Phenomenal video! Great job comparing directly while also bringing in the nuances of each tool. I'm still using the Bosch 12V non-brushless and love how quiet it is, which is why I ended up returning the Festool CXS 12 soon after getting it. In time, I think the CXS 12 might end up back in my shop as I have adopted Centrotec with my other Festool drills. Really, great job on this video, it's what I wish I made when the CXS 12 came out. Looking forward to seeing your channel grow!

Excellent, very helpful vid and the last thing I want to seem is critical, BUT a significant item that deserves mentioning here is the Centrotec chuck on the festool. This requires proprietary shanks or it requires the user to use adapters that either do not have a locking mechanism or otherwise stick out so far that you lose part of the relevancy of a compact tool. SIGNIFICANT - but very on-brand - drawback for the Festool

If you buy into festool, you likely aren't deterred but the centrotec tax as much as some might be. Centrotec works really well, but the prices are quite absurd. So in terms of it working as they intended, it's great. But for those that don't want to pay the festool tax then I agree with you.

FYI: Bosch has introduced an SDS chuck for the 12v flexiclick now. Good for small holes and tap cons. Also don't forget that many of Metabo's 18v drills have multi-chuck ability as well, not to mention that Fein's 18v drills also have interchangeable chucks.

@@TinkerWithTools In Europe you can find the Bosch 18V GSR 60 FC, I don't know how it's called in the US. It is a wonderful tool and most often overlooked in non-european tests I watched. The Hammerdrill attachment for the 12V Version is kind of lacking in a way and received mixed reviews in the german tool market.

I could be wrong but I think that its just the GSR18V-535FCB15 in the US market. The coloring is different here but based on specs, I think that is the equivalent. I have a video on it I did last year comparing it to two 12v multi-chuck drills, and then I also mention it briefly here. I put it through the same testing that I did on this video, and it is bigger heavier and not as delicate or precise. But it's made like a tank and has a very consistent clutch (just not super sensitive). Overall I like it.

I’ve had the m12 installation driver and the Bosch chameleon and the Bosch wins by a lot. Just that forward/reverse button on the m12 is enough to discard it. The chameleon is my daily, love how small it is and has more than enough power and speed to do everything I need to do and more

I got the Festool CXS 18 as my installation driver for work. The handle is much larger which allows for both the middle and index finger usage.

FWIW Festool also makes a 12v & 18v drills that use the same range of chucks, and have a conventional grip. TXS12 & TXS18. They are trying to cover all the bases.

I love the direction switch of my Milwaukee. No accidental switching any more while working with the tool. That happens from time to time with my 18V Bosch. Before using a battery powered drill, I pressing the trigger to ensure in runs in the right direction anyway. Though I have really small hands, I can reach the selector with my thumb easily.

I think that it's one of those things that if this is your primary drill, then you will grow accustomed to it, and I can see what you mentioned being a pro. I know that most people hate it. It's not my primary drill, that would be a Bosch 18V-60C, but I use it a lot. Have the same kind of switch on my 3/8" impact driver.

I think one of the reasons the CXS 12 clobbered the Bosch a little bit is because of the inline grip ergonomics. Like Sedge points out, with the C-style you don't have to use your off hand to press the back of the drill. The net effect is that the torque is utilized more efficiently on the CXS. I'm thinking about ordering the 6.0 Ah battery for my Bosch. Some reviews say it ups the power and it allows the drill to stand up with the heavier attachments.

Note: the 18v CXS is a little more powerful than the 12v version, but it’s also likely a little more powerful than the specs suggest. Converting nm to inch pounds off the UK Festool website, they are using the same max torque specs for both the 12v and 18v drills (compared to the US site), but the US version of the 18v has a 4 Ah battery rather than a 3Ah (whereas both 12v drills come with the same 2.5 Ah batteries). Both sites also claim the 18v w/o a battery is the same weight as the 12v. I’m not sure how that can be, but it can’t be much of a difference anyway; and because of the c body, the 18v is probably similar in height to the DeWalt 12v, but it is also probably considerably more powerful because of the battery (while still competing in the same size/weight class of drill). Just as important, the 18v CXS is 3 db quieter than the 12v CXS. As you probably know, 3 db is significant considering the non-linear/exponential nature the decibel rating system. Just some more food for thought.

