Great video. But just some info. Our trailer has Dexter EZ Lube axles too. Their info online seems to shows that squirting grease in the zirk fitting and turning the wheel is a regular maintenance thing. However, when we bought our trailer from some nice people that maintained it meticulously, I found the guy over greased the bearings (like everytime they came home from a long trip) he blew out the seal on one wheel and it got all over the brake shoes and corroded them on one side. Just an FYI. I called Dexter about it and they seemed to back pedal on the issue. And said that squiring grease in was for emergency purposes only. If on a long trip and you know you will surpass 10k miles…and want to add a few squirts. And that they recommend the wheel come off and hand repack/inspect the bearings after 10,000 miles or 12 months. Basically a CYA stance. But the bearings do need inspected to avoid issues. Anyway, I am going to have our repacked every 2 years since we don’t reach 10k miles or close to it in a year. The service manager said if anything just squirt a 2 or 3 squirts of grease in if I think it needs it to avoid blowing out the seal. If you pump a bunch of grease and get no old grease out, that’s a bad sign that a seal broke. Spinning the wheel constantly helps distribute the grease to avoid this. More than you wanted to know. Lol. Just sharing what I know. Hope you have a great season camping 😀

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ben. We were following the instructions from the companies who made our camper and the axels but we will definitely check into what you said and will be careful.
@benthekayaker
@benthekayaker Жыл бұрын
@@TakeATripTogether Yeah, no worries. Dexter is the company that makes most RV axles these days. And yours looked just like ours with the rubber cap etc. NuCamp also tells customers the same info about self greasing the Dexter axles etc (unless they have changed) It’s more of an issue with bigger double and triple axle trailers with a lot of weigh. If the brakes fail from broken seals and grease in the brake shoes…bad news. When in Pennsylvania last year we saw a person who lost their camper going down a big hill and it kept going, twisted their truck around and went into the woods. Had the the road shut down for while. 😳

That's one reason we like having a camper with no plumbing. Way less maintenance. But you're right that there's more than with a tent. We used a tent before this and have liked the upgrade but there are pros and cons to everything. Thanks so much for watching!

You're not the only one who has issues with grease guns. There are some really crummy products out there. That goes for some well known brands as well. If they don't work after 5 minutes of dinking with it, it's not you that's defective. I've tossed a few myself.

So I want to be sure I understand. Someone in our FB group mentioned that I could use my low profile jack just underneath where the spring is for each axle by each wheel. Plus I bought a pair of jackstands just to be on the safe side. It looks like here you are jacking up from the rear bar that the rear stabilizer is going into am I correct? Can it hold the weight OK because that would be a much easier location to raise the camper up in order to change a tire. I don’t think I have to raise the camper up to grease the axle. I thought I did that by taking the cap off by the Lugnuts and just pumping the grease in there based on Rustic Trail’s website
@TakeATripTogether
@TakeATripTogether Жыл бұрын
Good questions! I crawled underneath the camper to make sure I was placing the jack directly under the trailer frame which I think should be strong enough to handle the weight because it's holding up the whole trailer. It seemed to work well when I did it that way and felt secure. Also, there is a video link on Rustic Trail's website which takes you to a video made by Dexter (the axle manufacturer) where they show you jacking up the camper just enough to be able to spin the tire while pumping the grease in. You can find that video link on this page: www.rustictrail.com/rttc-starter-guide/
