I notice you can easily double the draw weight by replacing the slide with a pull cord with a 2:1 pulley. Just put the pulley at the front, the cord anchored at the back, looped around the pulley and then back. Then the pull will travel twice as far with half the force of the draw weight. Since the crossbow is so short, doubling the pull length is quite practical.
@alexcrowder1673
@alexcrowder1673 2 жыл бұрын
That's genius! I know that the WT mini striker has a pull cord that's setup like you described and it has 120lb draw weight (60lb after pulleys). It's also small, but bigger than this obviously, and doubling the drawing distance still isn't even remotely an issue at that size. Since thats the case, it definitely shouldn't be an issue on something absurdly small like this. You could possibly even get away with adding another couple of pulleys and make it even more powerful being as short as it is. Of course then youd have to figure out where to put them all, and how, or if, you will hide them. You'd probably need to make a few parts thicker or out of metal to handle the extra forces too. It'd be one of the coolest crossbow pistols of all time though. Imagine a pistol crossbow like this but with 240lb of rubber band resistance and a 60lb pulling weight. Even if it had to be a tad larger itd be ridiculous.

The crazy thing is, if someone made this out of metal, it could be smaller, stronger, and have more rubber band or pulley strength. This could be a legitimate stealth weapon that’s even quieter than what video games pretend suppressed guns sound like.
@Likexner
@Likexner 2 жыл бұрын
You are right that most suppressed guns are not nearly as quiet as games would have us believe but there are exceptions. I recently watched a guy fire the MP5SD6 which, admittedly, is famous for how incredibly quiet it is, and it actually sounded as quiet as some suppressed guns in games. I was very impressed.
@234ne14
@234ne14 2 жыл бұрын
@@Likexner Indeed the MP5SD is a very quiet gun. Its original patent states that it can reduce the shot's sound to 70 decibels (around a loud human conversation), so in terms of a normal gun's standard (easily over 150 dB; a whooping x256 increase in "perceived loudness for average humans" compared to 70 dB) it's very quiet. Although keep in mind in the real world it's kinda hard to quantify loudness, as there are lots of variables that can affect it. Shooting indoors, for example, can reflect sound in odd patterns allowing it to be more noticeable than an open field, as well as the general vigilance and skill level of soldiers who are trained to perceive certain sounds.

Sadly you'd have to have pulley systems and a very long pull cord and you'd still get an extreeeemely short power stroke due to the length of the crossbow pistol. With short power strokes you lose a ton of power.

You've really outdone yourself with this one! This is why you are my favorite youtuber! I absolutely can not wait to see what 3d printed designs get inspired by this! As others have stated, a pulley assisted cocking cord could allow you to double (or more) the power of the pistol without increasing the strength required to cock it back. Since the drawing distance is so short to begin with, it'd be extremely practical for something like this. You could even add a few pulleys and give it 4 times the power bands. Even having to pull it back 4 times as far for a 4 to 1 advantage is still hardly any distance at all considering how short that pistol is. You could make it incredibly powerful, small, and still fire quickly! The only issues I can imaginw would be material strengths and accuracy taking a dive, since it would be so powerful with such a short power stroke and barrel.

Being able to print a weapon is a moot point I think. You can build a pistol that fires real bullets from some pipe you can get at any hardware store. So you could build a pistol without going through the hassle of 3D printing. That's why I think stricter gun laws won't change too much. A criminal who is inclined to build a dangerous weapon to kill is always going to be able to do so.

Adapting it from two ruber loops to twisting one slightly longer loop(8 or 0/0 or 0//0) might give more power. Plus if it's mostly 3D printed with two thin hardwood or Iron side plates it sould give it higher strength. Also if the darts are restricted to nothing wider than a pencil it sould not need to be that wide. One idea that comes to mind is adapting most of magazines you show off, the lever angle looks to be very shalow Vs that spring. Also replaceing that static rod with a curved arm, might aply more preshure to the reload(faster?) automateing the reload maybe just a mater of adding a small cog on a spring.

*When I was a kid I had a "kit" crossbow. It was basically just a 2x6 board cut into a stock shape with a trigger assembly and two hardened steel rails for the bolt channel. The "bow" itself was meticulously cut from a 26" automotive leaf spring with a hacksaw over the course of a week or so. There was no cocking mechanism but the instructions called for a 36" steel rod with a hook to catch the 1/16" aircraft cable "string"* *You put one end of the rod on the ground, the other hooks the cable, you put your sternum on the butt of the stock and lean hard on the rod to get the cable into the trigger latch. I weighed about 170 pounds and I had to kinda bounce on it to get it fully cocked. No idea what the draw weight really was.* *I made bolts from fiberglass tent frame sticks, the kind with the elastic cord running through them. Glued on ferrules, nocks and fletchings. I shot it through the drivers side door of a 1968 Galaxie 500 and it landed in the passenger seat. Ah, childhood.*

Interesting, would like to see a crono of this to get the speed of the bolts in air, and/ or comparisons to other bows.. Also regular compound bows use cams to gain a mechanical advantage to allow an easier draw and increase potential bow strength/ bolt speed. And as someone mentioned below if this was made of aluminum you maybe able to reduce the size /strength and add this features to it. As it stands now the only draw back IMHO, to the present model (nit picking really) is the need for a spring powered return on the cocking mechanism, for faster follow up shots. Perhaps this would be helpful for divers for spear fishing and as a shark deterrent. Great work, looking forward to more of Joerg's innovations.

Hi Jörg, great work as always! Like many have already mentioned it would be interesting if you integrated it on something like a power drill (I mean the function not the actual power drill as I know you have already done that previously) for automatic cocking as the pistol grip and lower part of the crossbow are currently “empty”. Additionally I have a challenge for you: the instant Legolas mounted on a long bow but instead of using your upper body as source of power you make a stationary solution where you sit down on slide like a rowing machine and use your whole body as source of power instead. You could easily pull 300 pounds (or in your case more when your leg is operational again). Firstly a modern concept and then a medieval concept where it would be something that you mounted on a wagon or a wall like in GoT but semi automatic and functional!