140 for that attachment is a pure insult, not to mention that that attachment is basically the most important and the main reason to get a tool like this in the first place. You can get a top of the line 12v drill for that money...

One thing I wanted to mention was about the OSHA requirements. These ratings are typically based on working a certain number of hours (7 or 8 I think, but I can't remember). So I don't think any of these tools fail the OSHA requirement if you use them less often than that. For me, I will never use a drill for that long, so the sound pressure aspect is not a concern for me; but for professional installers that might be another story.

Correct. The actual language of OSHA requirements is a fun read if you haven’t given it a try. The 85db limit is just the threshold when using their calculation you need to use it. But they also recommend you use it under 85 as well.

I imagine the reason the CXS 12 stays loud at a distance is because of the specific frequency of the noise. It would be interesting to measure that and compare to the other tools as that would shed some light on which is the most annoying and/or harmful to your hearing.

Yeah, when I found that in the data I started to look into the equipment needed to test that sort of thing. It was more expensive and complex that what I would potentially get as a return on that investment at this point. I do think that there might be something there with the frequency.

I've heard from a Korean professional that weird short handle of CXS and not so short but similar D shape handle of M12 are actually due to the installation job requirements. As you know, Korea is super abundant of those street signs on a lot of metropolitan buildings with at least 5 floors high and these people literally work +8 hours a day installing/removing those signs. And he pointed out that the 'strange' handle is actually really helpful when you have to screw into a ceiling or from down to top situation to install some racks for signs. Usually, this situation involves a lot of screwing into metal surface which needs precise control. He said he can do it with regular handle (like DeWalt in this video) but prefers the D type handle way better thanks to the straight screw-to-hand alignment. Well, that's not a situation for me, a home owner+DIYer who just need a few screws into odd, narrow lumber surface from time-to-time. So, if I'm getting one of these, probably not so high priority at all, I'll get DeWalt. But then again, details are devils for professionals.

What is never mentioned in most reviews is bit runout. One of the reasons so many cabinet makers use Festool drivers is that the Centrotec bits have the least runout of any other manufacturer.

You are right, it wasn't mentioned. I really do like centrotec in terms of the control that it offers, but it's also another added cost with running festool products. I have next to no local availabilty of centrotec bits even at my local festool dealers. They just don't have a lot of it in stock, even if I wanted to pay the price. And without it, the festool experience is less functional than the other brands featured here since the locking 1/4" hex bit holder isn't included with tool just the magnetic one. Not bagging on it's function, more the cost and the ease of access to the system.

I really appreciate this video. The most important factors for me are quality of the drill, the chuck, and the ergonomics. I'd have loved to see more detail on which drills have the best chuck, (especially if any have a Rohm) and which tools have the most available chucks. Not all brands have all types of chucks and some have extras worth considering. I'd also like to know if any have a higher/lower top speed. I own the 4 speed 12v Fein, am very happy with its performance, quality and ergonomics, although I wish it was possible to buy an eccentric chuck for it.

Best quality chuck in my opinion is the Hilti. I love it. It seems to be an unbranded Rohm if you ask me. The Milwaukee is decent. It’s similar to the M12 gen drill if you are familiar. The rest are plastic outer chucks and not as premium. The Festool feels quite cheap for the tool. They have a metal add on on chuck that you can buy for the new tool that also works with their 18v but it’s a decent chunk of money. Festool, metabo and metabo come with three chucks only. And on Festool that’s if you buy the more expensive kit. The rest come with the four standard. The Festool has others you can buy for the new CXS 12 like a drywall screw collet. Hope that helps.

I haven't have experience with the Bosch or new Festool but I heard you can rotate the right angle and eccentric chucks while the chuck is still locked onto the tool. That seems like a nice feature. While the m12 comes with more metal in the chucks, I felt the right angle and eccentric chucks were hard to get to seat properly depending on what position I wanted. Maybe the factory was off on the tolerances the day my chucks were built.

Excellent test, thanks for posting it and putting in all the work you did. I'm also with you on these multi head drivers being my favorite drivers. For a while I had the milwaukee but sold it and got the dewalt instead. I've been very happy with it, and as tempted as I was by the new CXS 12, the dewalt has worked so well for me I don't feel the need or desire to "upgrade". Plus, my favorite 18V drill is the DCD800, so two different batteries, but a single charger. Lately, I've been very happy with all my dewalt purchases, though the M12 pin nailer is probably one of my favorite tools of all time.

