This is the best FD removal vid I've ever seen. Thanks very much John.

1001 Thanks. I have the BMW repair manual, but watching your detailed video made it clearer. The drive shaft on my 2015 R1200RT is NOT secured at the front with a clip -- the whole shaft floats. So I could not easily disengage the rear from the shaft by just dropping it. Easier to just pull the rear and check the needle bearing like you said. BTW, the BMW manual says the torque on that bearing stud is 145 Nm (107 ft-lbs)

Thanks for the video. A nice job to do on a rainy day in the garage indeed 🙂

It's funny--about halfway through this job it started getting hot in my garage. I opened the door to find that the sun had come out and it was a beautiful day! Fortunately I was able to hop on my Triumph while there was still daylight and take a spin.

Hi John. It's always very interesting to watch Your videos. But I wonder, why don't You use BMW manual? It is available for free and contains a lot of useful information. Much easier to do maintenance when You have step by step instructions with pictures. Especially, tightening torques. Btw, that white grease on rubber boot is not lithium, it is Staburags nbu 30 ptm - very sticky waterproof grease.

If you found a free BMW manual online it is a pirated copy. BMW does not sell or give away factory repair manuals, although you can find the owner's manuals online. You can also find the Haynes manual for some model years. As for the rubber boot grease, BMW did recommend white lithium grease for years--possibly they have updated that advice, I don't know. In any case, it isn't that important as long as what you use is compatible with rubber and won't wash away with water or heat.

@@tinderboxarts Hmmm... If software is not being sold, it can't be pirated :) Anyway, RSD is not supported anymore, last release was in 2016 and now repair manuals available online only. So, I really don't see any reasons why not to use this abandoned software for old bikes. And because this software doesn't have any protection, so it's not a piracy, but unauthorized use (maximum). But I never heard that BMW cared about RSD was being used by ordinary people. So, of course it's up to You, but this software saved me billions of hours digging through KZbin & forums to find how to do this or that. I paid big money to BMW for bike, I believe I have a right to repair it by myself and thus, have a right for proper documentation. Haynes is different story - they sell it, so I don't buy it and don't pirate it. As to grease - I haven't seen any older recommendations, but in 2016 BMW was using staburags nbu 30 ptm. And it is not lithium. Even more, it designed for fretting corrosion protection. I have no idea why BMW says this particular grease must be used, but when I contacted one chemical plant, that makes thousands of different greases, they said they don't have anything similar and recommended to use original staburags. So, yes, any outdoor waterproof grease can be used to seal the boot. But staburags is also being used in many other places on bike, so may be BMW optimized number of different greases.

I agree that all manufacturers should be providing access to repair manuals as well as other specialized tools needed for repair. In fact, there are many efforts in US states and at the federal level to require this access by law known as "right to repair" laws. Your pirated version of a software manual is probably nothing BMW will chase you down about, I just don't want to make people think that there is an official version available.
