I had a small jon boat that was pretty tight and unstable with my kids in in... so i do what i always do... I modified it to be better. I sourced almost all of the materials from the scrap yard and went to building. It turned out great and accomplished just what i needed.
Stay tuned for another boat build coming soon.

I got a question what type of aluminum did you use for the boat?
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms Жыл бұрын
I believe the sheet I bought was 5086. All of the other stuff was just random aluminum I got from the scrap yard and hoped the alloys would weld decent enough to hold. Worked out that they all did just fine.

If you do that do you have to change the size of the boat on the title ? And also did you up your capacity plate then ?
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms 6 ай бұрын
In some states you can register it as a homemade vessel if you take it down to just parts. Then a new hull id would be issued and you could go from there. On homemade boats, capacity plates aren’t issued, only id. Some titles will only state a length and if the main footprint of the length doesn’t change, I would imagine you could leave it and just continue to go by the capacity listed. I’m no legal expert but it would vary by state and by application I’m sure.

Nice. Hope it turns out great. I love that I did it and gained a lot of understanding in aluminum boats. The boat is still going strong by the way. Make it happen

Why not tig weld it may I ask?

@@rickyheck6780 because I only have a mig. Tig would have been much easier but I simply didn’t have immediate access to one.

@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms I wasn't bad mouthing you just so you know... I was curious to if a spool gun would be more effective compared to a tig with how thick the aluminum was... I'm considering building a west coast low water river boat with like an Rivercross R140 with a 300 hp rotax motor or I'm looking at a tunnel hall flat/semi jon boat... I like the way the river cross is designed because how low and rocky The Juniata River is here in Pennsylvania... I just have never tig welded before... But I have used a Lincoln welder with a spool gun on my reitnoer curtain side aluminum trailer...

@@rickyheck6780 yes sir. Didn’t think anything of it. Tig is better on the thin stuff because you can control the heat. Since you have spent time behind a spool gun you know there will be quite a lot of spurt spurt spurt on the thin stuff.

What about a ten foot Jon could u do a tutorial on a 10 footer ?
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms

If you provide the boat and material I will be glad to. Lol. I don’t make enough money on KZbin to go buy a boat and cut in half just for a video. BUT, if I come across a boat at the scrap yard I will see what I can come up with. A short and wide boat is always good.

Sound like a plan I wouldn’t do it my self how much would this work cost too get a 10 footer done? Not materials but labor?

@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms 8 ай бұрын
@@hillsidesavage1413 I’m sure a shop would charge you as much as just ordering a new one from a custom boat builder. There was a lot of work involved in it because of tearing out the old and then getting it clean enough to weld. It would cost thousands. But if you had time and could do it yourself, it’s a fun project to get a very custom boat.

Would like to do this on my v hull but sounds little more difficult than a boxy Jon boat
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms
@JackArmstrong-jackdaddycustoms Жыл бұрын
Yeah it would definitely be harder. You could add a flat piece like I did but you would effectively end up with a weird looking flat bottom I think. OR, you could concave it a bit in the middle and make it more like a catamaran. That might be sweet.