Glad you enjoyed it. The festool feels more refined but at the end of the day both tools were great. I don't think an upgrade is necessary unless you just want it. As for the pin nailer, I love the thing. I have both the M12 and the Dewalt 20v max and I go for the M12 most of the time. I am also anxiously awaiting the release of the M12 Fuel Brad Nailer. It won't have the capacity of the bigger M18 but for a lot of what I do, I want the reduction in form factor.

Yeah the only pneumatic nailers that I still don't have a cordless version for are the narrow crown stapler and a framing nailer. I want to get them but I do so little work with the framing nailer, that it's hard to justify the price premium for cordless (plus the weight) and then on the narrow crown, for the most part i am doing that work in my shop and so my compressor is already there.

What amazing choices we have now. I remember when national Panasonic eclipsed Makita. Those early turquoise beasts were so lame I used a corded cheap skill drill with a keyed chuck which vastly out performed those early disasters.

I've got my eye on the Milwaukee. For me, a big selling point of the tool is the grip style and size, so while the DeWalt seems like a fantastic deal the larger size and standard grip just don't sell it for me (I've already got a normal sized DeWalt 20v drill and impact driver after all). The interchangeable chucks are almost just gravy on top of the ergonomics, but the offset chuck is probably the one I'm most interested in. The number of times I've put a screw in just slightly off angle because I was in a corner, that seems like such an incredible feature. I really don't think I would mind the top button, I think I have large enough hands to just hit it with my thumb when needed.

If the Milwaukee is the only tool you use, you would likely get use to the Top button and would be fine with it. I have owned that Milwaukee for over three years at that point and still love it. But it's not intuitive at all. I find myself flicking the forward and reverse on any other tools without even really thinking about it and this one just requires a little bit more effort.

One thing you will find out with the Milwaukee is the eccentric chuck doesn't have a locking collet. I have found bits tend to get left behind more times than I would like. Not a huge issue but something to consider.

I wasn't sure if the direction button would bother me when I got the m12 and I found that I haven't had many issues. I've gotten accustomed to it. The grip ergonomics on the m12 are great, and If a traditional switch threw off the grip ergonomics, I don't think I would be willing to part with the button. @@TinkerWithTools

Yes the Festool accessories are expensive. But if you’re crazy enough to also buy an 18v Festool drill the eccentric chuck also works with them. So you aren’t buying and carrying around different accessories for each drill

I grabbed the Dewalt bit driver (no speed select on gearbox) to try out a couple of years ago and then an 18v drill and impact as well. I was surprised to find that their trigger precision was almost like Festool. The attachments just seemed cheap on the Festool clone, though. That said, the attachments are cheap on all of these 12v’s compared to the 18v Fein, Festool, Metabo and even Bosch. So, whatever. The original CXS is just too weak to take seriously, imho. Discounting the brushed Metabo, all of the others are going to do the job of the T18/C18 but smaller and lighter…and louder. Words can’t describe how quiet the T18 is. I never appreciated until I got back into more general work and ended up trying every brand under the sun. The Hilti chuck isn’t as niece as you think it’s. Don’t be fooled by its metal sleeve. The Hilti 12v’s are identical to the Panasonic counterparts in all but looks. I like them because I like how they feel in my hand, but I have to presume the Dewalt, latest Bosch, Milwaukee and brushless Metabo all offer more torque. Have you had issues with the Hilti chucks. I have had an 22v Nuron Hilti for about a year now and it works incredibly well. Plus with their 20 year warranty it’ll put anyone’s mind at ease.

@@TinkerWithTools Coincidentally I did have an issue with one chuck (I totally forgot about that) on a 12v. Same chuck as on the Panasonic version. No issues with the one that comes with the multi head. I did replace the chucks on my Nuron drills simply because I didn’t like them. They were fine though. The 10w-22 and 8m-22 will have Röhm chucks. Everything else appears to be Jacobs but without branding. But I could be wrong.

