Some great footage there. Kinda sad though; it's hard to tell what's scrap, what's for repair and what's operational. BR really didn't care about their equipment. That's one, of very few, good things about today's motive power. With the exception of DBS stuff, you'll rarely see a scruffy, rusty loco nowadays. Even the RHTT locos are filthy, not rotten with tinworm and neglected. It makes me appreciate the operational, preserved locos all the more. They show how locos 𝒄𝒂𝒏 look, when maintained properly. Can't really say that for all of them but examples like the Deltics and CFPS 40s spring to mind. Thanks for the memories though.👍😁

Cheers for your comment. I was lucky enough to go round Toton Depot in October and to be honest, you couldn't tell which sheds were in service or the ones that were stored so the same thing is happening almost 30 years on!!

56017, It was involved in a collision with a class 31 & was severely damaged. the loco ended up at Toton TMD then roaded to Crewe for spares recovery returned to Toton prior to final cutting up, 56017 was noted heavily stripped & dumped on the floor as a shell Hulk on 20th March 1993,

Was you on a Pheonix railtour by any chance? Me and my dad did a few round Tinsley and Toton in the 90s

These Depot visits were made with the RESL group, Rail Enthusiast Society Ltd. My first Toton trip i booked to go on was in 1986. I was so excited but when we got on the coach we were told our Permit had been cancelled as someone had got killed crossing the main line near the Depot so we had to view the Locos from the bank opposite. Still managed to get about 50 numbers in the book and every one of them was a red line in my Platform 5 book. Didnt get many class 20 coming to the Southern Region where i lived near Guildford!!

@@paulcresswell1843 Never in a million years, too many box tickers hiding behind H&S, did anybody get hurt or fall over, nope we all had a good time, mind you we all had common sense then. Remember when Coalville & Burton had open days, good summer weekends out. Living near Castle Donnington, Drakelow, Ratcliffe & Willington the MGR traffic was busy 24/7.

What happened to the master and slave shunters that were common there back in the 70's
@thegridnutter83772 жыл бұрын
I think they got cut up as they were used on Tinsley's 'hump' in the yard to shunt wagons. Were surplus to requirements so were made into razor blades
@davidtomlinson9072 жыл бұрын
Yeah they were scrapped by the mid 80s
@2H80vids2 жыл бұрын
Not that "common", there were only three of them IIRC, class 13s, based at Tinsley.

Unfortunately i never made it to Tinsley 😒😒 was it located just before where Meadowhall is today ?
@thegridnutter83772 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin. If you went to that location today there is now a Container loading pad down on the through lines towards Tinsley yard. The Depot was up on the bank behind the Container terminal where the Sheffield Car Shop service centre is located on Google maps
