Thank you for these tips, is the basting stitch length just a personal preference or are there reasons you would use different stitch lengths?

Both! You can have a common stitch length you use for normal piecing but consider if you have a thin pieced piano key border or such the like, you would want to make sure to secure all those seams along the edge. When you quilt over the seams, the basted side will be secure and shouldn't flip over.