I have used it personally with other batteries and the performance does improve on more premium batteries but at that same time the Bosch and DEWALT would also. While it would likely affect that one category it wouldn’t improve the performance in any other and therefore it’s not likely to adjust the rankings all that much.

Ergonomics are going to be fairly personal. I get that. And you right, the dewalt doesn't necessarily feel like the most robust option here. The bosch is a little tank and performs quite well. There are just a few minor things that I don't prefer about it.

Although I am on the DeWALT flexvolt system (and Milwaukee M18), I do not have any 12v tools so for me I have to decide between the excellent value of the Milwaukee or either the DeWALT or Festool CXS12. Yeah I think the face just came down to a point of disbelief on my part. I had done the testing over several days but didn’t actually look at the winners in each category much before I recorded that point and as the start wouldn’t have predicted the DEWALT would be my winner. Now should you return the Milwaukee with the bonus battery? No I don’t think you have to. The Milwaukee didn’t fair as well I would have predicted but really whether you choose DEWALT, the new Festool, Milwaukee, Bosch or the Hilti you are getting a pretty good tool that is competitive right now. It will come down to little differences on which is best for you at that point.

@TWT I might’ve missed it in the video, but do the attachments on the Festool CXS 12 accept standard 1/4” hex bits? Or do they only accept centrotec bits, and a centrotec to 1/4” adapter is required? Just wondering because I can’t really find definitive information on but compatibility. I appreciate you sharing! As for your question - yes and no. The locking chuck attachment is a centrotec specific adapter. It will not accept standard 1/4" hex bits. They do provide a 1/4" hex adapter (that is centro tec) and that will allow you to use them, but I find that it's retention on the bit isn't the best. There is a locking bit adapter that would allow you to use standard bits but i haven't purchased it yet.

Yeah, if you are going to go in on Festool, I think the best thing to do is invest in centrotec bits. Proper festool bits are expensive but you can a few other brands a slight discount as well.

@TinkerWithTools I think my friend just wants something for DIY stuff, so the fact that Milwaukee accepts 1/4” bits without an adapter, is going to be the deciding factor for him, since he can just have one set of 1/4” bits that are also compatibility with his bit holding screwdrivers, rather than also carrying centrotec bits in his tool bag. I think the Festool is great though, and I’ll pick one up eventually, along with the Hilti, because installation drivers are probably my favorite type of power tool. The Milwaukee is not available in North America so that's one of the main reasons you haven't seen it on the channel. Festool makes an 18v now. Hikoki recently announced a 18v version as well that looks to be similar to the 12v Metabo (German) version. I have the Bosch and like it but for the form factor and use cases I have ended up going with 12v most of the time.

I am not personally a fan of the Atomic drills... unless you are talking about the second gen DCD799 hammer drill. I much prefer just going to the DCD800 which is roughly the right size but a lot more power. The only concern I have with the 12v recommendation is just how invested Dewalt is in the playform. It's been a while since they have done that much with it...so while it's good now, I have more faith in their 20v max system getting continual improvements.

My new cxs12 is not loud at all. Maybe I got lucky or it depends on the batch - I did have to wait for a restock to receive mine. I am unimpressed by the performance. Just trying to put in a screw to a stud for a drywall patch it would quit and beep over & over. I probably should have got the 18. It will be fine for other things - drilling/driving will be great, but I probably needed the 18 for putting in drywall screws to studs. It is fine, but it is underwhelming.

Just curious do you have the old CXS? For the noise comparison that is. As for the performance. If you are getting the beep you might be in one of the clutch settings. If you switch it to the drill setting on the dial I have sunk a 8” timberlok which is considerably larger than a drywall screw.

The noise is right there with most of the other brushless tools but it has a different tone or pitch to it that makes it more noticeable. Even the Hilti which measured louder, didn't feel that way in person necessarily. It's not enough to drive me away from the tool, but I can see how people find it a deal breaker.

Honestly, I don't know who would buy those Festool models. That Festool attachment alone costs more than my Milwaukee and Bosch sets. I got Milwaukee set with 2 batteries for $113 and Bosch for $99. I got Milwaukee first because of the M12 investment. However, after owning the Bosch I use it much more. I'm not too fond of the guard bit magnet and top directional button on the Milwaukee.

