This Cistercian monastery was founded c. 1200 by William, Earl Marshal on lands held through his marriage to the Irish heiress, Isabella de Clare. This abbey, founded as a daughter-house of Tintern Major in Wales is often referred to as Tintern de Voto.
The nave, chancel, tower, chapel and cloister still stand. In the 16th century the old abbey was granted to the Colclough family and soon after the church was partly converted into living quarters and further adapted over the centuries. The Colcloughs occupied the abbey from the sixteenth century until the mid-twentieth.
The Abbey - which is today in ruins, some of which have been restored - was founded in c.1200 by William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, as the result of a vow he had made when his boat was caught in a storm nearby. While the specific date of foundation is unconfirmed in some sources, in a 1917 analysis for the Royal Irish Academy, church historian J. H. Bernard suggests a foundation date of 3 December 1200.
Once established, the abbey was colonised by monks from the Cistercian abbey at Tintern in Monmouthshire, Wales, of which Marshal was also patron. To distinguish the two, the mother house in Wales was sometimes known as "Tintern Major" and the abbey in Ireland as "Tintern de Voto" (Tintern of the vow).
After the Dissolution of the Monasteries the abbey and its grounds were granted to firstly to Sir James Croft, and then in 1575 to Anthony Colclough of Staffordshire, a soldier of Henry VIII. His descendants became the Colclough Baronets. The final member of the Colclough family to reside at Tintern was Lucey Marie Biddulph Colclough who donated the abbey to the Irish state.
Between 1982 and 2007, the National Monuments service of the Office of Public Works undertook a number of excavation and heritage development efforts at the abbey, including special conservation measures for local bat colonies.Additional works were undertaken after a fire in the site's visitor centre in 2012, which damaged part of the 19th century outbuildings on the abbey's grounds.

This is really set in beautiful settings Sue.The Church and the Graveyard were kept in beautiful condition too, some good old headstones too.I should imagine some of the smaller stones could be older than those. The Knights memorial was really well carved and detailed. There may even have been a tomb under it at some time and it was moved .I am surprised there was so much of the Priory left standing, most have been badly damaged during the reformation. It’s just beautifully set in the trees isn’t it?Lovely day for you too.!we have just had white skies, even when it’s been at the hottest in the Midlands..But cooler last two days with a bit of rain.Thank goodness. Thanks for what you do I miss not being able to walk much and go places and your my legs..Love n Light 🥰

William Marshall and Isabel de Clare are my grandparents. Isabel, her mother Aoife MacMurrough and one of Isabel's daughters are buried at Tintern Abbey. Isabel's father was Gilbert FitzRichard de Clare, better known as "Strongbow". William was instrumental in the writing and enforcement of Magna Carta and was Regent of England during King Henry III minority. Marshall fought and won, the Battle of Lincoln, his last battle when he was in his 70's. He was the only man to ever unhorse Richard the Lionheart. Richard was reported to have said, God's legs Marshall, don't kill me!" William replied, "Let the devil kill you, for I will not!" and drove his lance into Richards horse instead. At the time William was guarding King Henry's escape from his son, Richard.

They can't be your "grandparents", as they lived nearly a thousand years ago, but they would have to be your great, great, great, great, great.....fill in the rest of the greats, because there are a lot of greats after all that time. Lol But I think that's fascinating, especially because both of them were so noble and godly, and from the reports of those around him, as Marshall was dying, he showed such concern for everyone attending him, including his servants, and he showed so much courage, peace, and faith as well, while facing his own mortality. You should be so proud of having them as your ancestors, as they were absolutely amazing people. 🙂

Having empathy and a sensitivity for the lives that were lived……..If possible could you give more histories on the churches, etc. Why are so many abandoned? Who takes care of the many cemeteries? Are there historic societies involved?…So sorry for the many questions. Kind of got carried away. Anyway, thanks for the lovely and informative walks. God bless you too!

Thank you Maryann, I'm not 100% sure why they become ruins some of it was war and they were restored by our historical society, others I think got like this as communities became larger, most of our old cemeteries are forgotten, maybe volunteer's will go in clear, record and then they are left..its crazy the amount of Places we find that you can barely walk around, sad really x x

Thanks for your interesting and beautiful video . I was most confused at first though as I have loved seeing Tintern , in the Wye valley Wales , all my life and did not realise another Tintern existed ! I thought everything would come clear if I watched the film , but I was most surprised to find out about another Tintern entirely in Ireland ! Brilliant discovery . Not very far away from the Tintern in Wye valley is a sizable Welsh lake called Llangorse , a natural glacial moraine lake , in the Black mountain area and roughly between Abergavenny and Brecon . The church at Llangorse village has Ogham script carved into the stone building corners . Ogham was used in Irish and Welsh Celtic and consisted of varying lengths of lines instead of letters . My point though , before I digress further is that there are links to powerful Irish families in this part of Wales . For instance Brecon gets it's name from king Brychan , who ruled Brecknock (Brycheiniog) or Breconshire , roughly modern day Powys . The name Brychan might have come from the Irish name Broccán . King Brychan was born in Ireland and his father was Prince Anlach . Also there is crannog , an artificial island , at Llangorse lake . I believe this crannog is the only example in Wales . There are several in Scotland but none in England . Crannogs are an Irish 'invention' , where there are many examples .

Thank you, so much! This video means a lot to me! I didn't know that the Marshal & Isabel had live in Tintern! I was once in St. Briavels Castle, but never in Tintern Abbey! That was the Marshal's as well! Charming & spooky, little castle! 👍😃 Actually, I'm a colector of castles, medieval history, you name it, just for inspiring myself trying to write a novel of the period, but don't mind to share. Is it all right, if I add some of your videos to my list, please? 😃

The knight actually served from Henry VIII through part of the reign of Elizabeth I? Wow! That sounds like William Marshall, and his long serving of multiple Kings in the same family before HIS death.
