer itself.

Realistically as someone born in 94, you can't say video games have gotten less interesting or boring even. Because realistically there is skill-based matchmaking so it's more fun for people who suck like me who don't play everyday. And then you got more options to play and you still have voice chat in most popular games you still have multiplayer in most games you still have the ability to create private lobbies and have fun with that. If wildcat hasn't taught you anything in his videos that we all know that you watch then I guess you learned nothing. But realistically video games are kind of at a peak. Communication is still existent skill level still matters and matchmaking may not be the best it can be but it still exists so that's a plus over games from early 2000s