If you could get the Festool kit for $189 and can handle the noise... then that is what I would pick, but that would be mostly based on terms of refinement of the tool. Festool tools are nice to use and it's why people pay outrageous sums of money for them and the system that they reside in.

That's very helpful because, if they were both $189, you're essentially picking the refinement of the Festool over the power of the DeWALT, but because you mentioned the lower price point. I'm basically coming back to considering a Festool because I recently purchased a UJK Parf Guide Mark II jig to build my own 2096 benchtop. And while I know I will be clamping it down when I start drilling the pilot holes, I was looking at the 3mm drill bit and the 20mm cutter and noticed they are built for the Centrotec system which as you know, among other things, reduces runout/wobble. And while most people appear overwhelmingly happy with the Parf Guide Mark II jig, once in awhile people are running into accuracy issues as it is essential to lay these holes out as precisely as possible to get as close to CNC accuracy as possible, and in one case the person claimed he couldn't get to the bottom of the inaccuracy issue even working with Axminster's engineers to see what went wrong. I don't think it is a stretch that most people are using Festool drills making these products, so now I am a little worried I might be investing all this money on the Parf Guide Mark II only to ruin a very expensive piece of 18mm plywood. Peter Parfitt, who invented the system along with the engineers at Axminster Tools said that he uses the original CXS to build most of his desktops with the Parf Guide system, but in his videos I only see him using it for the pilot holes; he uses one of Festool's $600+ Cordless percussion QUADRIVE drills to drill out the 20mm holes (but I will take him at his word that often uses the CXS for this purpose). Either way, he's also always drilling/cutting into MDF and not plywood. I guess I am wondering if a CXS might somehow yield better results than my 12v or my 20v DeWALT DCD999 hammer drill/driver. Those are my only two options at the moment. Heck, maybe I should be looking at the CXS 18 or even the older C 18 for the extra power. The C 18 is also quieter like the original CXS. If you were building a 2096 bench with a Parf Guide Mark II guide, what would you probably use?

I have considered getting the part guide a time or two but the price has always deterred me so I get that you want to be as accurate as possible if that is the direction that you are going. obviously when it comes to stuff like chuck wobble and such, I am not set up to test precision, but if you are using centrotec bits, that system excels at that. 20mm holes with the CXS 12 would be possible, but I would be susprised if someone is using the old CXS as the primary tool, I would be surprised. But who knows. I just wasn't a fan of that tool in 2022 when I bought it for the price that I paid for it. If I were doing this my self, I would probably use the CXS 12 or something like the Metabo (German, not Metabo HPT) that I featured on the channel a while back. That drill offers a good level of precision on refinement. One consideration that I don't know if you have looked into would be see if someone would rent you CNC time to do it. While there would be a cost associated with that, I am guessing that it would be less expensive that the Parff guide plus a CXS 12 if that is the route you would go. Just food for thought.

If I was relying on this 2096 or MFT-style bench as a track saw cutting station I might have hired someone with a CNC, but I have the TSO parallel guide system, so I really don’t need that level of precision in the dog holes though it would be nice. Plus I have plans to take advantage of the 2096 modularity for future projects (requiring me to drill holes for other components down the road). I’m leaning towards the power of the CXS 18, but I think I may just end up going with the CXS 12. I still have a little time to decide, but it’s a tough one.

I believe on almost all, if not all of them, you can do that. they aren't necessarily a locking bit holder at that point but some do have a magnet that makes it functional at that point.

I am guessing you are talking about assembly and installation? There are two ways you could go in my opinion. THe installation drill driver would work (and as you can see there are several to choose from). The other option would be the Surge from Milwaukee (either M12 or M18). Those would give you the traditional impact performance with greatly reduced noise.

Yes, they do have a stem style pack like the others but from what I have learned from my research it appears to be their older stuff. They seem to have made the switch to the slide style pack, so that is the reason for not including it at this point. I do have the new Brushless Metabo on order and when it comes in (currently slated for mid November) I will do a video dedicated to that and how it compares to these.

@@Prime0pt The in-handle battery pack drill from Metabo is only a brushed model (note that Mafell sells a re-branded version of that drill as well). The 12v brushless only comes in the slide pack, and there are newer 4AH 21700 cell based batteries for these which are fantastic battery packs for a 12v drill (you'll find Hilti has similar 4AH packs for their 12v tools). Makes the brushless Metabo almost as strong as the DeWalt.

