The saddest part is the last scene of Ricky Tarr. Just 1 second in the rain. Does he know of her death? Or he knew it from scratch? Or he never knows?

Great prop effects with the bloody piece of brain/skull stuck to the wall and slowly sliding downwards. The Tokarev TT33 pistol chambered in its high velocity, smaller bore 7.62mm x 25 cartridge would have been a poor choice indoors with its great penetration increasing the risk to bystanders. A better choice would have been the Makarov used in the Prideaux shooting scene. Its bigger bore 9mm x 18 Makarov round would have been more suitable.

Should have used a baseball bat and saved bullets. Why waste ammo? That never made sense to me. It would give him time to watch her die and possibly break him further.

I never understood this, why should him (Prideaux) know Irina, who was Tarr's lover?
@quiensera99476 жыл бұрын
They didn't know if he was the one who got in a relationship with her so they checked by shooting her infront of him and seeing if he flinched

They thought he was handling her or at least received material from her. Shooting her was always going to happen no matter what he said.

@@quiensera9947 You may be right. In a nonsense film, one nonsense explanation works as well as any other. It seems the idea here, unlike in the original story, is that the Mole did not betray Ricky & Irina. Therefore, Karla does not know who Irina's lover was. This is also, I guess, the point of inserting the torture murder of Tufty. Seems in this version the Mole dindu nuffin bad; and Smiley is the real villain.

I just watched this and the timeline doesn’t work out. He was taken by the Russians a long time before this and Ricky has only been missing a few months so how can she be shot now then meet Ricky after this?

It’s a fair comment! The movie definitely condenses the timeline a bit but not in a way that explicitly contradicts the book. There are basically two sets of events the book is flashing back to - Operation Testify (where Jim is taken) and Ricki’s affair with Irina. Reading the book, it seems clear Operation Testify happened further in the past. As a result of its fallout, Smiley and Control are pushed out and Guillam is sidelined. Control then dies (it is stated this happens at Christmas). But it is clearly not ancient history; in the present, Jim is serving in his first term as a teacher, and his resume is blank. An ambiguous but not overlong period has passed since he was captured, and it is not stated explicitly how long he was held. Similarly, Ricki’s affair with Irina occurred recently but not in the immediate past, as he panicked and disappeared for months after she was captured before turning up in England. And her death isn’t discovered in the present; instead, Guillam remembers having heard about it months before. The film is basically saying that these two periods overlapped - Ricki’s affair with Irina, and her execution, took place while Jim was a captive. Not impossible but it seems unlikely as it would mean Ricki was in hiding for quite a long time while many events took place - Smiley’s retirement, Control’s death, Jim’s release and reintegration into civilian life, etc. But even in the book Tarr is portrayed as a bit of a self-serving flake, even if he does love Irina. My best guess at the book timeline is that Testify happened about two years in the past and Tarr’s affair about six months ago. But as there are multiple unaccounted periods, it’s not malpractice to suggest they were simultaneous.