Almost every single battery stop working in 1-2 years max. Buying new batteries is pointless. So I tried out Ridgid slightly better battery life but run out juice fast. over 10 years now I completely swapped to Milwaukee entire set of M18 and M12. All batteries still running strong and I use it daily. Only one battery bites the dust. For me. The battery is very important no matter how good the tool is. No power no work. And I love cordless tools

It was more consistent than the Dewalt, but the dewalt was better in power, sensitivity, noise. You won't be disappointed with either and if you have the money, the experience with the Festool is more premium, but in testing I think the dewalt still might edge it out.

@@TinkerWithTools I think the CXS 18 may be more powerful than the DeWalt while having as much control in the lower torque settings. Yes, the lower torque specs are the same as the CXS 12 (and perhaps not as sensitive as the DeWAlt as I think you pointed out), but part of the reason the CXS 12 and Bosch traded back and forth in testing has to do with the CXS 12's higher bore axis (like a pistol) as the Bosch has more overall torque (although it's 300 ft. lb. specs might be for metal rather than wood). Getting right behind the bore axis allows a person to naturally have more leverage behind the tool. But as you also pointed out, you cannot grip the CXS 12 lower on the frame using your index finger on the trigger. Since the CXS 12 and CXS 18 have identical second gear torque, gripping the CXS 18 lower on the frame could theoretically give you even less torque than the high grip of the CXS 12. Moreover, the extra torque Sedge demonstrates the CXS 18 [using a higher grip] in drill mode is quite impressive with the 1-3/8" drill bit (I saved the start time of the demonstration): kzbin.info0pOLzD39iBY?si=laMwY7EqdKAC0qUv&t=489. Like I mentioned, I think the CXS 18 was meant to replace the C 18. Yes, it's slightly less power, but if you need more than the CXS 18 you're probably going to use a hammer drill/driver. As such, I really think-as expensive as it is-the CXS 18 is probably the king of the hill regarding installation drill drivers as it is both for assembly and an even better choice than its little brother for things like "deck construction". That makes sense given it is an 18v tool. It also isn't a one-off. The CXS 12 is a lone 12v tool in the Festool line. The CXS 18, however, gives you a 4 ah 18v battery which is still suitable for other 18v tools in their line other than the sanders. Moreover, the CXS 18 is actually quieter than the CXS 12: CXS 12 Fastening: A-weighted sound pressure level, LpA 75.00 dB(A) Fastening: A-weighted sound power level, LWA 86.00 dB(A) CXS 18: Fastening: A-weighted sound pressure level, LpA 72.00 dB(A) Fastening: A-weighted sound power level, LWA 83.00 dB(A) 3 decibels is actually quite significant when it comes to firearms (which you might think would matter less), but I don't know about drills. Anyway, if you ever end up pulling the trigger of a CXS 18, I would LOVE to see it go up against the DeWALT and CXS 12 in particular. My guess is that it would come out on top as the most versatile drill-not just among installation drill/drivers-but among drills period. For most homeowners/DIYers, it might be the only drill/driver they'd ever need. I mean, if the CXS 18 can drill a big hole like that, why would I even need a separate drill and impact driver as a homeowner/DIYer? Especially with all the chucks available for the CXS 12/18 (e.g. drywall chuck). I would much rather a quieter one tool solution as expensive as it is.

The old CXS was in the video. At this point it’s not really eating anyone’s lunch in terms of anything but precision. And given that’s it’s still $339 new I have a hard time recommending it.

The best clutch here in my opinion is the Festool but the dewalt wasn't bad either.

I could never justify the 'normal' drill or 'normal collet' attachments in my head. And because of it, I haven't been able to justify spending double on an installers driver over a normal screwdriver for (in my mind) only two actual useful attachments 🙇‍♀️ These need a through-hole nutrunner or a pizzawheel cutter 🙏 when there's only two unique attachments it makes multihead drivers look so much less relevant compared to a normal screwdriver

I think with something like the Dewalt 12v Brushless Screwdriver, the way that you might use the tools is similar, but I do think that the added versatility of the additional chucks is a nice touch. Given their intended purpose of being something for installing cabinetry, I think the four chucks that most of them have a good for the intended purpose.
